It is with deep sorrow and sadness that I have to inform you that Joyce Wilson passed from the world last night (March 1). She is the person that invited me onto the DDC Board and suggested that I become recording secretary. I really enjoyed seeing Joyce and with Barry, her husband, it was always fun to converse with them and it was always a wonderful experience to bump into Joyce in downtown Davis. She was fun! I will miss her as will others. Because she died so suddenly and unexpected, everyone is in shock. Joyce was currently serving on the Davis Democratic Club Board of Directors. Barry forgot to note that mischievous twinkle in her eye that accompanied her smile when I would bump into her down town. I am going to miss her. Ry Obituary Joyce Ann Wilson (nee Sisson) died unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism accompanying a recently discovered cancer in the ICU of Sutter-Davis hospital early in the morning of Friday, March 2nd. She was 75 years old. Joyce was born November 14, 1931 in Benton Harbor, Michigan and spent her early years in St. Joseph, Michigan. Joyce attended Michigan State University, receiving her BS in Home Economics in 1953. She taught school briefly in a small farming community in Michigan. She then moved to Chicago and worked as a home economist at the Quaker Oats Company, quality control branch. While there, she met and married biology student Barry Wilson in 1956. The couple moved to Los Angeles the next year where she worked as a recipe developer for the Carnation Company, comfortably located in a penthouse facility on the "Miracle Mile," while Barry studied for his PhD in Zoology at UCLA. She briefly wrote a newsletter for the Santa Monica Consumer Cooperative before moving to Davis in 1962, when her husband was hired as an assistant professor in UCD's Department of Poultry Husbandry. She lived in Davis ever since 1962. After arriving in Davis, Joyce developed recipes for UC Cooperative Extension that were incorporated into statewide school lunch programs. She was secretary of the Unitarian Church for many years before returning to school. She obtained her teaching credential from UC Davis in 1989 and taught for a short time in Davis area schools. Around town, Joyce was known for her ready smile, gentle wit and activism. Joyce was a long-time member of the Executive Board of the Davis Democratic Club and worked for the betterment of the Davis Community. She organized events and forums such as one recently held on Ecology by the Davis Democratic Club. Joyce volunteered for University and department activities. She assisted her husband in the Departments of Avian (now Animal) Science and Environmental Toxicology. In addition, Joyce served as an Associate Editor of a scientific journal, The Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology. A heart valve transplant in 2002 slowed Joyce Wilson down, but did not stop her participation in the community. She is survived by her husband, Barry Wilson, a professor at UC Davis, and her son, Sean Wilson, an Assistant Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Mississippi. Sean attended Davis schools, including Valley Oak Elementary School and Holmes Junior High School. Ultimately, he obtained his PhD in Physiology at UCD. She is also survived by two brothers, that still reside in Michigan. Ronald Sisson is a businessman and Gary Sisson is an optometrist. Her daughter-in-law, Rachel, is an artist with two young children in Oxford, Mississippi. Joyce's death was sudden and unexpected; her wish was to be cremated. Cards and remembrances may be sent to her home address: 1108 Dartmouth Place, Davis, CA. Donations to be made to a yet to be specified fund will be announced at a later date. Please phone tollfree. ------ Forwarded Message Date: 6 Mar 2007 08:47:16 -0000 To: Subject: Today is Call-In to Congress Day (pass it on!) Today (Tuesday) is our day to lead in the unified phone campaign to get Congress to finally stand against Bush?s unending war in Iraq. In the last few hours, we?ve learned of a possible amendment to Bush?s supplemental Appropriation request for $93 billion more for Iraq. The amendment, written by our allies, would call for a fully-funded withdrawal of U.S. troops within a set timetable. This would mean that a vote for the appropriation would be a vote against the war. This is an exciting development ? a longshot, but worth fighting for. So when we call our Congress members today, ask them to support a ?fully-funded withdrawal with timetable? amendment to the Iraq supplemental. But if such an amendment is NOT adopted, insist that our Representatives vote NO on the supplemental. Our special toll-free number into Congress is 1-888-851-1879. Mobilize all PDA members and supporters to phone their Congressional offices today. Don?t stop after calling your own Representative. To ensure that a ?fully-funded withdrawal? amendment comes to the floor for a vote, contact one or two