Subject: Speak up to Fight Media Consolidation

Dear john, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin
is trying to ease the regulations on Big Media once again. Fewer
restrictions on media concentration means fewer choices and fewer voices
heard. Let your voice be heard on October 31st at the Public Hearing on
Media Localism. Minorities, women, seniors and people with disabilities are
already underrepresented at news agencies and their issues are being
overlooked by the media giants. Media ownership is an important civil
rights issue. A diverse media is one that is inclusive of minorities and
women in content (what we see and hear), employment (who writes, reports and
produces what we see and hear), and, most importantly, ownership (who owns
the companies that dictate what we see and hear) so that the stories of all
Americans can be told, and the voices of all Americans can be heard. (For
more information on the dangers of media consolidation, click here!)
<http://www.civilrights.org/issues/communication/> TAKE ACTION! Tell
policymakers to stop giving in to Big Media¹s demands by allowing more
consolidation in local markets. Attend the media localism hearing in
Washington, DC on Wednesday, October 31. FCC chairman Kevin Martin is
trying to ease restrictions on consolidation by the end of the year‹and he¹s
trying to do it under the radar. Don¹t let him get away with it. Our media
is becoming less and less diverse everyday, with the majority of media
outlets nationwide owned and controlled by white males. Their content is
reflectively homogenous and important messages of diversity and democracy
are being overlooked or even silenced. Stop the slippery slope that has
already limited the stories and perspectives that we get from our local
news. Come to the hearing, testify and demand that your voice be heard.
Participate in the rally outside the FCC and put the dangers of media
conglomeration in the spotlight. FCC Public Hearing on Media Localism
When: Wednesday, October 31 from 9:00am 2:00pm Where: FCC Headquarters,
445 12th Street, SW, Washington, DC (nearest metro is the Smithsonian) The
hearing is free and open to the public and will include public testimony
from an open microphone. Be sure to arrive early if you plan on signing up
to testify. If you can¹t be there in person, you can still tell the FCC how
you feel by sending a message here!
