It was also reported that the club elected new officers for the fall of next year and Max was re-elected as president. High School Young Dems A report on the Davis High School Dems was given by Bob Bockwinkel. There were three students that went to the convention. They enjoyed themselves immensely. Julia Bockwinkel, a former Davis High Dem, helped with making them feel at home at the convention. Julia was attending as a UC Berkeley Young Dem. President's Report There was no report by the president this month. YCDCC The meeting was once again cancelled, so there was no report. Other Clubs There were no reports about the West Sac and Winters clubs. NORTHERN CALIFORNIA CLUB DATABASE PROJECT Judy Reynolds was not in attendance, so no report was given on this project. TREASURERS REPORT Betty Weir was present and made the following report. At the beginning of April the club had $2902.79 in the bank. For the month of April, the following was the state of our treasury: April 1 Balance: $4096.98 INCOME Dues $492.00 Donations 0.00 Potluck income 65.00 TOTAL INCOME $557.00 EXPENSES TOTAL EXPENSE 388.72 May 1 Balance: $4262.65 We have 162 paid members at this time. DETAILS The expenses this past month were for post office mailing costs, newsletter printing costs, decorations and plasticware for the champagne brunch, and flowers for Mary Lou Hernandez. BUDGET COMMITTEE This report was given by Chair Bill Ritter. The budget committee did not meet. The conclusions presented at the last meeting were discussed. The bottomline is that the club gets enough dues from its 300 members to fund its operations each year. The club only has to do some extra work at raising money during Presidential and Gubernatorial elections every other year. SCHEDULING COMMITTEE Claire Black-Slotton was not present at this meeting. PUBLIC OUTREACH COMMITTEE There is no board member assigned to this committee. MEMBERSHIP COMMITEE REPORT Carl Schimd is chair of this committee and presented the following: The committee tried to boost membership by sending out 30 extra copies of the newsletter. It is unknown at this time how may of these 20 people paid dues to the club. G Richard Yamagata stated that he knows of one case where the recipient is going to join the club. A phone bank list is being made to distribute to the board for the board members to call people that have not yet paid their dues. With the resignation of John Chendo, there is only one copy of the membership excel file. That file is going to be sent to Mike Syvanen to maintain. The last use of the list was by Lyle Smith to get people to come to the Yolo County Blue Action club events during the month of May. When told that there were only two sheets of numbers to call for expired memberships, Pam and Cecilia volunteered to telephone these people. Barbara Slemmons would like a letter included as a drop-in to the newsletter on how important it is for members to send in their dues. This would be in addition to anything that the newsletter editor would write. Betty stated that there were board members that have not paid their dues as of yet, though none of these people were at this meeting. NEWSLETTER The newsletter editor is Cecilia Escamelia-Greenwald and is being aided by Bill Ritter. She and Bill will put out the next newsletter. Bill Ritter asked that the club reimburse him for a postcard he sent out to the members announcing the Champaigne Brunch. The cost was about $83.20 and $76.80 for postage and printing costs or a total of $165. President Arun Sen approved of the spending of the funds. MOTION/VOTE Mike Syvanen made the motion that the Davis Democratic Club reimburse Bill Ritter for the printing and mailing of postcards to the DDC membership for a total of $165. Bob Bockwinkel seconded the motion and it passed without objection. Barbara Slemmons stated at this point that the Davis Enterprise gave the club excellent coverage for this event with John Garamendi Sr. coming to speak at this event. It was noted that Cecilia will talk to Lyle about whether or not he will take over as editor of the newsletter after February 2008. He could run for that position in the election as one of the 8 elected board positions. It was discussed at this time the need for a drop-in long range calendar. President Arun Sen has filled in a long range calendar as best as he could until February '08. There will be a Valentine's Day party and a General Meeting with an election for board officers. The by-laws need to be changed to state that to vote, people need to pay their dues before the election to be given a ballot. GENERAL MEETINGS JUNE EVENT - Champaigne Brunch The Honorary Event Chair is Betty Weir. The acting event chair is Mike Syvanen. The event will be held on Sunday, June 10th. The Keynote Speaker will be John Garamendi Sr. Chairs will be coordinated with Stephen Souza by President Arun Sen. A list was circulated for board members to sign up for food items to bring to the event. Able body people are needed to be on site at 9AM. Mike Syvanen and the college Dems, Max and Russell will be there at 9AM. Mike said that this would be enough people. The Kitchen Crew will be Luba, Pam and Barbara. Mike will back up the kitchen crew in ferrying food from the kitchen to the tables. Betty will be at the entrance table collecting donations. The event will cost $15 to enter. A partial list for the event: