About
The
Orchestras
The
Davis
Combined Junior High Orchestras consists of Emerson, Harper
and Holmes Junior High School students. The Intermediate Orchestra is
made up from students in the 7th Grade and the Advanced Orchestra
consists of 8th and 9th Graders. Members form each orchestra have daily
classes in their home school and participate in monthy rehearsals with
all three Junior High classes combined. Performances are with
all
three schools combinded. They perform under the
direction of Angelo
Moreno , who
instructs at Emerson and Holmes Junior Highs as well as the Davis
Senior High School and Greg
Brucker,
who instructs at Harper and Emerson Jr. Highs. The orchestra performs
throughout the year at several public concerts.
The
Directors
Angelo Moreno
Angelo Moreno
is a graduate of UC Davis where he received his B.A. and Master's
Degree in orchestral conducting under the direction of Dr. Kern
Holoman. In the fall of 2002 he also received his Teaching Credential
in music education from Sacramento State University. During his time at
UC Davis, Mr Moreno served as Principal Second Violin and was a loyal
orcehstra member for six years. He also participated for six years as
Concert Master and soloist of the UCD Baroque Ensemble under the
direction of Phebe Craig and Michael Sand. Mr. Moreno is a former
member of the Napa Valley Philharmonic in which he served as Concert
Master and soloist.
Mr.
Moreno is
the Director of the DJUSD Secondary Orchestral program where he teaches
at Emerson and Holmes Jr. Highs and Davis Senior High School. In
addition to his work in the public schools, Mr. Moreno is the Director
of the Sacramento Youth Symphony-Academic Symphony Orchestra, which he
began conducting in the Fall of 2002.
In
2005 Mr.
Moreno was awarded the "Teacher of the Year Award" presented by the
CSUS College of Education in recognition of outstanding service to
public education. In 2006 he was honored by State Assembly Woman Lois
Wolk and given a resolution from the California Legislature recognizing
his work in music education.
In
addition to
conducting, Mr. Moreno is a professional violinist with an active
private teaching studio. To contrast his classical endeavors, Mr.
Moreno enjoys improvisation on the electric violin in the Latin Jazz
group Akanthos, of which he is a founding member.
When
not
musically preoccupied Mr. Moreno values spending free time with his
wife Scherezada and two daughters Giavanna and Dchenin, whom he lives
with in Woodland, CA.
Greg Brucker
Greg Brucker earned
his BA in Music in June 2001 from UC Davis, having studied conducting
under U. C. Davis Symphony Conductor, D. Kern Holoman and Double Bass with Thomas Derthick. In
Spring of 2007, Mr. Brucker earned
an MA in Education and a California Teaching Credential through
the University of Phoenix..
Currently, Mr. Brucker is the Co-Director of the Davis Combined Junior
High Orchestra Program as the Harper
Junior High Orchestra Director
and Emerson Junior High Co-Director, and works with Director Angelo
Moreno as the Assistant
Director and Double Bass/Cello Coach of the Davis High School Orchestra Program.
Mr. Brucker was hired in 2007 to direct the newest Sacramento Youth
Symphony ensemble, The Vivace Strings. Mr. Brucker also teaches Double Bass privately to a range of dedicated students, most of which are musicians involved in the
Sacramento Youth Symphony Program.
He is
also a professional Double Bassist, playing for
the Folsom Lake, Auburn, Apollo, and UC Davis Symphonies. During his performance career, he has held the
Principal Double Bass position
of both the Camellia Symphony Orchestra and UC Davis Symphony Orchestra.
In the past,
Mr. Brucker had spent 5
years studying baroque music with the UC Davis Baroque Ensemble under
baroque violin master, Michael Sand, and 5 years studying and
performing avant-garde and improvisatory jazz with saxophone great John
Tchicai.
