Dear John,The Democratic Party has never been healthier. Just look at the
vigorous presidential primary we've got on our hands. Right now, every one
of the Democratic campaigns is working around the clock to become our
nominee, and any of them would be a great choice.

But when the dust settles and people like you pick our nominee, the real
challenge will begin. This time, though, it won't be a debate of ideas with
fellow Democrats. It will be against a Republican machine eager to redeem
its losses in 2006, fighting to extend George Bush's policies for another
four years.

We've all seen the way they run campaigns, so we have to be unified and
ready. We know that the Republicans are going to come at us with every scam
they think up to suppress the vote.

In the past, they've abused robocalls that hide their true identity, jammed
the phones Democrats used for getting out the vote, and purged voters from
the voter rolls. We need to be united in order to stop them.

Stand up and show our candidates, our opponents, and the country just how
strong the Democratic Party is by joining me in a pledge to support the
Democratic candidate for President in 2008 - no matter who wins. When we
have a nominee, they'll know that thousands of Democrats from across the
country are united - even if they may not have supported them in the
primary.

Every one of the Republican front-runners - Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, Mike
Huckabee and John McCain - would continue President Bush's failed policies.
America can't take a third Bush term, but that is all the Republicans offer.

They believe that President Bush's war in Iraq is a success. We believe that
it's time to bring our troops home.

They support President Bush's pardon of White House Aide Scooter Libby. We
believe in widespread ethics reform legislation to clean up the mess in
Washington.

They agree with President Bush's veto of children's health insurance
funding. We believe that no parent should have to worry about whether or not
they can afford to take their children to a doctor.

No matter who you plan to vote for in the primary, there's one simple fact
we can all agree on: Any one of our candidates will be better than four more
years of failed Republican policies.

Pledge your support for the Democratic nominee in 2008, and then ask your
friends to do the same. Everyone - from the nominee to the media to the
Republicans - should know just how many people are behind our candidate this
year.

GOVERNOR'S 2008 - 09 BUDGET PROPOSAL
 
SACRAMENTO ? Lt. Governor John Garamendi had the following comments today on
the proposed budget:
 
?The budget proposed today fails a very simple test: it does not meet the
needs of California.
 
?Thirty years ago, I began my career in public service hopeful that our
state could do more to improve the lot of California?s families. Sadly, the
budget debate today is about how our people can get by with less ? less
education, less healthcare, and fewer opportunities for the future.
 
?California is at a crossroads.  We know we can no longer paper over the
fiscal challenges that confront state and local governments, but neither can
we abandon our moral responsibility to protect the most vulnerable, or
compromise the historic promise of our Golden State.
 
?There is no question that our state?s chronic structural imbalance calls us
to carefully examine our budgeting priorities, remembering that the success
of the Golden State over the past half century was based on a robust,
entrepreneurial private sector matched by state investments that propelled
us into the 21st century.
 
?We built the foundation for innovation and achievement with the world?s
best education systems that trained our workforce and researchers, a highway
system unparalleled in its effectiveness at moving goods to market and
people to work, and a water system that gave life to the California economy
as we know it today.
 
?This budget will undoubtedly test our resolve ? but when tested, California
has always emerged stronger. Remember, in the middle of the Great
Depression, California overcame political and financial obstacles to build
the Golden Gate Bridge ? the enduring symbol of California?s spectacular
record of innovation and achievement.
 
?Over the next six months, we face a critical decision -- whether to
continue to invest in our future or abandon the historical commitment that
made the Golden State.
 
?With a powerful and diverse economy, a capable and motivated workforce, and
extraordinary entrepreneurs, educators, and research facilities, we stand on
a strong foundation.  I know that working together we can once again meet

is chaired by Jim Provenza. Carl Schmid and Jim Provenza were the driving
forces that brought the club to this point in the by-laws process and
without their leadership, the by-laws would have failed to been updated and
changed for a third time in 4 years.

    As for the rest of the program: There will be a panel of 2 to 3
economists to educate the membership about the sub-prime crisis that has
property values falling, interests rates destabalized and the dollar falling
in value. This should be a very informative and educational meeting. Planned
featured speakers are an economy professor from Cal State University
Sacramento, a state economy lobbyist, and the California State Controller.

    The suggested donation at the door is $5.

    This is a potluck event. Please come break bread with us and share
pleasant conversation and food with fellow Democrats. Please bring enough of
your favorie food to share with 4 to 6 people. If you do not know what to
bring, the following is the suggested alphabet breakdown by Last Name:

title of his talk and a synopsis of the talk.

The speaker is  Dr Ta-chen Wang who received his Ph D in economics 
from Stanford University.  He is on the faculty on CSUS in the 
economics department and teaches and studies monetary policy as well 
as other subjects.

His title will be:

The current mortgage crisis: how did it happen and what if anything can be done

Dr Wang  will give a background to the current credit and financial 
crises that is centered around the mortgage industry and has spread 
throughout international financial markets.  He will provide a 
description of  of the crises and what are some possible future 
dangers, what were the causes and why banking regulations failed to 
avert this crisis and finally will open up with some questions as to 
what could possibly be done in the future.  There are two questions 
that I hope he will be able to bring up.  One is what can or even 
should to bring relief to consumers that are facing foreclosure and 
the second what are some of the kinds of banking and monetary

    The M in the filename is after Max Mikalonis, an ex-officio member of
the DDC Board of Directors. Other people that were instramental in bringing
you these by-laws were Betty Weir, Bob Bockwinkel, Carl Schmid, Mike
Syvanen, Claire Black Slotton, and G Richard Yamagata. The By-Laws Committee
is chaired by Jim Provenza. Carl Schmid and Jim Provenza were the driving
forces that brought the club to this point in the by-laws process.  Without
their leadership, the by-laws would have failed to be updated.  We have
tried to do this (update the by-laws) twice before in the last 4 years.

    As for the rest of the program: This is from Mike Syvanen, Vice
President of Davis Democratic Club concerning the speaker's biography, the
title of his talk and a synopsis of the talk.

The speaker is  Dr Ta-chen Wang who received his PhD in economics 
from Stanford University.  He is on the faculty on CSUS in the 
economics department and teaches and studies monetary policy as well 
as other subjects.

His title will be:

The current mortgage crisis: how did it happen and what if anything can be done

Dr Wang  will give a background to the current credit and financial 
crises that is centered around the mortgage industry and has spread 
throughout international financial markets.  He will provide a 
description of  of the crises and what are some possible future 
dangers, what were the causes and why banking regulations failed to 
avert this crisis and finally will open up with some questions as to 
what could possibly be done in the future.  There are two questions 
that I hope he will be able to bring up.  One is what can or even 
should to bring relief to consumers that are facing foreclosure and 
the second what are some of the kinds of banking and monetary 
regulations that can be considered to prevent this from happening 
again in the future.  Basically, we can consider what we should be 
doing as activist to bring this up as campaign issues for 2008."
