“Care and Keeping of a Teen”
The Holmes PTA will present “The Care and Keeping of a Teen —Nurturing the Body, Mind and Spirit,” Tuesday, Jan. 15, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Holmes MPR. Family practice physician, Dr. Sandra Johnson will talk about taking care of the adolescent body. UC Davis professors Irwin Feinberg, MD and Ian Campbell, PhD, will talk about their research on the adolescent brain and sleep. Finally, Maria Contreras, School Presenter for Yolo County Suicide Prevention and Crisis Center, will discuss the teen spirit —and how to stay connected to the teens around you. The presenters will speak from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., and remain for questions afterwards. If you have any questions, contact Cathy Farman at 750 0321 or at lfarman@sbcglobal.net.

A Safety Reminder
Please remember that the play structure is off limits to students and younger siblings between the 2:35 p.m. and 3:05 p.m. dismissal and after school, even with parent supervision. Children playing on the structure attract others to that area and we do not have staff supervision available. Thank you for your cooperation.

Valley Oak Talent Show is Coming!
Start getting your acts ready, auditions will be in early February after the Oral Language Fair! The show will be in mid-March, before spring break. We are expecting a huge turnout this year, so please keep all solo performances to one minute or under. Group performances may be up to two minutes. Stay tuned to the newsletter for more info!

5280 Running Club
Running club (grades 1-3) will begin again this week, Tuesday and Thursday, weather and field conditions permitting.

Oral Language Fair
A reminder to parents and students: if your child will be participating in the Oral Language Fair coming in February, please work to memorize your piece (poem, speech, etc.). Rehearsals will begin in January and students will work to perfect their performances.

Emergency Phone Number
Just a reminder, the number that cell phone users should call for local 911 service is 758-3600.

Children Invited to Storytelling Event
Matt Biers-Ariel will share original and traditional Jewish tales, such as “Liser the Miser” and “The Rabbi Who Was Hard of Hearing,” at a children’s storytelling event Jan. 13 from 2 to 3 p.m. at International House at 10 College Park.
Because January is the month of Tu B’shvat, the Jewish Arbor Day, Matt will also be telling some stories about trees, including his own story “Solomon and the Trees”.
Following the performance books will be available for purchase and signing. A donation of $2 per child or $5 per family is requested.
For more information, call 753-5007 or visit: www.internationalhousedavis.org/prog/children.

Parent Reminder
If you need to come on to the school campus during class hours (to volunteer in the classroom, bring your child’s lunch, etc.), please first sign in at the school office. This helps ensure the safety of our school campus. Thank you!