Barbara Slemmons -- quiches Cecilia Escamelia-Greenwald -- quiches Pam Nieberg -- fruit salad Mike Syvanen -- loks dish (salmon), cream cheese, and whipped cream for strawberries G Richard Yamagata -- flat of strawberries and 60lbs of ice Bob Bockwinkel -- champagne and orange juice Bill Ritter -- coffee from Starbucks Betty Wier -- open face sandwiches and vegetable tray Bob made the motion that Barbara go to Costco and purchase any other food items that we need. The motion was not seconded. Instead, Mike will coordinate with the other board members that were not at the meeting to fill in what is missing for the event. Arun stated that he would call Stephen Souza and coordinate to have the DDC chairs delivered to the event. FOURTH OF JULY BOOTH Arun stated that the booth would be an 11 by 24 foot space (double booth) next to Yolo County for Obama. [All of this has since changed. Our booth is a half booth being shared by the Young Democrats and we are on the opposite end, away from Obama.] We will be selling soft-drinks and baked goods. The soft drinks are mandated by the city, that they cannot be less than $1/can or bottle so as to not out compete with other booths selling beverages. Baked goods, it will be requested that members bake goods and bring them to the booth to be sold. We will also be selling buttons and bumper stickers. Bill Ritter wants some provocative signage at the booth. Mike Syvanen volunteered to help with lettering such a sign to be displayed at the booth. It was stated by Bob Bockwinkel that Mr Dionysis of Teach Peace has signs already and that we should approach him to borrow the signs. MOTION/VOTE Bob Bockwinkel made the motion that Bill Ritter work with Betty Weir to purchase $400 in campaign buttons and bumper stickers. The campaign items that are left over will be used at the Yolo County booth. Carl Schmid seconded the motion. The motion carried without objection. There was no committee appointed at this meeting, as stated would be done at the last two meetings. Rich Peterson will coordinate all of the groups that will be at the booth for this event. [Please note the following: It was decided at the March meeting that a committee will further deal with concerns about signage for the booth and what information will be distributed at the booth, including party literature and candidate literature. At the March meeting, Eileen Lindsay asked if a committee is not formed at the next meeting (April), if it would not be better for us to put our energy in tabling at the Davis Farmer's Market. She went further to even suggest that we might pick up volunteers at the Davis Farmer's Market for public events (like tabling and 4th of July booth). At this point in time we still do not have a chair for this event.] ICE CREAM SOCIAL EMILY AND JERRY'S ICE CREAM SOCIAL AND POLITICAL SOAPBOX Emily is Teresa and Jerry Kaneko's cat, named for the Democratic Party campaign fundraising entity, Emily's List. This event will be held on Thursday, August 23rd and will start at 6:30PM. Jerry Kaneko will emcee the event. Arun Sen will act as timekeeper, giving everyone two minutes to speak. Any member of the club is invited to step up and speak at this event. The sign-up lists for bringing ice cream will be circulated at the August Board Meeting. G Richard Yamagata will bring 6 citronella candle buckets and two bottles of insect repellant. Arun said that he would further speak to Jerry Kaneko about discouraging mosquitos from the event. FUNDRAISING and PUBLIC OUTREACH COMMITTEES There has been no activity in the area of these two commitees as the members were absent or have resigned from the board. BY-LAWS COMMITTEE The chair appointed by the President is Jim Provenza, who was not at the meeting. No meeting has yet been called of this committee. Arun suggested that other members of the committee (Carl Schmid, G Richard Yamagata, Bob Bockwinkel, and Arun Sen) and members of the board send their suggestions for changes to Jim Provenza. NEW AND UNFINISHED BUSINESS CANTINA DEL CABO CLOSING Bob Bockwinkel spoke to the issue of supporting a public event honoring Tom Lovering and the Cantina Del Cabo in recognition of all of their past service to the Davis Democratic Club. We have had club events at the Cantina, that were subsidized and charged lower fees to promote a public cause or event. One of these was a General Meeting of the Davis Democratic Club chaired by Lyle Smith in May 2004. More recent events were subsidized catering of the Yolo County Bean Feed in October of 2006. The club has had various other activities at the cantina in the past, like election day parties, State of the Union Boofest parties, Indictment parties and other spontaneous gatherings of Democrats on important days in the past. The facility will be dearly missed, because there is no other downtown establishment that will invite Democrats and embrace our causes. Other establishments do not want to become politically branded and offend other potential customers (like that restaurant that has since said it has changed management and is no longer sponsoring Republican events in Davis). Tom has hosted other causes and functions for the community, like the annual Martin Luther King Day Memorial Dinner and Katrina Relief fundraiser. MOTION/VOTE Bob Bockwinkel made the motion that the club support this event with a donation of $100 to the