Changes to Unitrans S Line
Unitrans currently operates its S Line to transport students from south Davis to Holmes and Harper junior high schools. At the request of the Davis Joint Unified School District, the Unitrans Advisory Committee approved a route change, effective August 2008, which will allow students in the Olive Drive neighborhood to access this service.
Olive Drive is a neighborhood located between railroad tracks to the north and Interstate 80 to the south, compromising students’ safe route to school. The District is working with Unitrans and other community partners to provide free bus transportation to these students who need it.
The recommended route change requires an adjustment to the service schedule. In general, buses will serve current stops at times up to five minutes earlier each morning, and at the same times in the afternoon. Unitrans invites your comments on these changes. Please contact Pamela Mari, DJUSD Director of Student Services, at 757-5300 or PMari@djusd.k12.ca.us with your questions or comments.
A Dollar a Day for Davis Schools
The Davis Schools Foundation “Dollar-a-Day Campaign” seeks to compensate for cutbacks in state funding by raising a dollar a day for each child in the Davis public schools. Please do your part to make a difference. To learn more, visit www.davisschoolsfoundation.org.
Crocker Art Ark Lands at Valley Oak
The Crocker Art Ark, “Once Upon a Paintbrush” arrives at Valley Oak on Tuesday, April 1 and individual classes will begin visiting on Wednesday, April 2. Each class will visit for an hour. On Thursday, April 3, the Art Ark will be open for families from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The tours of the Art Ark are facilitated by an art educator. Students have the opportunity to experience all activities by rotating between three spaces. In these areas there are two main activities: activity stations and a gallery.
This is an exciting opportunity for Valley Oak students, as the selection of sites is done through a lottery. The Art Ark is coming to Valley Oak through a generous grant from the Frank H. and Eva B. Buck Foundation.
I-House Summer Camp
International House-Davis is offering an International Summer Camp for children!
During each one week session, children will "travel" to 5 different regions of the world -- Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific. Each day, "Guides" from different countries of these regions will introduce various aspects of their culture through music, geography, arts, dance, crafts, language, games, food, etc. The program is organized into two one-week sessions and is designed for children entering Grades 1-6 (Fall 2008).
Detailed information about the sessions and a registration form can be found on our website: www.internationalhousedavis.org/prog/children/summer.
Here Comes the Sun!
The sunshine has returned and with it the need for sunscreen. Make daily sunscreen a habit by applying it each morning before the kids leave for school.
Box Tops for Education
The final submission period for the Box Tops for Education program has passed. Valley Oak families should continue to collect the box tops, found on a variety of products you use everyday, to submit them to your child’s new school in the fall. For more information about the program, visit www.boxtops4education.com.
Wennberg Music Festival
You are cordially invited, as a special guest of the Orchestra Program directors Angelo Moreno, Greg Brucker, and students to attend this year's Wennberg Music Festival sponsored by the Davis Schools Orchestral Music Association (DSOMA). The event will be held Saturday, April 12 at the Mondavi Center. It begins with a wine reception from 1 to 2 p.m. Doors open at 1:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 2:30 p.m.

The Bodil Wennberg Music Festival provides an annual opportunity for orchestral musicians from the Davis public schools to celebrate their musical achievement with our community. Musicians from 6th through 12th grade will showcase the entire Davis School Orchestral Music Program. This year's Festival will feature the DHS Concerto Winner Pianist Angela Yeung, who will perform the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3 as well as our DHS Vocal winner Mezzo Soprano Elyn Green both accompanied by the DHS Symphony Orchestra and members of the UCD Symphony Orchestra.