members of the Democratic leadership: Rep. Louise Slaughter (NY), Chair, Rules Committee (which decides whether amendments get to the floor); Speaker Nancy Pelosi; House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD); Rep. Rahm Emanuel (IL); Rep. James Clybourn (SC). Make your call(s) toll-free l-888-851-1879 -- or call 202-224-3121. Each day until March 13, different national groups in our alliance are coordinating phone calls to Congress. Today, Tues., March 6 is PDA?s day. (March 7 -- CodePink/Global Exchange; March 8 ? GSFP; March 9 - Peace Action; March 12 ? UFPJ; March 13 - All groups together!) *** After you?ve done your phone calls, please listen to the new podcast: Rep. Lynn Woolsey Talks to PDA . This was recorded last week. Congresswoman and PDA Advisory Board member Lynn Woolsey discusses the key role PDA is playing on Capitol Hill and across the country -- and the need to say ?No? to the Iraq Supplemental. Woolsey also tells Tony Trupiano about the short term future of HR 508, end-the-war legislation. Please share this Podcast with other activists. If you don?t think PDA is making a difference, listen to Rep. Woolsey. Please take a minute to share with us how things went with your call! Maximum term of 25 years. The President has refused to say that he will not pardon Scooter Libby. Joe Wilson, the northern California native whose wife was an undercover CIA agent monitoring nuclear proliferation, has spoken in Davis two times since his wife was exposed by the Bush Administration. By this action, the Bush Administration exposed a whole network, under the corporate name Brewster-Jennings, to retaliation by countries the USA was gathering intelligence on. In other words, the Bush Administration was engaging in treason against its own CIA. It is a sad day, but the truth is coming out. I am taking some satisfaction also that my high school in 1978 produced a guy like Michael Fitzgerald, a Republican appointee of the Bush Administration. Watch out: in December, Alberto Gonzales--Bush's Attorney General--fired 8 heads of U.S. Justice Dept. offices all around the country. They were all Republican appointees of this Bush administration. The other thing they have in common is that they were all investigating political corruption. One was Carol Lam in San Diego, who was trying to continue her investigation of Congressman Duke Cunningham's bribery network. The Board of DDC is meeting tonight at the Blanchard Room of the library in Davis at 7pm. We will have some important things to celebrate. Voters in three dozen Vermont towns want Congress to begin an impeachment probe of Pres. George W. Bush and Vice Pres. Dick Cheney. Two towns, Clarendon and Dover, voted the measure down. Nearly a half dozen towns agreed to not take up, or table, the resolution. There are 251 towns in Vermont, but not all hold town meetings. More than a dozen towns passed measures calling for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, and to care for them when they were back on U.S. soil. Dover also rejected the troop measure. About 20 towns had one of the items warned on their town meeting ballot, while many others took up the issue during "other business" at the end of the meeting. The votes come after a whirlwind, four-day tour of Vermont with antiwar icon Cindy Sheehan and three Vermont Iraq War veterans, along with organizers of the resolutions. Sheehan testified before a state Senate committee on Friday, along with war supporters. "I'm happy with it. I think we've got a very good number of towns that have reported so far and passing it, and it's pretty overwhelming that didn't pass. And, just one that voted it down," said Jimmy Leas, a South Burlington lawyer who crafted the troop withdrawal resolution. Newfane Selectman Dan DeWalt is the major organizer of the impeachment resolutions. His effort has drawn global media attention and scorn. Last year, six towns passed impeachment resolutions. The impeachment resolutions have passed so far in Bristol, Burke, Calais, Craftsbury, Dummerston, East Montpelier, Greensboro, Guilford, Grafton, Hartland, Jamaica, Jericho, Johnson, Marlboro, Middlebury, Montgomery, Morristown, Newbury, Newfane, Peru, Plainfield, Putney, Richmond, Rochester, Roxbury, St. Johnsbury, Springfield, Stannard, Sunderland, Townshend, Tunbridge, Vershire, Warren, Westminster, Wilmington, and Woodbury, according to organizers. Organizers based their information on reports from people in each town. DeWalt said organizers will use these votes to urge state lawmakers to take up a measure in the House calling for Bush's impeachment. The bill is currently in the House Judiciary Committee. "This is clearly not a cry of protest, but the start of action ??? an impeachment insurrection that will lead to the reclamation of our Constitution," said DeWalt. "Vermonters are angry and energized. We are taking the power that is sovreign in us and will use it to restore the Constitution. We