Our American values are at risk. George Bush is pursuing a truly breathtaking and unprecedented power grab that marginalizes the role of both our federal courts and the Congress. As a result, he has been able to enact the most extreme aspects of his right-wing agenda in virtual secret and without meaningful oversight. It stops now. Together, we can change the balance of power in Washington. We can elect a Democratic Senate in just 10 short months that will stand up to the Bush administration's unprecedented power grab and will stand up for our American values again. The single best way to end one-party rule in Washington as soon as possible is to support the DSCC in its mission to elect a Democratic Senate. The DSCC plays a unique role, watching every race every day and directly coordinating with the Democratic Senate candidates that need it most. Stopping the Bush administration's unprecedented abuse and misuse of power as soon as possible requires your support right now. Please, take immediate action today. Click here to make a secure online donation of $250, $500, or more. The DSCC will put your contribution to work right away in the campaign to stop the Bush agenda in its tracks. In just a few short years, we have seen heartless inaction in the face of the growing gap between rich and poor, a dangerous erosion of civil liberties, and a callous disregard for our natural environment. This administration has delivered nothing more than fear-mongering in the face of great challenges and a staggering incompetence when it comes to the basic functions of government. We've seen them fail to help those in the most need in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, fail to win the peace in Iraq, and fail in the implementation of the Medicare prescription drug benefit. In response, Senate Republicans have simply toed the line and let the administration take more and more unchecked power. The Republican congressional leadership simply rubber-stamped the Bush agenda, endorsed federal judges complicit in the administration's power grab, and recklessly disregarded their constitutionally mandated oversight authority. They have made a mockery of our Constitution and the fundamental principles of checks and balances and separation of powers. Democrats know what must be done. First and foremost, we have to stand up to the Bush administration's bullying and clean up the culture of corruption Republicans have fostered in Washington. Only after we restore America's trust in our leaders can we get down to the hard work of securing our country, building the economy, expanding health care coverage, taking care of the poor, and restoring responsibility to our government. By making a contribution right now, you are standing up in defense of our American values and joining the fight to restore the rule of law that makes our country great. Please act today to make an immediate investment in everything we hold dear. Click here to make a secure online donation of $250, $500, or more. The DSCC will put your contribution to work right away in the campaign to stop the Bush agenda in its tracks. The DSCC has an impressive and detailed campaign plan to win Senate races across the country and to elect a Democratic majority in November. It's a simple fact that to compete with the Republicans on an even footing, we must raise literally millions of dollars for our candidates. That campaign plan has set a lofty goal to raise $150,000 online in the month of February. It will not be easy, but I am confident we will succeed. Unlike our opponents, the DSCC cannot and will not simply ask corporate special interests or K Street Project cronies to bankroll the campaign. Instead, the DSCC has to rely on an informed citizenry that is ready to end years of arrogance and incompetence and is ready to join the campaign to defend our American values. I know there are literally millions of Americans ready to join that fight. Please, do your part right now. Click here to make a secure online donation of $250, $500, or more. The DSCC will put your contribution to work right away in the campaign to stop the Bush agenda in its tracks. I served eight years in the Senate and, as Vice President, presided over the body for another eight years. Senators used to pride themselves on being a part of "the greatest deliberative body in the world." Now, it seems that political theatre, corruption, and utter contempt for our system of government have replaced reason and debate as the currency of the realm. By taking immediate action today, you can end all that. Together, we can elect a Democratic Senate that can stand up to the Bush administration's bullying and defend our fundamental American values. Time is running out. Please act today. Sincerely, Al Gore P.S. I know you have friends and family who are also tired of the Bush administration's unprecedented power grab. DEBRA BOWEN'S PETITION DRIVE Probably the most pressing political issue for Americans in these troubled times is the sanctity of the ballot, which in the larger picture means the counting of it. According to Open Voting Consortium: ?The election system in the United States can no longer be trusted. Voting machines and the computers that add vote totals are being run with computer programs or software that can change vote totals. Where historic voter fraud required dozens of people colluding, now a small circle of corrupt election officials and voting machine technicians can skew results.? The voting machine business interests, virtually all of them supporters of the Bush regime, keep their software secret and peddle hardware with ?backdoor? entry possibilities. And they think nothing of wining and dining election officials around California. The Republicans would like nothing better than to undermine this state, as they have Florida and Ohio. Standing in their way has been Sen. Debra Bowen (D-28th Dist.), who has been carrying water for election protection activists and citizen