party fund. Bob stated that he had already, personally raised $600 for this event. He expected the event to cost about $1500. G Richard Yamagata seconded the motion. The motion passed with two abstaining votes. There was a discussion that this item violated our by-laws. There was no quorum at this meeting, so we could not vote to suspend the by-laws. The event was from 5Pm to 9Pm on Wednesday, June 20th. It was suggested that this event be treated like a general meeting for the Davis Democratic Club and the $100 be a donation from the club for its members. NEW BUSINESS: COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE LIST BEING USED FOR NON-POLITICAL PURPOSES. There have been complaints to the list about it being used for non-political or partisan statements being made about member electeds. Arun Sen said that he would speak to John Cheno about this and about the membership access list. President Arun Sen asked G Richard Yamagata to post a statement about list posting policy. He also asked Richard to send out e-mail requests to the list to see who can volunteer in the available time slots from the general membership with 2 hour shifts. The e-mail will also ask for baked goods donations. ANNOUNCEMEMTS Our member guest, John Rundin, introduced himself and addressed the board about why he attended the meeting and what he would like to see the club do. The next club meeting will be July 3rd at 7PM in the Blanchard Room of the Yolo County Library. The August board meeting will be at the Blanchard Room on August 7th at 7PM. ITEMS FOR NEXT MEETING We will be discussing the election of a new Vice President. Carl Schmid said that he would formally submit a name for nomination. Mike Syvanen said that he had sent an e-mail of interest in the position. The position will run until February 2008. Arun Sen adjourned the meeting at 8:27PM. You did it! We did it! Thank you so much for helping us reach our June 30th goal. Thousands of people from all across the country became Patriots of Peace, and we sent a message loud and clear that our message is too important, our work is too critical, and our campaign will continue to spread Dennis?s message about peace and prosperity! We are simply humbled and amazed by the response we have received for this goal. A supporter from Minneapolis wrote in and said, "A friend of mine, Tony Hebert, was killed in Iraq a couple days ago. It hurts me deeply to know my buddies, the guys I grew up with, are dying for a war that has no reason and, terribly, no end. I know you have the passion and dedication to fight for peace, and for that, you are a true patriot, a true hero." We thank this supporter for his comments, and our hearts go out to him and to the family of his brave friend who lost his life in Iraq. This is why we continue to fight this fight. As true patriots, we will continue to tell the truth about Iraq and fight for an end to this occupation. We will continue to lead the fight in a not-for-profit health care system to ensure we all have adequate health care. And we will continue to fight for equal opportunity and equal access for our brothers and sisters without a voice. That?s what this campaign is about. We thank you in helping in this very important mission and we urge you to continue supporting this campaign and spreading the word about Dennis's message of peace. Again, thank you so much for your continuing support! Together, we will win this race; together, we will build a better America! The agency needs to hear from you about Net Neutrality -- the principle that stops AT, Verizon and Comcast from controlling where you can go online. Thousands of people have already told their stories (see below) urging the FCC to protect Net Neutrality. Now it's your turn: Tell the FCC to Save the Internet You need to act now before the FCC closes its comment period. If we flood them with comments in support of Net Neutrality, the FCC will be pressed to stand up to the giant phone and cable companies that seek to undermine free choice on the Web. We're a group of Americans dedicated to improving our country, both through the choices we make at the ballot box and those we make at home. That's why we're dedicating this year's Democratic Reunion to a challenge we can all tackle together: the fight for a cleaner environment. This year's Reunion won't be your normal house parties -- we're going to be planting trees, cleaning up local parks and beaches, and kicking off local recycling programs. Will you host an event on July 28? http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReunion We're also planting the seeds of something a lot bigger: the field organization we need to take back the White House in 2008. President Bush, Vice President Cheney and the Republican Congress stood in the way of progress on energy independence and climate change. They've spent years denying the existence of global warming while turning over critical decisions to energy executives. Jeremy Symons, who represented the Environmental Protection Agency on Vice President Cheney's energy task force, described the Bush administration's "carefully orchestrated policy of delay": > "It's a charade... They have a single-minded determination to do nothing -- > while making it look like they are doing something." Democrats have already taken the lead on conservationism and energy efficiency. I've personally