will show the world that America has not sunk to the depths of violent madness that is the Bush administration." Several towns voted to not take up the measure: Bakersfield, Londonderry, Dorset, Stamford, and Walden. Additionally, 20 towns approved a measure calling for troops to be withdrawn from Iraq: Bristol, Calais, Cornwall, Greensboro, Guilford, Hardwick, Jamaica, Jericho, Johnson, Marshfield, Middlebury, Newfane, Peru, Plymouth, Rockingham, Roxbury, St. Johnsbury, Townshend, Waldon, and Woodbury. According to a Guardian reader, in Pomfret the impeachment resolution was moved under "other business," but a voter countered with an amendment not to vote on the resolution because many of the town's residents had already left the meeting. Voters agreed and voted to table the resolution was 43 to 28. In this context the troop resolution was not moved. Supporters of the measure, however, will raise the issue again. In Middlebury, where Gov. Jim Douglas, a Republican, is the town moderator voters approved both the impeachment and troop withdrawal measures. Douglas, ironically, was the chairman of Bush's 2000 election committee and 2004 reelection committee in Vermont. Ellen McKay, a backer of the impeachment measure, said some members of the Middlebury Selectboard and Douglas tried to limit debate to one minute per person. Douglas also questioned whether something that was not warned should warrant a vote. "But, there were a lot of people in Middlebury who understood what other business was going to mean and this huge issue for our community," said McKay, who says the Iraq War, proportionally, has cost Middlebury $8 million to fund the war. In Dover, the impeachment topic sparked a heated debate. "I do not want my senators or representatives for the next two years trying to bring down this president. I want them to focus on bringing the best possible outcome to the chaos that is now in Iraq," said Laura Sabilia, a school board member and sister of four brothers currently in the armed forces. Sabilia trembled as she spoke, and at times had tears running down her face. "I do not believe that demanding that our troops come home now will help and I will not debate this with anyone." A supporter countered that the impeachment resolution wasn't about the war, but the Constitution. "We have to stand up and respect the constitution that our [founding fathers] stand for. Our troops will not come home during their time in office, and as far as impeachment goes, it only means they are investigated and whatever happens of it will happen," said Sue Rand. "It's not about removing Bush and Cheney but investigating." Gloria Levine, the person who brought up the resolutions up at town meeting, was dumfounded by the rejection. "I'm not disappointed, I'm just absolutely dumbfounded at how the things said today came in light of the facts that nine more military personnel were killed in Iraq," said Levine. In Jericho, home of Democratic House Speaker Gaye Symington, who is not supportive of the impeachment measure, voters approved the impeachment resolution 88-67, as well as the troop withdrawal measure. Leas, and other backers, hope the impeachment and troop withdrawal measures will help to focus Vermont's congressional delegation on ending the war, and investigating Bush and Cheney for what h they believe were deliberate lies to get the nation into the war. "This war is going to continue for another year or two years if this funding request is approved, and we don't have confidence that they will vote to end the war," said Leas. "It's time for the people to get involved and the people have to push what may not be on their agenda ??? that's our leadership." The Vermont Legislature recently approved measures in both the House and Senate calling for an immediate and orderly withdrawal of troops from Iraq. In Stamford, voters tabled both articles. Helen Fields, a co-organizer of the Stamford effort to get the resolutions on the warning, was disappointed, but hopes to bring the issue up again in the near future. "We have parents in our town with [sons in Baghdad] that are at risk, so our town has a lot of people that very much want this war to be over and don't quite understand why their children's lives are at stake," said Fields. "It's hard for me to say that this vote was a vote for or against the articles. I think this vote was for or against discussion on a very debatable topic. People have very strong feelings whether or not the president should be impeached and we have very strong feelings about pulling out of a war that many soldiers and soldiers' families have made the ultimate sacrifices for." Here is the text of each of the two resolutions: IMPEACHMENT RESOLUTION Whereas George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney have: 1. deliberately misled the nation about the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war, 2. condoned the torture of prisoners in violation of the Geneva