Yearbook News
The yearbook is complete and off to print! Thank you to those parents who were able to help supply photos from fieldtrips and class activities. The good news is that this year PTA will be giving each Valley Oak student the gift of a free yearbook to take with them as we move on to our new schools and new adventures. Yearbooks will be distributed to students during the last week of school.

Elementary Music Notes
Please join the Elementary-Music Listserv at: www2.dcn.org/mailman/listinfo/elementary-music.
This email list will keep you in touch with the music teachers, rehearsals, performances and the "Save Our Music!" campaign to preserve the elementary school music program.

About Bring Your Child to Work Day
Bring Your Child to Work Day is coming up. Although this is a great opportunity to share your professional world with your children, it falls in the time when the schools are doing our annual STAR tests. Testing has become an important mechanism for tracking student achievement, qualifying for certain programs, measuring program effectiveness, and can be tied to funding. Your child's participation in STAR testing is vital component of our school district's success.
STAR testing is scheduled to begin the week of April 22. Thursday, April 24 is Bring Your Child to Work Day. If you are planning to have your child participating in this event, please consider the following:
Testing at our site will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. on April 24. Pick up your child after the testing is complete.
Students that miss testing on April 24 will be required to make up the missed section. Research has demonstrated that students tend to perform better on tests when they are in the regular classroom setting.
If your child is in attendance for a portion of the day, DJUSD will still receive funding for attendance. If the student is absent, we will lose that funding.
Please consider these facts and accommodations in your planning. Thank you.

Your New School Needs Your Help

Delicious Pies for the Davis Schools
The Davis Lutheran Church (DLC) has its annual BBQ on Picnic Day, which this year falls on Saturday, April 19. The Davis Schools Foundation has been selected to be their charity with the money going to help our Davis schools during this budget crisis.
What they are asking for is assistance with shift workers to help serve food and help where needed as well as donations of HOMEMADE PIES! (They must be HOMEMADE – no, Ikeda's does not pass. They really stressed this point). Ideally it would be nice if every elementary school could contribute 10 pies.
The pies need to be delivered to the church April 19, before 10:30 a.m. DLC is located at the corner of 8th & B streets. Interested pie makers should contact Mary Nicholson at mnicholson@gotfresh.com. Valley Oak is being asked to help provide 6 volunteers during the 12:45 to 3 p.m. shift. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Mary Bodendorfer at bodendom@wyeth.com.

Let’s Show Some Appreciation!
The end of the year is quickly approaching and the Statewide Staff Appreciation Week is May 5-10. Wednesday, May 7 is our big luncheon that we put together for the teachers and staff. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful group here at Valley Oak, and as a result we put on this fun event as a way of showing our appreciation for how much they do for our students. In addition to that, our school is closing. So, it is with heartfelt reasons why we want to show our thanks and adoration for this final year.
There are about 40-50 people who will attend this event, so it is a huge undertaking and we need LOTS of help. This year we are having the luncheon catered through one of our fine establishments here in Davis. The areas we need help in are:
Gift Baskets!
Several years ago we started putting together these baskets and year after year the amount of volunteers increased. It has become a highlight for the staff as we raffle off each basket during the luncheon. Some suggestions or themes would be: a movie basket, relaxation, food, wine, gardening, etc. Be creative! You can also go in with someone and do a basket together. Our goal is to have a basket for each staff member!!
Set up! Clean up!
We need help with set up and clean up that day. We will begin getting the MPR ready at 9 a.m. on Wednesday morning. This involves getting the tables and the MPR decorated, getting food items ready, etc. The luncheon is over by 1 p.m. and if you can come early for pick-up that day to help us get cleaned up that would be great! The more people we have, the faster we will finish.
We are really looking forward to this special event. So, if you can help out in anyway please contact Denise Costa at domzden@sbcglobal.net or 757-6391. Looking forward to working with you!
