Neighbors,
Below is a summary of the community meeting with the Davis police. Thank
you, Jon, for providing this summary! If any neighbors have any additional
comments to pass along to the police department, feel free to contact them
directly.
Our Arroyo association email list can be used to pass along notices to our
neighbors, such as suspicious characters or car break-ins. Send
neighborhood-appropriate messages to arroyo-assoc at mailman.dcn.org.
As Jon notes, the police may respond to our comments on speeding in our
neighborhood. In past years, the police have staked out speeders at the
intersection of Shasta and Rio Grande. Be careful!
Kyria

Subject: Police Dept. Neighborhood Meeting at Patwin, 01/14.
I attended the Police Dept. community meeting at Patwin last night. The
first part of the meeting was the new Police Chief presenting some
information about Davis crime statistics, the Department's staffing and
service level, the Department's upgrade needs (i.e. equipment and staff)
and lack of funding to meet the needs and, finally, the Department's
plans for community outreach (i.e. getting input from citizens about
policing needs) and developing a 3 year plan to respond to the input.
The second part of the meeting involved breaking up into small groups to
get input from residents about neighborhood safety issues and
suggestions for addressing them. Highlights:
The Chief noted:
Davis is below National, State and Regional staffing and funding level
averages.
The Department cannot implement technology, crime prevention program and
patrol staffing upgrades due to lack of funding.
Crime is up in Davis in categories of sexual and general assault (i.e.
mostly associated with college age folks involved in drinking
activities) and theft from and of vehicles.
At any given time, the City has about 4 patrol officers on duty on the
streets of Davis.
2/3 of Davis crimes are committed by Davis residents.
On the national level, identity theft has become a major problem that
everyone should be taking steps to address.
The Citizen groups concluded:
Top two neighborhood issues are speeding (i.e. and other traffic
violations) and vandalism (i.e. likely teenagers and college age).
Suggestions for addressing these issues were increased enforcement
activity and education of parents and in schools (i.e. regarding traffic
and vandalism offences committed by teenage and college age folks).
I didn't get the impression that anything would immediately come out of
the police meetings, but I would suggest watching your speed in the
area. It was pointed out that often folks who complain about speeding
get caught in some of the speed stakeouts that are generated by the
complaints.
