From yamagata at virtual-markets.net Mon Jul 15 16:37:40 2019 From: yamagata at virtual-markets.net (G Richard Yamagata PhD) Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2019 16:37:40 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Davis Democrats] John Pamperin Message-ID: <201907152337.x6FNbdRm040464@mail.afes.com> This e-mail is being sent to the most politically active people in Yolo County. This is a community announcement that is not a Davis Democratic Club official matter. That is why this announcement is being sent first to this list, not the official DDC announcement list. I regret to inform you that John Pamperin died on Saturday, July 13 at 2PM in the afternoon. This was completely unexpected. Previous to his death, there was a planned party to be held for John on Sunday, July 14. He passed away the day before this event. The event was transformed into a celebration of life for John Pamperin. John's wife, daughter and nephews from the US east coast were present with a total number between 50 to 60 people. Various members of the community, county and the region got up from the audience and shared their memories and celebrated his life. John was the street chaplain for City of Davis, was on the human relations commission for the City of Davis and worked with the Davis Police department. He would help and counsel all those that were in need, including the homeless, people with addiction problems, and students that were trying to deal with life away from home. He was part of the Free Speach movement during the 1960s, that protested the war in Viet nam and other social issues of the time and some of this activity took place in Davis and Sacramento. He arranged, contacted and coordinated various clergy from multiple denominations across the US, from California to New York, to travel to Selma to take part in the historic civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery. This all occurred after "Bloody Sunday." Many of the contacted clergy travelled and was participating in the march, the second time they crossed onto the Edmund Pettus Bridge. At the bottom of the bridge, state and local law enforment were waiting for them, once again and it was expected that there would be a repeat of the events of "Bloody Sunday." Martin Luther King Jr halted the marchers at the top of the bridge, had the marchers all kneel in prayer and then he turned them around and they marched back into town. John said that he arrived the following day and was with the group when they marched across on the third attempt, which did not have the "army" of state and local law enforcement to turn them back. By this time, with all of the clergy from across the country and famous celebrities in the crowd, they were able to peacefully continue the march. This led to their arrival in Nontgomery, where King gave his "how long, not long" speech. John Pamperin was part of history. John was always willing to help people in need. He will be deeply missed.
