One in three women worldwide experiences violence in their lifetime, making violence against women one of the gravest human rights violations of our time. The experience or threat of violence affects the lives of women everywhere, cutting across boundaries of wealth, race and culture. In the home and in the community, in times of war and peace, women are beaten, raped, mutilated, and killed with impunity.

Amnesty International’s Stop Violence Against Women Campaign is just one of the inspiring initiatives in a global effort by individuals and organizations working to make the world a safe place for women. URGENT ACTION - TROY DAVIS

Your letters and editorials worked! Troy Davis has been granted a stay of execution by the federal appeals court in Atlanta, GA. For more information visit the Amnesty International USA website at www.amnestyusa.org.

Despite the work of activist groups worldwide, Troy Davis is scheduled to be executed on October 27, 2008 at 7pm following the decision by the US Supreme Court not to hear Troy's final petition. Amnesty International has issued an Urgent Action to encourage the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles, as the sole authority to grant executive clemency, to reconsider their decision not to grant clemency despite the overwhelming evidence of innocence. More information about the Urgent Action follow the links to http://www.amnestyusa.org/actioncenter/actions/uaa28308.pdf. Additional information can be found on the AIUSA website at http://www.amnestyusa.org/.

About Amnesty International

Started in London, in 1961.

One individual, Peter Benenson, was so outraged when reading of a Portuguese dictator throwing political opponents in jail without trial or any legal process, that he organized a letter-writing campaign that freed many of these prisoners. Amnesty International grew from this effort, and now numbers over one million members worldwide.

Amnesty International, a not-for-profit human rights organiztion, works for the release of prisoners of conscience, opposes all forms of the death penalty as well as political killings and "disappearances," and condems torture, both physical and psychological.

Please attend one of our meetings, and find out how you can make a difference in the life of a person in a prison cell, who is there because he/she expressed an opinion that we are free to make every day.
