A number of expenses must be paid in March, so we need to be able to make these payments. The April installment will be the final payment for New Orleans, and will be individualized to reflect money already in your student's account. An information package on the trip is coming soon. The Festival is at the Monterey Conference Center (1 Portola Plaza), which is adjacent to the Portola Hotel (2 Portola Plaza)--where the students will be staying. We leave right after school on Friday, April 4. Mr. Lange is ready to leave as soon as Jazz Band is over, so if you want to leave earlier then please make the arrangements with your student. If your student needs a ride contact Nancy Hatamiya at nhatamiya at comcast.net. If you can drive a carpool please let Nancy know how many students you can take--and be sure to fill out the driver form (with copy of auto insurance).' See the attached schedule for Friday evening concerts. There is a kick-off concert at 7:00 PM with "MJF County" at 7:15, Judges Concert with Christian McBride at 8:30 and Berklee Latin Jazz at 10:00. The web site: http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/NGF/index.htm says concerts are free and I've not seen any notice of ticket costs except for the Thursday Christian McBride concert: http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/cmbsituation/ So--assume concerts are free, but come prepared with cash or plastic just in case! We warm up at 2:30 Saturday in the DeAnza Ballroom and perform at 3:00 PM in the Serra Ballroom of the conference center: http://www.montereyconferencecenter.com/meetingspace.html Announcement of Big Band finalists is at 6:15 in the Serra Ballroom, with 7:30 warm-ups, 8:00 competition, 9:45 final awards and 10:00 student jam sessions and vocal jazz concert (see attached for other events, clinics and scholarship auditions throughout Saturday and Sunday). In the attached, please see guidelines for participating high school ensembles, point #3 for equipment provided (or not provided) by the Festival. Chaperones for this trip are: Kate Scow Carina Moore Rob Merges & Jo Andrews Stephanie DeGraff-Hunt and David Hunt A schedule of student "check-in" times, additional details, etc. will be distributed before the trip. The Festival provided us with five discount coupons for the Monterey Aquarium: $22.95 adults, $20.95 students. Each coupon is good for "the entire visiting group," so we can make this stretch by having whoever's interested show up at the same time. These coupons are available on a first-come, first-served basis by emailing me: matlockpeter at yahoo.com. Student room-mates are in the attached Word document. That is, do you enjoy Jamba Juice? Peet's? Starbuck's? How about taking the family to dinner at Dos Coyotes or Applebee's or Chili's or Chevy's? Or lunch at Chipotle or Subway or KFC or Carl's Jr or Burger King? The weather's getting warmer, so maybe ice cream at Baskin Robbins or Cold Stone? The weather may also mean more bike riding, but most of us still have to buy gas sometime. Shell? Arco? Chevron/Texaco? And of course groceries and sundry items at Safeway, Nugget, Co-op, SaveMart, Longs, or Rite Aid. All of these places are part of our scrip program, as well as many more. Clothes shopping? There's Gottschalks, Gap/Old Navy, Marshalls, Lands' End, L.L. Bean, JC Penney, or Ross. Home and garden projects? Try Ace Hardware, Home Depot, or Sears/OSH. Entertainment? Try Blockbuster, iTunes, Regal Cinemas, Borders, Avid Reader, or Disney. Electronics? Try Circuit City, Best Buy, or Radio Shack. Sports? Try Big 5. Almost anything under the sun? Amazon.com, of course. Order your scrip using the attached form and the Band Boosters will get a cut ranging from 2-15%. Not bad at all for just doing what you usually do. Thanks! I have spent quite a bit of time over the past few weeks working with the music teachers in Davis on the District's budget problem -- many nights until 1 am and too many emails to count! The music teachers support the need to fundraise and the DSF's efforts to bridge the budget gap. As part of this effort, someone needs to speak at as many upcoming concerts as possible regarding the budget situation and seek donations. Mr. Lange asked me to do this at next week's band concert. If you or another Band Booster would prefer to make the pitch for fundraising just as the concert begins, let me know and we can go through what and how it needs to be said. If not, I will gladly accept Mr. Lange's request and talk to the audience for just a couple of minutes. My thought is I will also be at a table in the foyer before the concert begins (until I have to speak), during intermission and afterwards with "Save Music" kind of signs and pens for people to write checks. However, I need at least 1 other parent -- preferably 2 more -- to help me at the table. We need to hand out fliers, explain the budget situation, how music will be affected and answer questions about the funds. We'll accept checks for DSF and music specifically. Do you know a couple of persuasive parents who could help me at the table? If you want to talk over the weekend, my cell phone is 574-0335. There is a lot of information to convey, and things are moving pretty fast due to the budget deadlines and pink slips. Call me if you have a few minutes and I can fill you in if you would like. Then become part of the solution. 