signed and live by former Vice President Gore's Live Earth pledge, and Speaker Pelosi is leading with a legislative agenda in the House focusing on energy independence. In June the Senate passed an energy bill that will save Americans tens of billions of dollars each year, while: * Reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources right away; * Cutting our oil consumption by 7 million barrels a day within 20 years; and * Taking critical steps in the fight against global warming. The Democratic Party believes we have a moral obligation to lead our country in a new direction, for a cleaner, healthier environment. Now it's up to each of us to do our part. Will you help the Democratic Party take on one of the greatest challenges of our time? http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReunion Last summer, tens of thousands of people participated in the first Democratic Reunion to take back Congress in 2006. That's the idea behind the 50-State Strategy -- that no matter where you live, you can make a difference. But the Democratic Party and the 50-State Strategy can be more than a driving force at the voting booth. By working together in towns across the country, we can fight for Democratic principles like energy independence -- while building our organization for future elections. This summer, let's work on making our towns greener places to live -- it's a good start to cleaning up the Republican mess in Washington. Roll up your sleeves on Saturday, July 28 for a stronger Democratic Party and a cleaner America: http://www.democrats.org/DemocraticReunion Thanks for your leadership, Gov. More than 2 billion of us joined together on 7.7.07, and with one voice, demanded an end to the climate crisis. We now have the responsibility to carry this movement forward and force our leaders to take action. The first step is to make sure every single person possible joins us. Then email five of your friends and ask them to sign the pledge by visiting: http://algore.com/pledge All of the actions we take from here on out to solve the climate crisis will be based on a simple premise: our home, Earth, is in danger. We don't risk destroying the planet, but instead risk making it inhospitable for human beings. We have put so much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that we have changed the heat balance between Earth and the Sun. If we don't stop soon, the average temperature will increase to levels that will end the favorable climate balance on which our civilization depends. Throughout most of our short history, the United States and the American people have provided moral leadership for the world. Establishing the Bill of Rights, framing democracy in the Constitution, defeating Fascism in World War II, toppling Communism, and landing on the moon - all were the result of American leadership. Once again, Americans must come together and direct our government to take on a global challenge. Our leadership is a precondition for success. We need to demonstrate that we have reached the tipping point where political will demands our representatives take action to solve the climate crisis. That's why it's so vital that millions of Americans sign the Live Earth Pledge. Sign the Live Earth Pledge today by visiting: http://algore.com/pledge The climate crisis offers us the chance to experience what few generations in history have had the privilege of experiencing: a mission; a compelling moral purpose; a shared cause; and the thrill of being forced by circumstances to put aside the pettiness and conflict of politics and to embrace a genuine moral and spiritual challenge. Dear John, Invite 5 friends to join our community! Two weeks ago, I asked our BarbaraBoxer.com community to help us reach an ambitious fundraising goal of $2 million cash-on-hand before the June 30th filing deadline. And boy did our community deliver. We'll be announcing the exact total in the next few days, but I can tell you today that thanks to our community's help, we went well beyond that $2 million mark -- and will put our opponents on notice that we're already getting prepared for 2010! Not only that, we added over 10,000 new donors to our 2010 campaign. It's only with the support of our BarbaraBoxer.com community that I can continue to fight, day in and day out, for a better America in the United States Senate. But as we celebrate this good news, you and I know that there is still much more work to do. You don't have to look much further than last week, when right before the July 4th holiday, President Bush commuted Scooter Libby's jail sentence. Scooter Libby was part of a coordinated White House operation to punish a leading war critic, Joe Wilson, by "outing" his wife's identity as a covert CIA agent. This was just one more example of this Administration's efforts to squelch dissent on the Iraq war at any cost. The President promised to "take the appropriate action" if he discovered that anyone in his Administration outed Valerie Plame -- and now I guess we see what action he had in mind. But we are not standing by silently as President Bush tries to stifle dissent and pursue a failed strategy in Iraq. Fortunately, more and more members of Congress are now recognizing what we've known for many months: our men and women in uniform are still caught in the middle of a bloody civil war in Iraq with no end in sight. Key