Just hours after a federal judge shot down the White House's claim to
sweeping immunity from Congressional oversight, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.)
fired off a round of letters renewing his demand for testimony from Karl
Rove and White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten.

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman sent a letter to White House Counsel
Fred Fielding asking whether the two officials will agree to testify in
light of today's ruling

The investigation at issue is the allegedly political firings

"Today's decision renders the grounds for Mr. Bolten and Mr. Rove's refusal

Leahy also sent a terse letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey asking
whether he planned to rescind the legal memos based on the theory of blanket

Please advise me by no later than next Thursday, August 7, when you will
withdraw the erroneous [Office of Legal Counsel] opinion from Stephen
Bradbury relied upon by the White House to justify its non-compliance with
congressional subpoenas since that opinion has been repudiated by the court.

In addition, please inform me whether the court's decision will cause you to
re-evaluate your memos and those from [Office of Legal Counsel] in support
of overbroad and unsubstantiated executive privilege claims not only in the
U.S. Attorneys investigation, but also in other matters, like the claims
used to block Congress from investigating warrantless wiretapping, the leak
of the name of undercover CIA agent Valerie Plame for political retribution,
and White House interference in the Environmental Protection Agency's
decision-making. Which of these do you now intend to withdraw?

Leahy sounds like he's asking for a complete surrender in this ongoing
battle over White House officials' testimony. But there's a lot of
litigation still to go in this case.

Greetings All,

This is a less than 3 week reminder for the Emily and Jerry's Ice Cream
Social.  There will be frozen yogurt at this event for those that are
lactose intollerant.  Also, there will be 6 or more citronella bucket
candles and insect repellant by the patio door for those that worry about
mosquitos.

The date of this event is August 21, 2008.

This annual event is held at the home of Jerry and Teresa Kaneko and their
cat, Emily (Of Emily's List fame).  This is the 14th or 15th edition of this
event

Event Address:  556 Reed Drive
                Davis, CA 

The cost is a suggested $15 donation at the door.  

An additional annoucement is that if any club member would like to bring an
ice cream topping or condiment, it would be greatly appreciated.  This could
be chocolate syrup, strawberry syrup, butterscotch, nuts, bananas, or
whatever else you would like to put over your ice cream.  

This is a Thursday evening event, scheduled for 6PM.  The Soapbox will open
at 6:30PM.  Come for ice cream at an event perfectly timed for after dinner
dessert.  Come hear all the Yolo County electeds and political pundits speak
at the club's annual soapbox event.  All club members are invited and can
address the group from the Soapbox.  Voice your political statements to all
assembled.  Expected guests that will speak include: Former Davis City
Councilman Jerry Kaneko (MC of the soapbox); All of the Davis City
Councilmembers including active Davis Democrat Club members Stephen Souza,
Sue Greenwald, Lamar Heystek, Don Saylor; our State Assembly representative,
Lois Wolk; and Yolo County Supervisors Jim Provenza, Helen Thomson, Mariko
Yamada and School Board Member Sheila Allen.  Also expected to attend and
speak are another Davis School Board member and candidates for School Board.

Another annoucement is the IOOF Davis Lodge 169, which has many of our
Democratic Club members in it, have chartered a bus to the 41st Summer of
Love in Golden Gate park on September 7, 2008.  If you would like to go to
this event, the cost last year was $30/person.  Please contact Bob
Bockwinkel for details at 219-1896.  You can leave your check or money at
Lyon Real Estate -- "Will Call."  You receive a tie-dyed t-shirt to remember
your trip to this event.  The bus leaves at 7AM on that Saturday Morning and
returns to Davis at 9PM that night.  Bob is also trying to make available
balloon animals for everyone from Dilly Dally The Clown ($1 donation to
Dilly Dally is requested).  Lastly, people are encouraged to bring ice
chests, food and other items needed for a full day at the park in San
Francisco, including blankets and low folding chairs.  Call Bob for details

listening to their constituents, they are in Washington staging phony
"sit-ins" and playing games with America's pocketbooks.  At a time when Big
Oil profits hit historical highs, Republicans in Washington are blocking
bills that would help ease the price of gas for people across California and
the country.  But don't just believe me--conservative commentator Bob Novak
in his Evans-Novak Political Report said: "Republican rejection of a
Democratic offer to allow four specific GOP amendments (including one on
drilling) signaled that Republicans might prefer abusing the Democrats for

