Please pass this important info on to one & all... Thx. >From www.peterbcollins.com/challenge The Peter B. Challenge An important message for supporters of Progressive Talk Radio: We are at a very critical stage, and your activism is urgently needed. Without more advertising dollars, Progressive Talk may not survive. ? KRXA in Monterey, my flagship station of which I?m part-owner, is a very lean operation, but is barely breaking even. We just lost one of our biggest, most loyal sponsors, which went out of business. ? KKGN, Green 960 in San Francisco, recently added my show. But upper management has made it clear that the station must be profitable by the end of 2008 or they will change the format. ? KSAC in Sacramento is the most valuable station in my roster. KSAC has strong programming and competitive ratings, but is losing money. The station just notified me and other program producers that it will change format in May if business does not improve. It?s pretty simple: to save and sustain Progressive Talk, we need your help, right now! We need to bring new advertisers and fresh dollars to the stations, and to my program. If we lose more stations, I will not be able to sustain my syndicated program. The PBC Show needs to expand to 15 or 20 cities before it is financially viable. If we lose Sacramento, it will be a serious setback. There?s a three-step strategy that you can use to help us defeat this: 1. If you are in charge of advertising for a business of organization, contact us immediately. Even if you?ve never considered adding radio to your promotional strategy, we can show you how it can be worked in to make your job promoting your group or company so much easier. For a small business, spending $500 a month on progressive radio can deliver excellent returns. 2. Go to any business you shop at, any website you look at, and any organization you belong to and tell them it is time to advertise where people like you listen. Tell them how many hours a day you have Progressive Talk playing, and tell them that folks just like you really go out of your way to patronize those groups and businesses that support Progressive Talk. 3. Finally, you?ll want to practice what you?ve been preaching: participate in a Progressive Talk BUY-cott. Make sure to support any group that interests you who you hear about via Progressive Talk, buy your goods and pay for your services from businesses who advertise on Progressive Talk, and every time you do, without exception, tell them that is why you are doing it. This is far more effective than you can imagine, as most advertisers get very little feedback on where they are getting their customers from, so they give this kind of reporting a lot of weight. It?s just that simple. To sum up: 1. Advertise on Progressive Talk if you have any way or excuse to do so, 2. Tell everyone you do business with in person or online to support Progressive Talk with their advertising dollars, and, 3. Tell every Progressive Talk advertiser you interact with that you are there because of their Progressive Talk ad campaign. Just like that, you can save a program, a station, a format and a nation. Thanks for your support! Tell Congress to pass a FISA bill that protects our national security and preserves our civil liberties! Tuesday is a critical day in our fight to stand up for American values and preserve our freedoms while protecting our national security. Tomorrow the Senate will vote on amendments to FISA, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the law governing the use of wiretaps and other means to conduct surveillance of foreign threats. Unfortunately, the new FISA bill we'll be voting on Tuesday still has many problems. I will do everything in my power -- including joining my colleague Chris Dodd in a filibuster against this legislation -- to fix it. Now I need your help to encourage more of our House and Senate colleagues to stand with us. Tell Congress that any new FISA bill must both protect our national security and preserve our civil liberties. Please email your home state Senators and Member of Congress now! I strongly support surveillance targeting foreign threats and terrorists who wish to do us harm -- but we must take care to protect Americans' liberties in the process. That's what the FISA amendments we passed through the Judiciary Committee would have done. Our Judiciary Committee amendments also would have given the existing FISA Court a more meaningful role in overseeing law enforcement's expanded surveillance activities, providing a crucial independent check on potential government excess. We must not forget that earlier abuses of power are the reason FISA was enacted in the first place. Unfortunately, the Bush-Cheney Administration and its allies oppose these safeguards. They are voting in lockstep to kill all of our efforts to improve the new FISA bill, basically telling Senate Democrats to "take it or leave it." Here's what they need to know: Passing legislation through the U.S. Senate isn't a "take it or leave it" enterprise. Not when they want to park Americans' civil liberties in a blind trust. They lost their credibility on "just trust us" long ago. Will you help convince Senators and Members of Congress to agree to our common-sense changes to improve this bill and protect the rights of all Americans? Tell Congress that any new FISA bill must both protect our national security and preserve our civil liberties. Please email your home state Senators and Member of Congress now! In addition, the Bush-Cheney Administration is trying to avoid any and all accountability for conducting illegal, warrantless surveillance for the past 5 years. They are insisting on granting blanket retroactive immunity to phone companies for their warrantless surveillance activities beginning in 2001, activities which explicitly violated existing FISA law and violated the privacy rights of Americans. Clearly, the Bush-Cheney Administration does not want their law-breaking to be exposed. Retroactive immunity would assure that they get their wish. When the public found out that the Bush-Cheney Administration was violating FISA and spying illegally on Americans without warrants, the Administration and phone companies were sued by citizens whose privacy rights were violated. These lawsuits may be the only way that the Bush-Cheney Administration is truly held accountable for its flagrant disrespect for the rule of law. Well, no one -- no citizen, no company, no Senator, and