Convention and US law, 3. approved illegal electronic surveillance of American citizens without a warrant, and, Whereas these actions have undermined our Constitutional system of government, damaged the reputation of America, and threatened our national security, Therefore, the voters of the town of _____________________ call upon the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate these charges, and if the investigation supports the charges, vote to impeach George W. Bush and Richard B. Cheney as provided in the Constitution of the United States of America. This resolution shall be signed by the Town Clerk and forwarded to both the Speaker and the Clerk of the US House of Representatives, and Representative John Conyers of the House Judiciary Committee. SOLDIERS HOME NOW RESOLUTION "Shall the voters of the town of ____________________ advise the President, Congress and Vermont's state and federal office holders that _____________________ and its citizens strongly support the men and women serving in all branches of the United States Armed Forces in Iraq and believe that the best way to support them is to bring each and every one of them home now and take good care of them when they get home." -- You can update your email preferences at: http://www.dfalink.com/edit_profile.php?t=privacy ------------------------------------------------------------------ Paid for by Democracy for America, www.democracyforamerica.com, and not authorized by any candidate. The Lee Amendment calls for a fully-funded, orderly withdrawal of all U.S. troops and military contractors from Iraq by the end of 2007. The last week has seen two concurrent developments: > 1) Furious backroom dealing and arm-twisting on Capitol Hill to get > progressive Congress members to fall in behind the Democratic leadership?s > Iraq bill that has loopholes and delays that could prolong the U.S. > occupation. 2) Grassroots lobbying of Congressional offices demanding that > Democrats heed the November election results by getting our troops safely out > of Iraq?s civil war ? no loopholes, no delays. So please call (and get others to call) Congress behind the Lee Amendment and fully-funded withdrawal by the end of 2007. The toll-free number into Congress is 1-888-851-1879. (If you prefer emailing to Congress, do that.) Urge Congress members to co-sponsor or support the Lee Amendment (see text here ), and demand that Democratic leaders at least allow a vote on the amendment. It is antiwar sentiment among the broad public, and pressure from activists, that has pushed Democratic leaders to set some timetables. But the leadership?s Iraq bill (after Bush certifies that ?benchmarks? are being met) would keep U.S. troops in Iraq until August 2008 -- and indefinitely as part of anti-terrorist or training missions. Each day since March 5, different national groups in our alliance ? vets, military families, and peace groups ? have taken responsibility to mobilize phone calls to Congress from their members. John Edwards' (NC) decision not to participate in a Fox News-sponsored Democratic debate in Nevada, the show's roundtable ignored entirely Edwards' explicitly stated reasons for withdrawing from the event. Indeed, the panel discussion included no mention of a March 9 email, in which the Edwards campaign cited two reasons why they had pulled out of the debate: Fox News' "blatant lies about Senator [Barack] Obama's [D-IL] background" and the network's decision "to give [right-wing pundit] Ann Coulter a platform to spew more hate a few days after her bigoted attack on Senator Edwards and the gay community." Host Chris Wallace led off the segment by airing a controversial joke Fox News chairman and CEO Roger Ailes made while accepting the Radio-Television News Directors Association & Foundation's First Amendment Leadership Award : "[I]t is true that Barack Obama is on the move. I don't know if it's true that President Bush called [Pakistani President Pervez] Musharraf and said: 'Why can't we catch this guy?' " Wallace went on to report that the Nevada State Democratic Party later cancelled the debate entirely, citing Ailes' joke as one of the reasons for its decision. After Wallace read from the Nevada state party's March 9 statement -- in which it stated that Ailes' comments about Obama "went too far" -- the panel launched into a discussion that repeatedly returned to Edwards' decision not to participate. Weekly Standard editor and Fox News contributor Bill Kristol accused Edwards of "pandering to the left wing of the party." National Public Radio senior national correspondent and Fox News contributor Juan Williams said that not participating in the debate was "contrary to the principles that should be advocated by anybody who says they're liberal or progressive," adding that "it should be liberals who are flying the flag for open and full-throated debate." Fox News Washington managing editor Brit Hume said that Edwards "is really the