Republicans like Senator Dick Lugar from Indiana, the Ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, and Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico are already starting to call for a change to the Administration's policy in Iraq. It's our job to keep up the pressure and put an end to this war. Our troops can't wait any longer. That's why my colleagues in the Senate and I are holding a debate about the Defense Authorization Bill this week, which will determine the military budget for the next year. The goal is to push for withdrawal plans now -- because, like you, I know that we need to change direction and end this war. The recent "surge" of tens of thousands of troops has done nothing but put more and more of our brave service men and women in harm's way. Together, by continuing to speak out and fight for what's right, we will put America back on track. But we need even more people to join us in this fight. So please invite 5 friends to join our BarbaraBoxer.com community and help us change the direction of our country. Thank you so much for your continued support. I couldn't keep fighting without you. But I'm writing just to let you know that I can feel the progress we're making. Here's what I take away from the week that's ending. First, you've got a whole lot of Senators who voiced opposition to the current disastrous course in Iraq, but couldn't bring themselves to admit that we needed an open debate on what the new course should be. They filibustered, throwing up a roadblock to any new course. (OK, that's deeply frustrating - but then again two years ago could you imagine the day when the President would have such intense criticism from his own right flank on Iraq? The dam is breaking.) But most importantly, we're not going to let the roadblock stand. We, and I mean all of us who have been pressing and pressing on the war, have now made it clear in both parties that this Iraq policy is beyond broken. Last year, only 13 Senators voted for the Kerry-Feingold bill to set a deadline to redeploy; now it's the unified Democratic position. In May, Republicans were dismissing even tough questions about the escalation. Now, they're falling all over themselves to distance themselves from the President. So we're making progress. But progress doesn't mean anything to the troops in the field. We need to get results. It's just plain wrong for some people to admit that the policy is broken, but then filibuster attempts to fix it. If the policy is broken, we owe it to all Americans to hold open debate and arrive at a solution.? We'll keep slugging until we'll get there. Thanks, John Kerry P.S. - You and I know damn well what happens at moments like this: the Administration attacks their opponents ruthlessly. They smear, they lie. Yesterday they went after Sen. Clinton. I stepped up to defend her. Tomorrow who knows which Democrat they'll attack. Here's what I'm asking you: I don't care if you have a horse in 2008, or who you're supporting. Anytime you see a Democrat get attacked, please step up and defend them.? John Kerry For U.S. Senate 129 Portland Street, Suite 500, Boston, MA 02114-2014 info at johnkerry.com www.johnkerry.com ? I've also read and watched what 'pundits' and the 'D.C consultant class' have had to say about my proposals. And, while it's really no surprise, the two couldn't be farther away from one another. I've heard some pundits characterize censure as 'piling on' an unpopular president that could, in the end, hurt Democrats in 2008. Some have said it's a 'big tactical mistake. I could go on, but I'm sure you get the point. Meanwhile, outside of Washington, D.C., it's clear from the thousands of responses I've received, from people on both sides of the aisle, that the American people as a whole are sick and tired of the notion of an imperial presidency. Americans are demanding accountability. From illegal domestic wiretapping, to the President's dubious signing statements, to the current U.S. Attorney scandal; from manipulating intelligence data to suit their ideology, to their dishonesty about weapons of mass destruction, to their disgraceful efforts to convince Americans that Iraq was directly involved with the attacks of 9/11, the Bush White House has failed this country in a catastrophic manner. We have a duty and responsibility to make sure that this President, and future presidents, understand clearly that Americans value the rule of law and will not stand by while an administration ignores our laws and our Constitution. I'm continuing to work on both censure resolutions and will formally introduce them in the coming days, but I still need your feedback. Please click here to send me your thoughts. It's time to get our country moving in a new direction. One of them has come to a boil! Last night, as reported in this article , the House leadership announced that legislation introduced by Congresswoman and PDA advisory board member Barbara Lee to prevent permanent military bases in Iraq and bar U.S. control over Iraqi oil resources will come up for a vote on the House floor tomorrow, Wednesday July, 25. Please act now to ensure its passage. Lee's bill, H.R. 2929 , declares that it is the policy of the United States not to establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing for the permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq and not to exercise