Greetings Davis Democratic Club members,

The following is by Joyce's husband, Barry Wilson. Joyce was currently
serving on the Davis Democratic Club Board of Directors. Barry forgot to
note that mischievous twinkle in her eye that accompanied her smile when I
would bump into her down town. I am going to miss her.

Obituary

Joyce Ann Wilson (nee Sisson) died unexpectedly from a pulmonary embolism
accompanying a recently discovered cancer in the ICU of Sutter-Davis
hospital early in the morning of Friday, March 2nd. She was 75 years old.
Joyce was born November 14, 1931 in Benton Harbor, Michigan and spent her
early years in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Joyce attended Michigan State University, receiving her BS in Home Economics
in 1953. She taught school briefly in a small farming community in
Michigan. She then moved to Chicago and worked as a home economist at the
Quaker Oats Company, quality control branch. While there, she met and
married biology student Barry Wilson in 1956. The couple moved to Los
Angeles the next year where she worked as a recipe developer for the
Carnation Company, comfortably located in a penthouse facility on the
"Miracle Mile," while Barry studied for his PhD in Zoology at UCLA. She
briefly wrote a newsletter for the Santa Monica Consumer Cooperative before
moving to Davis in 1962, when her husband was hired as an assistant
professor in UCD's Department of Poultry Husbandry. She lived in Davis ever
since 1962.

After arriving in Davis, Joyce developed recipes for UC Cooperative
Extension that were incorporated into statewide school lunch programs. She
was secretary of the Unitarian Church for many years before returning to
school. She obtained her teaching credential from UC Davis in 1989 and
taught for a short time in Davis area schools. Around town, Joyce was known
for her ready smile, gentle wit and activism.

Joyce was a long-time member of the Executive Board of the Davis Democratic
Club and worked for the betterment of the Davis Community. She organized
events and forums such as one recently held on Ecology by the Davis
Democratic Club.

Joyce volunteered for University and department activities. She assisted
her husband in the Departments of Avian (now Animal) Science and
Environmental Toxicology. In addition, Joyce served as an Associate Editor
of a scientific journal, The Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and
Toxicology.

A heart valve transplant in 2002 slowed Joyce Wilson down, but did not stop
her participation in the community. She is survived by her husband, Barry
Wilson, a professor at UC Davis, and her son, Sean Wilson, an Assistant
Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Mississippi. Sean attended
Davis schools, including Valley Oak Elementary School and Holmes Junior High
School. Ultimately, he obtained his PhD in Physiology at UCD. She is also
survived by two brothers, that still reside in Michigan. Ronald Sisson is a
businessman and Gary Sisson is an optometrist. Her daughter-in-law, Rachel,
is an artist with two young children in Oxford, Mississippi.

Joyce's death was sudden and unexpected; her wish was to be cremated. Cards
and remembrances may be sent to her home address: 1108 Dartmouth Place,
Davis, CA. Donations to be made to a yet to be specified fund will be
announced at a later date.