key player in this" and that his decision "pleases the wing of the party which is active and important in the nominating process." But despite focusing the discussion largely on Edwards' opting out of the Nevada debate, neither Wallace nor any of the panelists noted that Edwards had cited two specific incidents involving Fox News as his reasons for withdrawing. On March 6, Edwards' deputy campaign manager Jonathan Prince emailed the Daily Kos' Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, writing that Edwards would "not be participating in the Fox debate," and added: "By the end of March, we will have attended three presidential forums in Nevada -- and there are already at least three proposed Nevada debates." The email concluded: "We're definitely going to debate in Nevada, but we don't see why this needs to be one of them." Later on March 9, the Edwards campaign sent an email to supporters, stating that "Fox News has already proven they have no intention of providing 'fair and balanced' coverage of any Democrat in this election." In support of this assertion, the statement noted that Fox News has "run blatant lies about Senator Obama's background" and that "Fox was only too happy to give Ann Coulter a platform to spew more hate a few days after her bigoted attack on Senator Edwards and the gay community." Media Matters documented both of the instances to which the Edwards campaign referred. As Media Matters noted , on January 19, several Fox News hosts touted a since-discredited InsightMag.com article reporting that "researchers connected to" Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) disclosed that Obama "spent at least four years in a so-called Madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia" and that "the specific Madrassa Mr. Obama attended" might have taught "a Wahhabi doctrine that denies the rights of non-Muslims." Media Matters also noted that Fox News' Hannity & Colmes hosted Coulter on March 5 to explain her comments to the Conservative Political Action Conference, where she referred to Edwards as a "faggot." On that program, Coulter claimed that the word "isn't offensive to gays. It has nothing to do with gays. It's a schoolyard taunt, meaning wuss. And unless you're telling me that John Edwards is gay, it was not applied to a gay person." During the panel discussion, Hume also claimed that "what Edwards knows is that while he may be at war against Fox News, Fox News is not and cannot be at war with him," adding that Fox News correspondents "Carl Cameron and Jim Angle and Major Garrett and you, Chris, in interviews, and I, as a news anchor on a nightly program, are going to continue to treat him in the same fair way that we've always treated him." However, Media Matters has previously noted numerous examples of inaccurate reporting and misinformation about Democrats by Cameron , Angle , Garrett , Wallace , and Hume . >From the March 11 edition of Fox Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday: > > AILES [video clip]: Any candidate for high office of either party who believes > he can blacklist any news organization is making a terrible mistake about > journalists. > > WALLACE: That was the chairman of Fox News Channel, Roger Ailes, responding > after former Senator John Edwards announced he would not participate in a > debate this summer being sponsored by Fox News and the Nevada Democratic > Party. > > And we're back now with Brit, Nina, Bill, and Juan. Howard Dean" Reply-To: Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2007 12:06:33 -0500 To: john chendo Subject: How far does this go? Dear john, This could be George Bush's Watergate. Eight U.S. Attorneys, fired because they wouldn't follow orders by the Bush Administration. Fired because they refused to go on witch-hunts against Democrats, or ignored the Republicans' blatant disregard for the law. Fired so that they could be replaced by talking heads and loyalists of the Bush Administration. When Scooter Libby was convicted, I said that this administration reminded me of Richard Nixon's administration -- more obsessed with their critics than with the jobs the American people entrust them with. But this latest White House scandal takes that comparison to another level. Just what did George Bush, Karl Rove, Alberto Gonzales and the rest of the Bush White House and Republican senior staff know about the Justice Department firings -- and when did they know it? Join us in our effort to use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to try to cut through the White House's nonsense -- the finger-pointing, the lies, the cover-up. Americans have a right to access any and all records between the Republican National Committee, other Republican party committees, and the Department of Justice in order to get to the bottom of this investigation. Sign our FOIA request: http://www.democrats.org/AttorneysFOIA "I can accept that mistakes were made." When Attorney General Alberto