1. Donate Money to Save the Music Program If you were at either the Ajudication Concert or the Jazz Band/Jazz Choir Concert last week, you heard the appeal to donate money to saving the elementary music program. If $100 were donated for every student in the music program, then the elementary program could be completely saved! As a parent, think about the costs of tutors, instruments, trips, camps, and you'll find that $100 is a bargain. In fact, you will probably realize that having a band program is worth more to you than this. So be generous, and give what you can. The music teachers and booster groups are asking for your support through the Davis Schools Orchestral Music Association. You can reach the DSOMA web site at: http://groups.dcn.org/dhs-orchestras or simply return the form below with your donation, which will be directed to saving the elementary music program. Don't delay, the district must make final decisions on rehiring teachers on May 15th. The earlier your donation is recorded, the earlier our four "pink-slipped" music teachers can be assured they will have a position next year. 2. Donate Money to Restore All Cut Programs. Please support the fundraising of the Davis Schools Foundation to restore the programs cut by the district due to the current deficit. Our students need more than music. The DSF website is at http://www.davisschoolsfoundation.org/ See their pyramid for restoring programs as they raise funds for the district. 3. Enjoy a Fundraising Concert Invite a friend or two to join you to come and see what the amazing Davis Public School orchestral music program has accomplished this year. Led by the phenomenal directors Angelo Moreno, Greg Brucker and Kim Cole, 5 orchestras with musicians ages 10 - 18, will perform for the community. The Concerto Competition winner, 16 yr old Angela Yeung, will perform Beethoven's Concerto No. 3 in C Minor. Whether you are a community member, budding musician, or a supporter of the arts from across the country, this festival will prove the value of music in our schools. The Wennberg Festival (12th Annual) will take place Saturday, April 12, at 2:30pm at The UC Davis Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets available, $8-16.00, at the box office, www.mondaviarts.org or by calling: 866-754-2787. More information at: http://www.mondaviarts.org/events/event.cfm?event_id=554 Proceeds will be used for restoring the elementary music program, as well as district-wide orchestral support. As a fan or parent of a high school musician, you know the power of making music can transform the lives of young people. Let's give this opportunity to a new generation of Davis students. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please return this form and your donation to Davis Schools Orchestral Music Association - Save Our Music (or abbreviated to "DSOMA-SOM"), P.O. We were so touched by the dedication to Will's memory and it was a great comfort for us in this tragic time. I have been thinking how I might respond to the offers of help and I came up with an idea the students might want to help with. We will be putting together some photo collages on Wednesday afternoon and I would like to invite any band member to come over and help. We have boxes and boxes of photos (we never seemed organized enough to put our pictures into albums in the pre-digital age). I also know that some parents expressed an interest in providing dinner. We are ok on that front until March 29th, the Saturday of the visitation and the open house. For those planning on attending it would be great if they brought some small finger food or beverages to share. If a band parent wanted to organize a dinner schedule beginning March 31st we would be very grateful. There has been quite a bit of support for locating an alternate place to rehearse on Monday and Wednesday nights to prepare for Monterey. Here is what I know and what we might be able to do... 1) both the choir and band rooms will be busy with auditions after school and in the evenings all week long. 2) I KNOW the theater is busy on Wednesday night with All-City Elementary Band concert. 