must think that Americans can't see through the smoke-and-mirror games they

to oppose common sense plans to lower the price of fuel and expand the use

Pick up the New York Times this morning and read the headline: "Book on
Obama Hopes to Repeat Anti-Kerry Feat." Yes, Jerome Corsi, the right wing
fringe author who made his bones smearing the Catholic Church and lying
about my military record, is back atop the best seller list with an
anti-Obama book chock full of lies. If your blood isn't boiling yet, read
this: "This is a fact: Today Barack Obama is subject to what is probably the
greatest concentrated attacks of smears, lies and innuendo in the lifetime
of anyone who reads these words." Those are the words of Brent Budowsky in
Editor and Publisher. He knows what he's talking about. And it's not just
Barack: up and down the ticket and all across the country, the rightwing
smear machine is ramping up attacks on Democrats.
We've seen this movie before. The Republicans, without ideas, start running
a negative campaign filled with personal attacks and misleading ads. The
attacks get condemned, but they get lots of attention and get played on TV
endlessly. We've got to fight every way we can. I'm going on television and
the radio pushing back every chance I get - just like I did on MSNBC a few

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR YOLO COUNTY FAIR VOTER REG DRIVE THIS WEEK
Yolo United needs volunteers to staff information/voter registration 
booths at the Yolo County Fair. The booths will be organized by the Yolo 
County Democratic Central Committee and the Davis Democratic Club. 
Volunteers will be trained in voter registration techniques and protocol.

The fair will run from 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13th, to 10 p.m. 
Sunday, August 17th. Volunteers can work two-hour or four-hour shifts 
and may be teamed with a local Yolo County elected official or

PHONEBANKING TO BATTLEGROUND STATES AT YU DAVIS HQ
Phone banking to battle ground states will begin at the Yolo United 
Davis Headquarters behind Save Mart (1801 Hanover St, Ste. C) on Monday, 
August 18th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Phone banking nights will be held 
every Monday and Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and every Saturday from

NO ON PROP 8 HOLDS COMMUNITY MEETING
This November, California will vote on Proposition 8, which proposes to 
amend our state Constitution to exclude same sex-couples from the 
fundamental right of marriage. Many same-sex couples who have married 
are our neighbors and we've been touched by how important the freedom to 
marry is for their families and for our community. As local leaders and 
concerned members of our community, we are asking for your help.

On August 19th and August 21st, we will have our kickoff meetings for 
the Yolo County No on Prop 8 campaign where we will discuss ways to

Social.  

The date of this event is Thursday, August 21, 2008.

This is the 15th annual event is held at the home of Jerry and Teresa Kaneko
and their cat, Emily (Of Emily's List fame).

The cost is a suggested $10 donation at the door.  $15 or more will be
accepted for Senator Obama and the Davis Campaign Headquarters.

This is a Thursday evening event, scheduled for 6PM.  The Soapbox will open
at 6:30PM.  Come for ice cream at an event perfectly timed for after dinner
dessert.  Come hear all the Yolo County electeds and political pundits speak
at the club's annual soapbox event.  All club members are invited and can
address the group from the Soapbox.  Voice your political statements to all
assembled.  Expected guests that will speak include: Former Davis City
Councilman Jerry Kaneko (MC of the soapbox); All of the Davis City
Councilmembers including active Davis Democrat Club members, Sue Greenwald,

for those that fear getting bitten by insects at this event.  Also, there is
a healthy assortement of frozen yogurt for those that are lactose
intollerant and all types of toppings, including cookies to sprinkle over
the ice cream or frozen yogurt.  Soft drinks are also available to enjoy in
addition to the bowls of ice cream.

It is with a heavy heart, that I regret to inform the club, that Mary Lou
Hernandez passed at 3PM today, August 20, 2008. 

I personally am in shock.  She was a fighter and we were told that she had a
good chance of living another 4 weeks.  So, I am not ready for this.  Where
others would have given up a year ago, Mary Lou lived each day in very high
spirits, with a positive outlook and optimism that would not be dampened.
It was always a joy to see her walking with her husband around town.  She
was very happy to be alive each day.

