Dear DCN Supporter,

We are writing to update you on our progress at Davis Community Network (DCN), and to ask for your donation during the upcoming Big Day of Giving, May 4th. We again want to express our appreciation for helping us get this far!

Please support DCN and the DavisGIG project by donating here on the Big Day of Giving, Thursday, May 4th, 2017.  If May 4th is not convenient, you can visit the site any time and leave a secure contribution that will be taken on the Big Day.

As many of you know, in 2015 concerned Davisites formed an ad hoc group, DavisGIG (as in gigabit internet), with the express goal of making ultrafast, symmetric internet available and affordable in Davis. As DavisGIG had a goal aligned with the mission of DCN, we provided the group a nonprofit framework within which to work. Together we have successfully encouraged the City to investigate broadband options, through the formation of the Broadband Advisory Task Force.

At the recommendation of the task force, Davis has hired a consultant, Doug Dawson of CCG, who is now starting a feasibility study.  This process should take about three months, and will provide us an accurate assessment of both the cost and financing options available for a fiber network throughout the city.

There is still much to do. As well as continuing to participate in the task force and monitor the progress of the study, we want to start reaching out to the various segments of our community to inform them of how, together, we can own and improve this vital part of our infrastructure. We can craft a responsible plan where residents and businesses benefit, and no one gets left behind.

Finally, a critical next step in the process is to find out who in the city is seriously interested in participating by buying services. The level of participation (the “take rate”) is critical to the success of the project. We are examining commercial options for surveying and tracking real interest, but they will require thousands of dollars to purchase and implement. By doing this effectively we can inform future decision making, leading to faster implementation.

What we are asking for is your contribution to Davis Community Network on the Big Day of Giving, May 4th. Any amount will help us keep the work moving forward. The Board of DCN is offering a $1,000 matching fund to show our commitment to this goal.

With warmest regards,

Mike Adams
President, Davis Community Network Board