Gonzales uttered those words yesterday, he admitted what many had suspected: that eight U.S. prosecutors were improperly fired -- and, because of a Patriot Act provision slipped in by Congressional Republicans, replaced with Bush Administration cronies. The fired attorneys included: * Carol Lam, who prosecuted former Republican Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham for bribery, and who was actively investigating Republican House Appropriations Chairman Jerry Lewis at the time of her dismissal; * Paul Charlton, who was investigating Republican Congressman Rick Renzi for bribery and illegal land dealings, and who had publicly clashed with the Bush Administration over the merits of the death penalty; and * David Iglesias, a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and the basis for Tom Cruise's character in A Few Good Men, who was pressured by Republicans to indict Democratic politicians prior to the 2006 elections. In January, Gonzales claimed that he would "never, ever make a change in a United States attorney for political reasons or if it would in any way jeopardize an ongoing serious investigation." Justice Department officials claimed the firings were part of standard personnel turnover. But when questioned by Congress, Gonzales's deputy, Paul McNulty, claimed they were fired for poor performance -- even though most of the fired attorneys had received excellent performance reviews. Karl Rove, Harriet Miers and President Bush himself were in contact with Gonzales's office about the attorneys. Just weeks after Bush spoke to Gonzales, they were fired. Former Washington state GOP Chairman Chris Vance admitted to pressuring fired U.S. Attorney John McKay to investigate Democrats at the urging of the "White House's political office." And emails released yesterday show that White House deputy political director and former RNC opposition researcher J. Scott Jennings used an RNC email account to talk with Justice Department about the appointment of U.S. Attorney and former Karl Rove aide Tim Griffin. These revelations raise even more questions -- and it's time for answers. Add your name to the FOIA Request, and demand accountability from the White House: http://www.democrats.org/AttorneysFOIA In an all-too-familiar scene, Gonzales's chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, resigned over the scandal. But we won't let Sampson be the fall guy for another Bush Administration cover-up. Dick Cheney's chief of staff, Scooter Libby, already took the fall for the Bush Administration's orchestrated leak of a CIA agent's identity. And incompetent FEMA Director and Bush buddy Michael Brown took the fall for our president's disgraceful reaction to Hurricane Katrina -- while the Gulf Coast remains in shambles. Just like the Nixon Administration, cronyism and corruption has hollowed this White House from the inside-out. It's time for Republicans to stop spinning such a tangled web of deceit to get what they want. Some Democratic Senators have already called for Alberto Gonzales's resignation. But this is part of a much bigger problem. The purge of U.S. Attorneys wasn't a "mistake," as Alberto Gonzales claims. It was part of a long, calculated effort by the Bush Administration and the Republican Party to silence its critics and remain above the law. Help us use this FOIA request to go beyond the lies and reveal the truth behind the White House, Justice Department, and Republican Party's corruption. Hopefully I will see you all on Wednesday. An extra thanks for all of the support-- it has helped immeasurably. A thank you and an invite Dear Friends, Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and love that are helping me through these tough times following that horrific fire that burnt me pretty badly. I would normally write you by hand but I still have difficulty holding a pen and my hand shakes a bit so my writing is even less intelligible than usual. Anyway, aside from that, and some difficulty with a few things like walking and sleeping on my back, I?m doing really well, much better I think than the doctors thought I would be at this time. I am going through a lot of physical therapy and taking things one day at a time, with every day a little better than the day before. The love and support of my girlfriend Jenny, my family and friends, and even some people I haven?t met before, gives me added strength and total confidence I?ll be back in the saddle before too long. I don?t know how I can thank everyone enough. I just feel like having a party. So I decided to have one. I?m turning the Big 30 on March 22. My folks have reserved the Oddfellows Hall in Davis (yes, they?re members!) and I?ve lined up a great band (not Pop?s!) and my friends are putting together some good food and drinks. It?ll go from about 7-10 pm. I?m looking forward to seeing everyone and thanking you in person for your caring about me. Everybody should be so lucky. I hope you can make it.