voters by presenting and pushing through legislation to protect your vote and mine. Happily, since she is termed out this year, Sen. Bowen is now running for Secretary of State to take that most important office out of Republican hands bent on permitting expensive untested voting systems to be marketed and sold to county elections officials. Sen. Bowen needs our help. Running for office is expensive, but one cost that can be eliminated by citizen action is the collecting of signatures on petitions to qualify her to run for office. So here?s what you can do: * Collect signatures (including your own) on petition(s) (copied front/back, a single sheet of paper, links immediately below) containing space for 15 signers and the collecting party?s information: Petition front (pdf) Petition back (pdf) Sen. Bowen?s flyer(pdf) * Contact your friends to get them to do the same. * Mail the signed petition(s) (even if you?re the only signer, and make sure to complete the "affidavit of circulator" on the back) to Sen. Bowen?s campaign headquarters to arrive by February 17: Debra Bowen for Secretary of State, 578 Washington Blvd, #409, Marina del Rey, CA 90292. * If you cannot print out the petition forms but want to collect signatures, email GrassrootsWest.org or call 707 794-9259. * Donate to Sen. Dear john, Tell President Bush to come clean about Jack Abramoff -- email your Senators now! During last week's State of the Union address, President Bush spoke for 51 minutes on a wide range of subjects -- from his misguided war in Iraq to his failed energy policy. Yet in that entire 5,369 word speech, the President saw fit to dedicate only 60 words to a subject that has infected his entire Administration as well as the GOP Congressional leadership: the Republican culture of corruption permeating Washington, DC. Here's all that President Bush said about his Party's ethical lapses last week: > > A hopeful society expects elected officials to uphold the public trust. > Honorable people in both parties are working on reforms to strengthen the > ethical standards of Washington -- I support your efforts. Each of us has made > a pledge to be worthy of public responsibility -- and that is a pledge we must > never forget, never dismiss, and never betray. No apologies for Scooter Libby's obstruction of justice and perjury indictments related to the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame. No acknowledgment of Tom DeLay's ongoing criminal prosecution for money laundering. No mention of the procurement head of Bush's own budget office who was marched out in handcuffs. No discussion of GOP Congressman Duke Cunningham's resignation after pleading guilty to bribery charges. And certainly no reference to Jack Abramoff, the corrupt Republican lobbyist and major GOP donor who has already pled guilty to five criminal felony counts, with more likely on the way. Tell President Bush to come clean about Jack Abramoff -- urge your Senators to support my amendment today! In fact, now President Bush says that he doesn't even remember Jack Abramoff -- despite Abramoff raising more than $100,000 for Bush's 2004 re-election and serving as a member of the Bush Administration Transition Team in 2001 -- not to mention the more than 200 contacts that Abramoff's lobbying team had with Bush Administration officials in the first 10 months of 2001. That simply doesn't pass the smell test. The American people deserve to know the truth about the extent of Jack Abramoff's relationship with the Bush Administration, and how that may have corrupted policy decisions. That's why I have co-sponsored a "sense of the Senate" amendment, along with my colleagues John Kerry and Frank Lautenberg, urging the White House to provide the American people with a thorough account of the meetings the President, his staff, and senior executive branch officials had with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. It's time for President Bush to answer our questions about Jack Abramoff. Urge your Senators to support my amendment today! Despite the President's rhetoric in his State of the Union address, the White House's refusal to fully disclose information about their dealings with Jack Abramoff simply exacerbates the problem. After all, it's not George Bush's White House -- it's the people's White House -- and it is long past time they got an unobstructed look into their own government. If the President has nothing to hide, there shouldn't be a problem. Tell President Bush to come clean about Jack Abramoff now! Thanks so much for your continued support. However, I am proud to be a Dem donkey, and honored to be nominated for VP. I will be a happy VP warrior if elected. Remember: we together did get more than 77% of all voters in Davis to cast their vote for Kerry-Edwards, in November 2004. Since I am not computer-savvy, I will not accept the job of list-serve moderator: please, someone, let the club know of your willingness to serve in this role. This year, 2006, is a critical one for democrats to take back the country and its media from the corporate monopolies and the neocons. The June and November, 2006 elections are coming up soon. We have a grass-roots Sacramento Valley condidate, Phil Angelides, running for Governor. On Feb.14, at 9am, he will be filing his papers at 7000-65th Street in Sacramento, off Florin Road, to officially launch his campaign. Also,we have people challenging Republican incumbent Congressmen all around us: against Doolittle(Roseville-Auburn-Oroville-Truckee-Tahoe City), against Pombo(Lodi-Stockton-Livermore), and against Herger(Chico). We need to regain the Congress in 2006, for many reasons, including to ensure the renewal of the Voting Rights Act in 2007. Debra Bowen, a Dem state legislator, is taking on the Secretary of State, to make sure that our voting results are not owned by private monopolies. We need Dems from the Davis club to work actively and spread out on these issues and campaigns. So, please come