She will be greatly missed by all, especially the DDC Board.  Mary Lou

She was a very hard worker at events, like the Yolo County Booth and Davis
Campaign Headquarters, and very outspoken at meetings.  I personally am very
saddened by her death.  I am hoping that Mary Lou will be remembered at the
Ice Cream Social with a minute or two of silent meditation or prayer.
Please also remember Julia Sanchez, who was Mary Lou's close and dear
friend.  They worked together in all club activities and joined the DDC
board together.  They were so close, that they seemed to be telepathic and
seemed to know what the other was thinking.  I thought that they were
sisters for years and was shocked to learn that they were not.

This month, the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs released a
report highlighting a spike in hate crimes against LGBT people in June and
July of this year.  This disturbing report reminds us that LGBT people
continue to be targets of bias-motivated violence while the law continues to
fail them.  The law does not provide federal officials with the law
enforcement tools that they need to prosecute these crimes for what they are
-- bias-motivated hate crimes -- and it does not provide local law
enforcement with the resources that they need to prosecute hate crimes at
the state and local level.
 
Barack Obama has made strengthening and expanding the federal hate crimes
law a priority.  
 
?        As a United States Senator, he co-sponsored the bill that would
expand hate crimes protections to include crimes based on sexual orientation
or gender identity.  The bill also would provide local law enforcement
agencies with federal aid in fighting and prosecuting hate crimes.

?        He cast the critical 60th vote that prevented the bill from being
defeated by a Republican-sponsored filibuster.  [2007 Senate Vote #350]

?        He has pledged to continue his support for enacting these
protections into law if elected President, promising earlier this year to
?place the full weight of my administration behind the enactment of the
Matthew Shepard Act to outlaw hate crimes... on the basis of sexual

?        He has pledged to reinvigorate enforcement of all hate crime laws

While Barack Obama has been fighting to expand hate crimes protections, John
McCain has been standing in the way.  He has consistently stood in the way
of the bill becoming law.
 
?        He voted against the hate crimes bill in 2000.  [2000 Senate Vote

?        He voted against the hate crimes bill in 2002.  [2002 Senate Vote
#147]

?        He voted against the hate crimes bill in 2004.  [2004 Senate Vote
#114]

?        In 2007, he was the only member of the Senate to not cast a vote at

President Bush has threatened to veto hate crimes legislation, and John
McCain is promising to yet again follow in his footsteps on an issue
important to the LGBT community.
 
Last year, Damien Skipper lost his brother Ryan in a brutal hate crime.
Ryan, just 25 years old, was beaten, stabbed and killed just because he was
gay.  Ryan?s family has since become forceful advocates for expanding the
federal hate crimes law, and they support Senator Obama in large part
because he is committed to passage of a federal hate crimes law. Damien

this past week).  Betty Weir is coming home from the hospital either today,

home to the Davis Democratic Club for the Fall Barbecue, which is normally
in September.  We will be joined this year by Yolo United.  The reason that
this event is on August 28th is that Stephen will have on his big screen TV,
Senator Obama accepting the Democratic Nomination for President.  The

Dear Davis Democratic Club Members and Board Members,

I just wanted everyone to know that Mary Lou's family appreciates all of the
phone calls and cards that have been coming in since Mary Lou's passing.
Please continue to send cards, letters or notes to the family, if you are so
moved and have not done so as of yet.  They are greatly appreciated and help
the family to understand how greatly this woman was apprciated by the club.
I served on the DDC Board for over 10 years with her and she attended every
meeting until she became ill.  You cannot help but to grow to appreciate
people over that length of time, seeing them on a monthly basis at sometimes
very emotionally charged meetings.  People have their opinions and Mary Lou
was very outspoken.  She will be missed.

Memorial and Funeral Service:
There will be a Rosary on August 26, Tuesday night at 7PM at St James Parish
Church.  

The following day, Wednesday morning, August 27, at 10 AM, there will be a
funeral service at St James Parish Church.  Immediately following the
service there will be a reception at the St James Parish Hall.
