The school board is meeting this Thursday, March 20 at 7 pm. We are asking everyone interested in the school board's decision (who isn't?) to join us at 6 pm in front of the meeting. Not all of us will get a seat but all of us can be seen. Bring your signs! Bring your friends! And, of course, bring your kids.
Save our Schools Rally!
*** Today! ***
*** UPDATE ***
The rally went very well. I can't do crowd estimations worth a darn, but it looked like quite a crowd. Passing cars displayed support, several adults and kids spoke, and I think we let our views be known. Thank you to everyone who showed up to support our school!
Come and let them hear your voice!
When: Tuesday March 18th
Time: 4 pm
Place: Central Park in Davis.
We'll meet at Central Park (Russell Blvd.
between B and C st.), rally there and then walk across Russell Blvd. to
the DJUSD office.
Bring: posters, banners, friends and all your family (Students are
encouraged to speak at the Rally)
We can not allow the School District to take rushed decisions without
an in depth task force study . The proposal to close one Jr. High will
have deep negative repercussions across the whole Davis community and
the environment! Laying off 20% of our teachers, librarians,
psychologists, etc. guts our wonderful schools, reduces our quality of
life, lowers our property values and decreases the city's tax revenue.
Spread the word!!! It's not just about school families!
More Letters!
Ellen Dean has written an excellent letter to the school board to express her concerns, and lay out concrete suggestions for alternatives to closing Emerson. You can read the text of her letter by clicking "more" at the end of this post. Inspired to write your own?
Our co-presidents, with input from several PTA members, have written an excellent letter from the PTA to the school board regarding the potential closing of Emerson. It lays out the position of the Emerson PTA on the closing of Emerson. The letter clearly describes some features of Emerson, some potential effects the closure of Emerson would have on the entire community, corrects some misinformation about Emerson and its possible closure, and finally lays out several possible alternatives.
Lois Wolk has introduced a bill in the California Assembly. It calls for removing the shackles of spending categorical's from the local school board to allow them to set priorities and allocated reserved special funds to general purposes during this
budget crisis
Please ask Lois Wolk to attend the school board meeting March 20 at 7:30pm to discuss this bill. You can reach her office at (916) 319 - 2008 or by email at her website:
http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a08/ . Please let her know we support her bill, and would be very interested in her attendance at the school board meeting to discuss it.

There once was a school named Emerson
That elected the PTA
Whose job it was to raise money
To support our kids every day.
These lads and ladies decided
To forego the dinner and dance
And instead mailed out a nice letter
To the parents explaining their plans.
The first step is get out your checkbook
The second is write in our school
The third step is check off a dollar amount
And the fourth step is to feel "oh so cool.
So seal the envelope with a smile
Mail us your check with good cheer
Let's hope we get a huge pile
Help keep us out of arrears.
This money is used for good causes
For gardens, computers and things dear
Our children will forever be grateful
And will know how much we care.
Our tax ID is 139423006
Be sure on your taxes to show
Your donation could be a deduction
We thought you might like to know.
And if you think you can write a better poem
Please send us your very best shot
We promise to publish the top three
In our next PTA newsletter slot.
The "Focus on Safety" video contest for junior high students is an opportunity for Davis students grades 7 through 9 to spotlight their creativity and showcase their knowledge of traffic safety by producing 60-second (or shorter) Public Service Announcement videos on the importance of safe bicycling. The videos should focus on one of the following topics
Use Your Head, Use Your Helmet
The Rules of the Road
Working in groups of up to four, students can either work under the guidance of staff members from Davis Media Access at one of several free video production workshops to be held Jan. 29 through Feb. 28 at the Blanchard Room of the Davis Library, or can produce the videos on their own. Videos are due Feb. 29.
There will be great prizes for everyone, including digital photo cameras and $50 Target gift certificates for the winners as well the chance for them to see their PSAs on the big screen at a special awards ceremony to be held March 15 at the Davis Varsity Theatre.
The School-Business Partnership of the Davis Chamber of Commerce is
working with the Emerson, Harper and Holmes Junior High Schools to offer Career Days in February and March 2008. We are recruiting speakers now!
If you are a sports announcer or a sports medicine doctor, a tree house
builder or an artist who paints trees and you love your job and talking to
teens, we are interested in YOU (or your spouse or neighbor or cousin!)
These events will take place during the following Thursday mornings:
February 21 – Holmes
February 28 – Harper
March 6 – Emerson
You may choose to present at one or more schools. Our time frame is
approximately from 8:15 to 11:15 a.m.
We are seeking Career Day Speakers who can share their work lives with our
students. You would speak about your career and perhaps bring samples of your
work product, tools, equipment or other visual to show in a 20-30 presentation
to a classroom.
If you are interested in more information about being a Career Day Speaker,
please contact: Heather Mariano, Career Day Coordinator, at
DAVISCAREERDAYS@GMAIL.COM before January 28th. (Earlier is better!)
Blood Drive for Former Emerson PTA Member Terri Strack
January 22, 2008 3:30 to 7:30pm at the University Covenant Church
Terri Strack is undergoing treatment for acute myelogenous leukemia. Since she

Covenant Church Multi-Purpose Room, 315 Mace Blvd . Donors may volunteer to be
swabbed for bone-marrow typing at this event. Blood donations may also be made
at any Bloodsource location at the donor's convenience.
For questions about this blood drive for Terri
please contact Leslie Buhlman at randolph389-sports@yahoo.com.
More information on marrow donation is available here.
The short version: wash hands frequently, keep yourself and your environment as clean as possible, and cover wounds carefully. For more detailed information, you can download the advisory (pdf). For more information from the health department, go here (pdf) .