United States control of the oil resources of Iraq and prohibits the use of funds for these purposes. U.S. presence is fanning the fires of sectarian and terrorist violence; a permanent presence will only add fuel to the fire. People in college have had and continue to have friends in Iraq, or know someone who joined the Reserves to pay for college and ended up in Baghdad; I have friends who have served this way also. Knowing this, I've always been especially proud of what my dad did last year, when he stepped out ahead of his party and started demanding we set a deadline to get the troops out of Iraq. Now his position has become the unified Democratic position, and I have noticed that a lot of reporters in the last week or so are realizing that fact: John Kerry's position is now the Democratic position. And I just wanted to share a few of those articles with you. Over the weekend, the AP wrote an article about how nervous Republicans are getting over Iraq, and included this part about my dad, John Kerry, and his efforts last year to set a deadline to withdraw troops from Iraq: > Democratic strategists fretted about the impact on senators seeking > re-election and challengers to Republicans in swing states. > > The plan drew the support of 13 Democrats. > > "Now it's the unified Democratic position," Kerry correctly e-mailed his > supporters last week. "In May, Republicans were dismissing even tough > questions about the escalation. Now, they're falling all over themselves to > distance themselves from the president" And the Boston Globe remarked : "Another of his bold moves -- leading the filibuster against confirming Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito -- now looks very smart to liberals, after Alito provided crucial votes to eviscerate liberal positions on school desegregation, late-term abortion, and campaign finance restrictions." And the Chicago Tribune does a good job of putting this political fight in the context of my dad's life: > Few living American politicians have had their lives so defined by war as > Kerry. His wartime service and wartime protest stoked his political career in > Massachusetts. Poersch" Reply-To: Date: Fri, 27 Jul 2007 11:12:25 -0400 (EDT) To: Subject: A thumpin' Dear john , When you get right down to it, fundraising is a barometer for how the American people feel about a candidate or a party. That's why I am so excited to tell you that the DSCC is breaking our fundraising records left and right while the National Republican Senatorial Committee lags far behind. Americans want more Democrats in the Senate and even Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell knows it. Recently he said, "holding our own is about all we could hope for" in the 2008 Senate races. The DSCC is analyzing each state to see where our best chances are to increase the Democrats' narrow 51-49 Senate majority in 2008. And let me tell you, we're seeing more opportunities everyday. John Sununu Looking for Nearest Rock to Hide Under In 2006, Republican House members were routed in the Northeast. Now, it looks like New Hampshire Senator John Sununu could be looking at the same fate in 2008. As one of the strongest supporters of President Bush's failed policies in Iraq, Sununu now holds only a 43% favorability rating, according to a recent survey. Click here to see more on John Sununu and his decline in approval rating. Even worse for Sununu, when he is matched up in a race with popular Democrat Jeanne Shaheen (who has yet to declare), he loses by 16 points. Gordon Smith Does the Flip Flop Oregon Senator Gordon Smith styles himself as a moderate, but time and again over the last few years, he has gone to bat for the Bush administration when it counts. And Oregonians are starting to see right through it. A recent poll conducted by the DSCC found that only 34% of Oregonians plan to vote for Smith next year, while 45% say they will consider voting for someone else. Click here to learn more about this recent poll on Gordon Smith. The Thumpin' Continues in Kentucky Even Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader in the Senate, is facing serious problems, with his state's Republican governor embroiled in a scandal and an approval rating of only 48%. Click here to see how supporting President Bush has hurt Mitch McConnell. Meanwhile, Democratic challengers in other states are showing early promise. In Colorado, where the GOP incumbent is retiring, Democratic Rep. Mark Udall already has more than $2.5 million in the bank and in Maine, Democratic Rep. Tom Allen has raised $1.5 million in his bid to unseat GOP incumbent Susan Collins. Add it all up and Democrats could not ask for a better start in our battle to preserve and expand our Senate majority in 2008. But if we know anything, it is that no matter what the polls or fundraising numbers say, in the end, these races will all be competitive and will come down to who wants it more. There is a popular, but false, belief that Democrats trounced Republicans in the Senate elections in 2006. It is worth remembering that for all our successes, we won in Montana by less than 3,000 votes and won in Virginia by just 7,000 votes. If either of those states went the other way, Republicans would control the Senate today. That's why we've got to stay vigilant. That's why we need to keep Republicans on the run. Sincerely, J.B.
