Dear John: I don't know about you, but when I vote, I want to know that my vote is counted. Some in California seem to think hacking of electronic voting machines is just fine. Grassroots champion Secretary of State Debra Bowen doesn't think it's fine. Do you? Secretary Bowen must decide by this Friday, August 3, whether to decertify suspect electronic voting machines. Sign here today to support Secretary of State Bowen in demanding the sanctity of each and every vote. http://www.couragecampaign.org/SecureElections We just cannot afford to wonder whether our votes are accurately counted in California elections. Not here. Not in the largest state in the union. But that's just what some county election officials say should happen. Secretary Bowen has come up with a comprehensive review1 that makes clear that some electronic voting machines are easily hacked ? but some county election officials question the need for any security review of those machines2. Some county election officials don't seem to care that voters lack faith in electronic voting systems. No wonder people say, "why bother to vote? They won't count it anyway." Now, we hear of Registrars that say there's not enough time to make sure that every vote counts. This is pretty simple: if we have time to vote, we damn well want those officials to make the time to count our votes. http://www.couragecampaign.org/SecureElections Remember Ohio in 2004? Or Florida in 2000? If not for a hanging chad or hackable machine, would Al Gore be president now? Or John Kerry? Californians face a February primary that can decide who will be the nominee for each party. And then a set of elections in June that will decide who figures out our budget in Sacramento and maybe even who can and can't get married. And then in November we?ll decide, along with other states, who will be President. Demand secure elections ! Support grassroots champion Debra Bowen's plan. Join our friends across the state who have led on this issue. Make every vote count. Thanks for all you do! The 50-State Strategy worked. Those organizers were key to our unprecedented victories up and down the ballot in 2006. Our organizers are still on the ground in all 50 states, preparing for 2008 in every way possible. And starting this month, they are kicking off an unprecedented voter protection effort, of a scale never attempted by any organization. While Democrats protect everyone's right to vote, Karl Rove and the Republican Party have a long history of threatening this right, working to make it harder for Americans to vote. We're going to stop them. Protecting the right of every eligible American to vote is our party's top priority because we know that it's good for America and good for our democracy when everyone votes. All Americans deserve to go to the polls confident that they won't be harassed or intimidated. That they won't wait hours for a ballot and that their vote will be counted fairly and accurately. Unfortunately, nearly forty-two years after the signing of the voting rights act, millions of American's are treated like criminals just for trying to vote. So we're going to meet with every election official in the country, visit every polling place, and make sure that every American will have their vote counted-and we will do it now, instead of waiting to hear about big problems on the news on Election Day 2008. We need your help. By giving $20, $50 or $100 you can help support the organizers working in your state and the vital work they are doing to make sure every vote counts. http://www.democrats.org/ProtectTheVote Under the Bush Administration's politicized Justice Department we have seen an outright attack on voting rights. In their latest scheme, the Republican Administration has manipulated the mission of the Department of Justice, firing U.S. Attorneys who were unwilling to pursue phony "voter fraud" cases, and politicized the Civil Rights Division. Over the past several years the GOP has tried everything from phone jamming schemes to vote purging to voter intimidation tactics to try and suppress the vote. That's why this effort is so necessary. Support our organizers on the ground and help us make sure we can fix voting problems now, instead of on Election Day 2008. http://www.democrats.org/ProtectTheVote I've promised to build the infrastructure and develop the strategy Democrats need to fight everywhere, and this is exactly the kind of effort it takes. Our work may not be in the headlines right now, but it's how we are going to make an impact next year and in every election after that. We all know what happened in Florida in 2000. We all know what happened in Ohio in 2004. Help make sure it doesn't happen again in 2008. http://www.democrats.org/ProtectTheVote Sincerely, Gov. Ted Kennedy: Draw the Line vs. Alberto's Warrantless Spying on Everyone In-Reply-To: Message-ID: ------ Forwarded Message From: "Sen. Ted Kennedy" Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2007 15:02:10 -0400 To: john chendo Subject: Draw the Line Dear john, I don't trust Alberto Gonzales with the power to spy on the American people ? and neither should you. In recent months, Gonzales has been under increasingly heavy fire for his shameful role in a number of shocking scandals, including the Bush Administration's illegal eavesdropping program and his refusal to come clean about what he has done. He's lost the confidence of the American people, and many -- myself included -- have called for his resignation. But rather than holding Gonzalez and other members of the Administration accountable for breaking the law, the White House pushed for legislation that legalizes their actions. Two weeks ago, the Bush Administration and their rubber-stamp Republican allies in Congress forced revisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to expand the government's right to spy on American citizens without outside oversight. Once again, George Bush, Dick Cheney and Alberto Gonzalez are taking the Bill of Rights into their own hands. Tell the White House to stop scaring the American people into surrendering their basic rights: http://www.democraticmajority.com/wiretaps There's no doubt FISA had serious gaps that Congress needed to close. But as the New York Times stated, the new FISA law goes "far beyond the small fixes that administration officials had said were needed to gather information about foreign terrorists." Under the new law, any conversation between an American citizen and a foreigner can be monitored without a warrant. Any conversation at all! But even worse, there's no accountability for this massive new surveillance program. The Bush Administration will set the rules about who gets spied on, and will also have the responsibility for determining whether they're complying with their own rules. It's like taking a test, and then getting to grade it yourself. Each of us wants to do everything in our power to protect America from the threat of terrorism. But the Bush Administration refuses to draw any line between fighting terrorism and violating basic civil liberties. Together, we can draw the line. Sign the petition, letting Washington know that you don't want Alberto Gonzales spying on honest, hard-working Americans like you: http://www.democraticmajority.com/wiretaps This is the same Administration mentality that gave us Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib. Again and again, Alberto Gonzalez, Dick Cheney, and George Bush have thumbed their noses at the Constitution and the rule of law, and then demanded that Congress condone their abuses and trust their judgment. Not this time. We owe the nation a better approach, and you can help us do it. Sincerely, Senator Edward M.