to the Feb.14 meeting if you can, 6-8pm, Blanchard Room of Library in Davis. I am willing to serve on the membership committee, but I hope that others will come forward at the meeting to work on the membership committee. We need diverse participation, as well as checks and balances, so that no Dem voter is left behind by our club and so we create new ideas. If you have ideals and a sense of humor, I hope to keep working with you. America is a dream worth fighting for. And Cheney-Bush has shown us why. John Doolittle in November 26 for the 4th Congressional District. Please come meet Lisa and help her win in her fight against one of Congress' most ultra-conservative members. Suggested donation is $50 per person with checks written to Rea for Congress. Here are a few things to know about Lisa: Of the two candidates running in the Democratic primary in June, Lisa is the most viable and experienced candidate to challenge John Doolittle. She is an experienced and centrist, life-long Democrat. Lisa has worked in the trenches for over 25 years to advance Democratic causes. She served on the staffs of legislators Bill Lockyer, Lucy Killea and Gary K. Hart, and was the legislative director for the American Heart Association. Lisa is a strong supporter of working men and women, women's rights and the day-to-day needs of women and families. She believes the government should support the public in being good evnironmental stewards and taking care of our natural resources. Lisa is the founder of the Justice & Reconciliation Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing reconciliation and healing to crime victims and offenders. We hope you can join us on Wednesday evening to meet and support Lisa Rea! Address: 2424 Rodin Place. We need you to make an immediate investment in our campaign today so we can withstand the Republicans' Swift Boat-style distortions and character attacks that are sure to come. I know that we can win in November, but only if we can count on your support today and all the way through Election Day. Your help is crucial. Please make a contribution right now. I helped lead the fight against Samuel Alito's confirmation to the Supreme Court because he has consistently made it harder for the poorest and most vulnerable Americans to have their days in court. He routinely defers to excessive government power, even in light of the most extreme abuses of that power. The only thing he has ever said about a woman's right to privacy is that she doesn't have one. Trying to defeat Alito's nomination in a Republican-dominated Senate proved impossible, but the final vote total shows something important. 54 Republican senators - a Senate majority - voted for the nominee. 40 Democratic senators voted against him. The difference between a Republican-controlled Senate and a Democratic Senate could not be clearer. We have to change those numbers as soon as possible. The DSCC is working hard to change that balance of power in Washington. As of today, Democratic Senate candidates are running strong campaigns against Republican incumbents in key battleground states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Missouri. However, in each of those states, the Republican incumbent has a larger campaign war chest than our Democratic challenger. The DSCC's job is to level that playing field. I know we can win in those key states and take back the Senate in November, but only if the DSCC can count on your support every step of the way. Please make a contribution before it's too late. Electing a Democratic Senate is the only way to prevent George Bush from putting more judges like Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito on the Supreme Court. But if we're going to succeed, the DSCC urgently needs your help. Please make a contribution right now. Sincerely, John Kerry This message was sent to jac07 at dcn.org. The people of California deserve a full and transparent process for managing elections, a process that welcomes their participation and input -- not backroom deals and secret studies that only see the light of day after final decisions have already been made. Apparently, email messages from 2500 concerned citizens aren't enough to make Secretary McPherson change his mind -- so we need to make sure he hears from thousands more people, like you. That's why I'm asking you, urgently, to forward an email to the Secretary of State as well. Urge Secretary of State McPherson to reverse his decision on Diebold -- email him today! Secretary of State McPherson is just plain wrong. Last Thursday, I sent McPherson my own letter calling on him to reverse his decision. By re-certifying Diebold machines, the Secretary of State is violating state law and breaking the commitment he made to us in December that he would wait for federal testing to be completed before deciding whether to allow Diebold's equipment to be used. As I told Secretary McPherson in my own letter last Thursday, "While your decision may be good for Diebold and its shareholders, it is not in the best interests of California's voters or our democracy." Californians shouldn't be required to vote on machines that McPherson's own internal review team found to be riddled with bugs and susceptible to tampering. When the Secretary gets that kind of poor report, and then turns around to re-certify Diebold machines for use in California anyway, it only serves to undermine the already low level of confidence many people have in the integrity of our elections. That's why I'm asking you to speak out and tell Secretary McPherson how you feel about his terrible decision. Urge the Secretary of State to reverse his decision to re-certify the Diebold machines and schedule a public hearing to independently review the information in his hand-crafted "independent study!" Thanks so much for your help on this critical issue. The integrity of California's state elections system is at stake. Sincerely, Debra Bowen California State Senator P.S.
