AB 1148, the California DISCLOSE Act, will have its critical vote in the
Assembly Appropriations Committee this Thursday (January 19th).  This is a
do-or-die vote in our efforts to stop anonymous special interests from
deceiving voters about who is paying for political ads.

Please sign the online petition for AB 1148 now, even if you've signed it
before.  When you do, it will send an email with the petition and your
comments from you to Speaker John Pérez, all of the Appropriations Committee
members, and your own Assemblymember.  That way they'll directly see how
strongly everybody wants to require political ads to show who really pays
for them:

With AB 1148, there will be no more fine print for disclosures and no more
hiding behind fake names like "California Jobs Initiative".  AB 1148 will
require political ads to show their three largest funders on a full screen
in large white print on a black background, with their logos.

Not only will the California DISCLOSE Act apply to ads for and against
ballot measures, but it will also apply to independent expenditures for and
against candidates.  It will tell voters who is really funding propositions
and attack ads when it counts!

Then please watch out for a follow-up email during business hours asking
you to make a quick phone call to demand that the Assembly pass AB 1148.
We're going to need hundreds of calls and emails if we're going to get the
California DISCLOSE Act to pass!
.
Of course, there's no need to wait if you can call during the day:  You can
see the names and numbers of all the Appropriations Committee members on our
website - starting with Assembly Appropriations Chair Felipe Fuente:

Thanks again for taking these two crucial actions to help pass AB 1148 - and
start to fight directly back against the unlimited anonymous spending
unleashed by Citizens United.

Join us in Sacramento for the Assembly Appropriations Committee Hearing for
AB 1148, the California DISCLOSE ACT!

AB 1148 passed the Assembly Elections Committee on January 9th thanks in
large part to over 100 people from all around the state who showed up to
testify.  Now the California DISCLOSE Act faces it's biggest test so far --
the all-important Assembly Appropriations Committee vote on Thursday,
January 19th.

Join us to pack the Assembly Appropations Committee hearing room to show the
legislature how much regular people like you are demanding an end to
anonymous ads that deceive voters about who's really paying for them.

The hearing will be in room 4202 of the Capitol building, but the time isn't
certain because it meets after the Assembly floor session starts.  We'll
plan to meet outside committee room 4202 at 10am to describe what to do what
to do.  Everybody who comes should have a chance to line up and say they
support the bill ‹ and the longer that line, the better its chances!

THIS IS OUR LAST CHANCE TO SHOW MAJOR SUPPORT IN PERSON IN THE ASSEMBLY ‹
EVERYTHING MAY RIDE ON HOW MANY PEOPLE LIKE YOU COME TO SPEAK.  The
committee has seventeen members, almost a quarter of the Assembly, and we
need to bring the huge amount of support for the California DISCLOSE Act to
their direct attention.

We'll also, time permitting, be breaking into groups with experienced
California DISCLOSE Act speakers to lobby key Assemblymembers and their
staff.

PLEASE REGISTER!  THERE IS A CHANCE THAT PLANS FOR THE HEARING CAN CHANGE,
SO WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO KEEP YOU UPDATED ABOUT ANY CHANGES AND
INSTRUCTIONS.

We'll be working to arrange carpools from most parts of the state.

Join us to show the legislature how much regular people like you want them
to pass AB 1148 so that political ads have to show who really is paying for
them!