no President -- is above the law. By offering blanket immunity to telecom companies, the Administration is trying to avoid accountability -- and that is unacceptable. Tell Congress that any new FISA bill cannot grant blanket retroactive immunity to phone companies. Please email your home state Senators and Member of Congress now! I'm going to do everything I can to fix the FISA bill on Tuesday -- but I need your help to do it. Thank you for your support. Sincerely, Patrick Leahy U.S. Senator P.S. The first votes are just hours away. Please email your home state Senators and Member of Congress now -- so I can show my colleagues the strong support that exists for fixes to this FISA bill! I wanted to reach out to you and let you know how things look from where I stand.First, I think we'll have a nominee before the convention. It's still early, and there are plenty of voters who still haven't weighed in.I also think that we're fortunate to have two fantastic candidates that people are excited about -- we've consistently had record turnout across the country, and whoever wins will have the support of a healthy Party that's ready to fight. Hillary and Barack are meeting voters in places that don't typically get to see our candidates so closely, and that's good for both of them come November. They're both campaigning hard, and it's great to see such excitement for two great candidates -- I'm excited about them, too.But while our process continues to play out, we can't afford to sit around and wait. We must start right now -- we can't let John McCain get a head start. While the pundits on TV talk about what it all means, we can get to work. We know who we're up against - now we need the resources to compete. We know who we're up against -- now we need the resources to compete. He's loved by the media, but he'll be a disaster for our country. He's been a vocal supporter of George Bush's strategy in Iraq, and he's said that he wants to be there for another hundred years. He's committed to appointing judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade and privatizing Social Security. And he's admitted that he doesn't understand the economy, which would leave millions of Americans struggling to make ends meet. He's so bad that U.S. News and World Report recently revealed that the White House is thrilled to have John McCain picking up where they're leaving off... > What's behind President Bush's expansive praise for John McCain? "The Single Largest Invasion of Privacy in American History." Tell the House: Stand Up for the Rule of Law The House of Representatives still has a chance to stop retroactive immunity in conference -- but only if House leadership stands tall for their version of wiretapping reform legislation. Dear John, Yesterday the Senate rejected the amendment offered by Senators Dodd and Feingold to strip retroactive immunity from the Intelligence Committee's wiretapping reform bill. It went on to pass the Intelligence Committee's bill by a wide margin. As a progressive organization that lives inside of a very good mobile phone company this fight was personal. We know that a telecom company should never, ever help the White House wiretap Americans without a warrant. And AT and Verizon should know that, too. Together we've fought long and hard against retroactive immunity for the telecom companies that helped Bush spy illegally on Americans. Hundreds of thousands of citizens like you stood up and told their Senators that we expect them to defend the rule of law. Sadly, it seemed that the deck was always stacked against us in the Senate. But the fight isn't over yet. Last fall, the House passed the RESTORE Act, a FISA reform bill that included solid oversight of domestic surveillance and did not contain retroactive immunity. Now, because the House bill is so different from the legislation that the Senate just passed, there will be a conference between leaders of the House and the Senate to decide what legislation both bodies will put forward for the President to sign. We need Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer to stand tall and ensure that the conference committee reports legislation that doesn't include retroactive immunity. Take action and tell Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer to stand up for the rule of law. During this fight we saw what can happen when hundreds of thousands of Americans come together to work with Senators like Chris Dodd and Russ Feingold, advocacy organizations, liberal bloggers, and, yes, a phone company that wants to ensure that the laws governing privacy and civil liberties are always followed. Three out of the four committees in Congress that have worked on this FISA legislation have rejected retroactive immunity. Please join in one last time and ask the House leadership to stand by their good work and report a bill that doesn't include retroactive immunity. Click here to tell the House leadership -- stand firm, no retroactive immunity for lawbreakers. Thank you for being an inspiration to me throughout this fight. Please watch 60 Minutes this Sunday, feb 24th, to see the important piece on former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman. (If you're going to watch the Academy Awards, then please record the 60 Minutes show so you can see it later.) And pass this on to everyone! Thumbnail sketch: Siegelman is pretty much a political prisoner...both Dems and Repubs question the charges & trial...the judge won't release transcripts of his trial, so he can't appeal (the trial was at least a year ago)...he's being moved from place to place to make it difficult to contact him...this 60 Minutes piece has been sitting on the shelf due to White House pressure , and now that it's airing, it's being broadcast at the same time as the Academy Awards. This story involves election fraud, Karl Rove, the Federal U.S. Attorney scandal and so on. Congressman Conyers' House Judiciary Committee is investigating the case; the story has been covered on www.Bradblog.com and Peter B. Collins talk show (he interviewed Siegelman's daughter a few weeks ago), and extensively by Larisa Alexandrovna on www.Rawstory.com (she's also talked about the case on Peter's show). Check Alexandrovna"s series: http://rawstory.com/larisa_alexandrovna.php The 60 minutes website is: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/1998/07/08/60minutes/main13502.shtml Once you know the story, let Conyers know you support the investigation.
