6th Grade Legacy Project
Take a moment to walk to the west wall of the school office (near where the principal parks) and admire this year’s 6th grade legacy project. Each 6th grader (& several staff members!) painted a tile and they were assembled into a beautiful dragon.
Many thanks to the 6th grade parents and students who helped with last weekend's installation. A huge THANK YOU to community artists Cindy Ruff and Sue Rutherford without whom this project would not have happened! They worked with the classes to select the design, organized the creation of the individual tiles and oversaw the installation work parties. This project will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come!

DSF Wraps Up Successful Campaign
The Davis Schools Foundation “Dollar-A-Day” campaign came to a close last week with a total of more than $1.77 million raised!

Don’t Forget Your Dragon Run Pledges!
Any pledges collected by student runners will be donated to the Davis Schools Foundation and all of the school district programs they help to support. Pledges can be turned in to the Davis Schools Foundation box in the school office. Checks should be made payable to DSF or Davis Schools Foundation.
Special thanks to the parent volunteers who braved the warm temperatures to help with the event and to the event coordinators Martha Gegan, Shawn Mayr and Dennis Spann. Thank you also to our community donors H2O to Go and Fleet Feet.

Save the Date!
Valley Oak Farewell Carnival
Friday, June 6, 5-7:30 p.m.
If you've never been to the Spring Carnival, then mark your calendars and don't miss this last one! There will be lots of games, bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, good food, music and the chance to hang out with friends. More details will be sent home with students soon!
Be sure to visit the “Hall of Memories” in the MPR during the carnival celebrating Valley Oak’s 54 year history. We are looking for memorabilia (pictures, t-shirts, etc.) to include in this display. If you have any items that we may borrow, please email valleyoakpta@yahoo.com.

EL Reclassification News
This spring, 15 of our English Learners were reclassified to Fluent English Proficient. The students met or exceeded the district’s benchmarks on multiple content area assessments, demonstrating proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing in English.
We celebrate this accomplishment and congratulate the following students: Shenqi H., Arzoo M., Ivy Z., Nicole U., Jiwon K., Jasmin P., Jose F., Brenda N., Ivan P., Aimee M., Humaira F., Carlo A., Manuel E., Marcos H., and Ivan T. Go Valley Oak Dragons!

Bags Needed for T-Shirt Distribution
The PTA will soon begin bagging and distributing orders for the Valley Oak Commemorative T-Shirts. Please help and do your part to “reuse” by donating your plastic or paper grocery bags. Bags can be dropped off at the front office until May 30.

Staff Appreciates Luncheon
The Staff Appreciation Luncheon was held last week and the staff was very thankful for the wonderful lunch, catered by Fuzio’s. Parents donated over 60 gift baskets. Denise Costa, Melinda Swift and Sharon Adams coordinated the event. There was also a surprise visit by former principal Connie Coughran and former staff members Karey Spivey, Natalie Trigilio, Nancy Douglass and Pat Martin.

PTA Receipts Due
Attention PTA volunteers: It is almost the end of the school year and time to wrap up our financial books. If you have any receipts for reimbursement from PTA sponsored event expenses, please fill out a reimbursement form and drop it in the PTA box in the school office. Also, if you have any PTA items such as tablecloths or other items used during our events, please return those to the school office. We need to include them in our storage shed inventory!

Flour Babies Return to Valley Oak!
Sixth graders should have already brought home letters to parents last week to explain the flour baby program, and genders of their flour babies will be awarded this week and specific guidelines discussed. Flour babies need to arrive in their 6th grade classrooms by Friday, May 23, in preparation for the activity which runs from Tuesday May 26, through Friday, May 30. That letter and other information can be found on Mr. Storm's website: http://www.djusd.k12.ca.us/valleyoak/bstorm/.
Parents are encouraged to help their students make the flour baby experience as authentic and meaningful as they wish while students care for them at home that week. We look forward to a great week with our flour offspring!

Time to Transfer Your Scrip
With Valley Oak closing in June, it is time to shut down or transfer membership in Scrip programs so that additional donations will not be made to a non-existent entity, but instead will go to the school your child is attending in the fall.
Many of you have Nugget scrip cards that generate donations for Valley Oak. Spend those cards down to zero and ask your Nugget checker for another card to indicate the new school to send the donation to. New Nugget cards are also available in the office in the Scrip box.
Similarly those of you who have SaveMart cards should spend those down to zero and discontinue using them. Check with your new school to see if they carry the program.
Safeway eScrip cards need the group affiliation changed to the new school. You can do this yourself by going to eScrip.com and clicking on ‘my eScrip’. Obtain your password by clicking on “forgot your password?” The password will be sent to your e-mail account and you can continue on in the eScrip website. If you have any questions you can call me, Sarah Rizzo at 756-7701 or contact the coordinator at your new school.
