Teach-In for Troy

Who is Troy Davis?

Why is a death row prisoner at risk of execution despite a compelling case of innocence?

•7 of 9 witnesses recanted their testimony against him

•No physical evidence or weapon links Davis to the crime

•One of the 2 remaining witnesses has been implicated

Guest speaker Ellen Eggers, California State Public Defender and former attorney for Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union, will present information on the legal aspects of the death penalty, reasons why the death penalty is flawed, and what we can do to oppose the death penalty.

Currently, working with the Innocence Project on behalf of a young man serving a life-sentence in Folsom Prison for a crime he likely did not commit, Ellen continues her many years of fighting for justice and human rights.

Date: September 22, 2009

Time: 6:30-7:30 pm

The Trouble with the Alphabet

The Davis Chapter will be hosting Caryn West, author of The Trouble with the Alphabet, on August 13th from 6 to 8 pm at the International House in Davis.

The Trouble with the Alphabet is unique and powerful. The book illuminates the world’s injustice in a compelling and unforgettable manner. It invites the reader to consider these issues through vibrant portraits illustrating the emotion and vulnerability of each child. It challenges indifference and apathy through poetic messages delivered as if through a child’s eyes; messages that cut through the rhetoric and pierce the heart and soul. It clarifies the issues through short essays that enlighten even the in-formed. Finally, it involved experts, organizations that provide answers, strategies and at the very least a platform to become a giver, a doer… an activist. - Caryn West