3) I think stage is probably busy on Monday night (with dance auditions for Jazz Choir) 4) Mr. Moreno is trying to set up a meeting to discuss the music cuts and remedies and will probably try for the MPR. 5) I would VERY MUCH like to rehearse - ANYWHERE! On Monday morning I will try to get the MPR for Monday and Wednesday evenings. I don't know if it is being used for adult school or whatever. I think we should also try for one of the Jr Highs. If we try for Holmes, Emerson or Harper we will need entrance to the room and hopefully use of a drum set and piano. Harper would be the easiest - closest for drop off of equipment, parking, and Mr. Bower lives nearby. (Both Mr Quick and Mr D live out of town). Actually the DHS MPR would be the most difficult - moving equip across campus, no piano, no stands, etc. I would appreciate any help you could give at this point contacting the Jr High teachers or equipment moving or set-up. Unfortunately, today in Band Mr. Lange asked who would need a ride, and eight additional students said they'd need one. Nancy is now scrambling to find additional drivers. Unfortunately, this is not a new pattern. On prior trips this year we've looked to be in good shape, and then at the very last minute (literally, the last one or two days) a whole host of students appeared who needed rides. Thanks to the flexibility and generosity of numerous parents these last-minute requests could be met. We've got to stop meeting like this. Please--if you need a ride this weekend to Monterey then contact Nancy Hatamiya IMMEDIATELY (specify which ways you need a ride). If you have space in your car then please contact Nancy IMMEDIATELY with your travel plans (when are you going, when will you return), number of available seats, etc. Nancy's email: Nancy Hatamiya WAIT!!!! We're not done. New Orleans is next week. ALL Jazz Band students must be at the Sacramento Airport at 5:00 PM (yes--that's 5 Stupid O'clock in the morning) on Thursday, April 10. We won't be waiting for anyone, we won't be callling to wake anyone up and we won't be driving back to Davis to pick up stragglers. I've asked for a carpool coordinator, and no-one has stepped up. This one will be simple. If there's no volunteer to coordinate carpools--to the airport on Thursday and at 10:40 PM Sunday when we return--then there will be no carpools and everyone will have to get their student to the airport on time. If you can't get your student to the airport or pick them up at these times then please volunteer to organize carpool drivers. Let me know by Wednesday, April 2 so you'll have time to put out your notices. Otherwise, everyone is individually responsible. Thanks! There are no excused absences from classes unless you individually decide to excuse your student. Transportation has been addressed in other emails. Concerts Friday night are listed at: http://www.montereyjazzfestival.org/NGF/schedule08.htm Mr. Lange expects students to attend the 8:30 Christian McBride (Golden State Theater) and 10:00 Berklee Latin Jazz (Monterey Live Jazz Club) concerts. To my knowledge these are free events. Mr. Lange cautions that seating is limited at these concerts, and students are recommended to arrive at 6:45 at the Golden State Theater to be sure we have seats for Christian McBride (there is a 7:15 warm-up concert). Given driving times from Davis, this means pretty much arriving in Monterey and going straight to the venues--plan food accordingly. Hotel: I will be checking us in, obtaining room keys and distributing them to chaperones so they can get keys to each student. Specifics on these logistics will come after they're worked out with the chaperones. Lights out: Midnight. Chaperones will check each room. SATURDAY: Mr. Lange expects students to attend as many concerts and clinics as possible. High School Band competitions begin at 9:00 AM in the Serra Ballroom. Be sure the students are there to listen! Lesli Chuck investigated options for the group to get together at some point and suggests the following for those who would like to do so: For lunch on Saturday, meet on the wharf at 11:30 to beat the lunch crowd. We can split into smaller groups, as no place can accommodate our large group. Take your pick of restaurants... http://www.montereywharf.com/dining.htm Note that students will have to check out of the hotel in the morning, and will either need to make arrangements with parents for their stuff or carry it with them through the day. Clinics are at 11:00 (Berklee Latin Jazz) and 2:00 (Christian McBride). Mr. Lange wants students to attend the Christian McBride clinic for sure, even though they will have to leave early to be at the 2:30 PM warm-up in the DeAnza Ballroom. DHS Jazz Band performs at 3:00 PM in the Serra Ballroom. There are special performances in the Serra Ballroom at 5:00 PM, with Big Band awards at 6:15 PM.
