Dear Mr. Chendo:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks and
Correta Scott Kin Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of
2006 (HR 9). I appreciate you taking the time to contact me on this
important matter.

I agree with you. The right to vote is one of the most important rights
guaranteed to every American. On May 2, 2006, Representative James
Sensenbrenner, Jr. (R-WI) introduced HR 9 to strengthen the Voting Rights
Act of 1965. This bipartisan legislation would extend the protections of
the original Voting Rights Act, as well as update the requirements for
assigning election examiners and observers to monitor voting stations and
ballot counting offices. Additional provisions would extend bilingual
election requirements and prohibit any tampering with voting procedures that
denies an individual their right to vote.

Every American has the right to vote, regardless of race, religion or
background. I believe that Congress must act to ensure that every American
has an equal opportunity to exercise their right. You should know that I
support this legislation in its current form.

Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Please continue to
contact me regarding matters of importance to you and to our district.
Sincerely,

MIKE THOMPSON
Member of Congress
