Dragon Bookslayers
Dragon Bookslayers, Valley Oak’s annual reading incentive program, begins this week. Reading logs will be sent home Friday. The seven week program runs through April 18. Students will log their extracurricular reading (beginning Friday, not reading done prior to that date) and will be awarded prizes as they reach various levels. The prize table will be open from 1:30 until 2:20 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 2:35 until 3:20 p.m. on Fridays beginning March 12. We will need parent volunteers to award prizes to our readers.
If you can help, please contact Anne Finkelston at 753-1327 or afinkelston@sbcglobal.net.

Staff Appreciation Goodies
Conferences are fast approaching and once again we would like to show our teachers/staff just how much we really appreciate them. This time we're going to have salads, breads and desserts during the week of March 3 - March 7.
If you could help out by bringing any of these items we would really appreciate it. Please contact Denise Costa at domzden@sbcglobal.net or 530-757-6391.

Input Sought on Budget
State budget cuts and declining enrollment have lead to an estimated $4 million deficit in the Davis Joint Unified School District budget.
Superintendent James Hammond is seeking thoughts, ideas, recommendations and concerns from community members. Parents will soon be receiving input forms on this subject and a facilitated discussion with the public is currently being planned. Parents are also encouraged to attend PTA and Site Council meetings to hear more detailed reports on budgets for particular sites and programs and to attend DJUSD board meetings the first and third Thursdays of each month at 23 Russell Blvd. In addition, comments are welcome at superintendent@djusd.k12.ca.us.

Principal Mary Ponce will be at Korematsu Elementary next year
As announced at last week’s School Board meeting, our principal Mary Ponce will be transitioning to Korematsu Elementary School beginning next school year. The Korematsu Coyotes welcome her and we are happy she will be continuing as a principal in Davis!

Friday is Dr. Seuss Day!
Valley Oak will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday this Friday! Students are encouraged to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. There will be special activities and book readings in the classroom as well. Keep an eye out for the Cat in the Hat!

Family Night at the Book Fair
Everyone is invited to Spring Book Fair Family Night on Monday, March 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Valley Oak library. This is a great opportunity for parents (or guardians) and their children to choose books together and benefit school libraries at the same time. There will be a wide variety of quality books in every price range to interest readers of all ages. We will also have book readings, activities, prizes, cookies and hot chocolate. Best of all - Dweezel, our very own Valley Oak dragon, will also be there!
To make this a successful Family Night, we need adult volunteers. Please contact Vinita Domier at 756-7443 or vcdomier@yahoo.com to volunteer or for more information.

Valley Oak Charter School Update
The Valley Oak Charter School appeal is now before the Yolo County Board of Education. The County Board will hold a hearing on Thursday, March 6 to hear public comments on the proposed school (time TBA). Their final decision is due by early April. Everyone interested should attend the County Board's hearing. If you would like to send comments to the Board you may:
- leave telephone messages of up to 5 minutes at 668-3751.
