In-Reply-To: <3dih2a$d6ler8@mailer.democrats.org> Message-ID: ---------- From: "Democratic Party" Reply-To: dnc-002Yr01Q2v at mailer.democrats.org Date: Wed, 1 Dec 2004 07:10:08 -0500 To: "John Chendo" Subject: WA state recount: 42 votes from victory. Dear John, I need your immediate help. You've probably heard about the extremely close race for governor here in Washington. Only 42 votes separate my opponent and me, and thousands of ballots across the state haven't been counted. This is by far the closest race in the history of our state, and one of the closest the nation has ever seen. That means we must make sure that every single legitimate ballot has been counted -- and that means a statewide manual recount of every vote. Washington state law requires the party requesting the recount to pay for it, and it will cost at least $750,000. The Democratic Party is committed to this recount, but they need your immediate donation today to make it happen. Please give today. https://www.democrats.org/support/ Let me put this race in a little more perspective. Out of nearly 3 million votes cast, only 42 votes separate my Republican opponent and me. That's a difference of 0.0014 percent. The error for voting machines is somewhere between 1 and 2 percent, or 1,000 times as great as the vote difference. That means that this race is tied, and anything is possible with a manual recount. We must count every vote individually, and we can't do it without you. https://www.democrats.org/support/ Do not let this election slip through our fingers. We are only 42 votes away from victory in Washington, and we are confident that once all the votes are counted, we will win this race. Please help us reach this urgent goal by making a donation today! https://www.democrats.org/support/ Sincerely, Chris Gregoire Not a Subscriber? I remain convinced that the Left holds the answer for all Americans, not just a privileged few. I thought my next project might be media reform or campaign finance reform. I was looking for a "quick fix" to put us back on an even playing field with the Radical Right who have apparently hijacked our beautiful country. Then, in late July, I heard George Lakoff speak on Bill Moyers' Now (on PBS). It was interesting. I bought Lakoff's book, Don't Think of an Elephant and read it soon after. I like it. There is a lot of truth here. This is not a quick fix, but instead a systemic fix, a whole shift in thinking. I am interested in starting a book/activism club and first tackling this book - then we can figure out where to go next. The first meeting of this new group is January 10, 2005, 7pm, at my home 512 Jerome Street in Davis. I have copies of Don't Think of an Elephant for $6 per copy (email me to make arrangements to get a copy from me). If you will join us on January 10, please let me know so that I can plan accordingly. If not, I can still get you copies of the book or include you in future announcements about meetings if you want. Please read the book before the first meeting. I look forward to connecting with you about the book, the club or whatever you are thinking will bring good liberal values back to the USA. From jac07 at dcn.org Wed Dec 15 21:33:35 2004 From: jac07 at dcn.org (John Chendo) Date: Wed, 15 Dec 2004 21:33:35 -0800 Subject: [Davis Democrats] urgent: don't advertise with sinclair broadcasting company Message-ID: Sinclair Broadcasting is benefiting from government regulation of the airwaves, which gives Sinclair exclusive use of many frequencies in large areas of the U.S. markets. Sinclair, in return for this government benefit, is supposed to act in a way which promotes our system of freedom and democracy, instead of promoting partisan propaganda. In the last days of the presidential election, Sinclair Broadcasting forced its stations in many swing states, including Ohio and Florida, to air an anti-Kerry propaganda movie, "Stolen Honor." Now it is airing a show called the "Point" featuring the partisan diatribes of its vice-president, Mr. Hyman, with no balancing counterpoint. This is propagandistic use of the public airwaves, unworthy of constitutional government and free people. Please dissociate your company from these unfair and undemocratic abuses of our open political system. Before the election, Sinclair's stock dropped by more than 10% and then it promised to not show "Stolen Honor." Sinclair a few days later, and still before the election, broke this promise. Sinclair has proven itself to be a dishonest business partner. Investors and advertisers in Sinclair deserve to be made aware of this unethical and illegal behavior of Sinclair. The distaste of the American public for this abuse of power has been made clear once, and will continue to be made clear. Sincerely, John C. Chendo
