SMUD Board of Directors
6201 S Street
Sacramento, CA 95817
Dear SMUD Board Members:
The Yolano Group Sierra Club strongly supports the annexation of the City’s of Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento into the Sacramento Municipal Utility District. The Yolano Group encompasses Yolo County and parts of Solano, Lake and Colusa Counties. We represent over 1900 Sierra Club members. The Yolano Group Management Committee, on September 9, 2004, received a presentation on the proposal to join SMUD. At that meeting the Management Committee voted unanimously to support studies on the feasibility and advantages of joining SMUD and possible annexation into the district. We subsequently published an article on the question of annexation in our newsletter, which is attached.
The Yolano Group’s decision was based primarily on the issues of green energy, service, democratic process, and cost. The Group strongly supports delivery of energy with minimal impact on the environment; we appreciate SMUD’s impressive record of implementation of green energy. SMUD also has the reputation of providing a high level of service to its customers and enjoys a high level of customer satisfaction. SMUD is able to deliver greener electricity at lower cost to the consumer than other providers, which was also an important consideration. Finally, it is important to the Group that SMUD’s directors are elected officials, directly accountable to the customers of the utility, not a private corporation beholden to private investors.
On Tuesday, January 18, the Davis City Council will hold its first meeting to begin discussion on the results of a $500,000 SMUD Annexation Study and the proposal for Davis to join the district. Members of the Yolano Group will attend and address the council with our support.
The Yolano Group Sierra Club sincerely requests that the SMUD Board of Directors, after careful analysis of the annexation study, votes to recommend annexation of Davis, Woodland and West Sacramento into the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.
