      Dear Jazz Band Parents,

Our trip to the Reno Jazz Festival is this coming Friday and Saturday, April 24 - 25. The schedule is below, and the permission slip is attached.

We have a few last-minute details on the budget, so you can expect the budget information in the next day or so. The expected cost per student is approximately $80, including Festival admission and hotel.

Please provide your student with additional money for dinners on Friday and Saturday, as well as breakfast and lunch on Saturday. Meals will be at the hotel casino (not extravagant but also not cheap), downtown Reno or at the University of Nevada (reasonable). Packing a lunch for Friday is a good idea, or you can provide extra money to buy lunch in Reno that day.

Please turn in the permission slip and a check made out to DHS Band Boosters (with the amount that will be given to you shortly) before the start of the trip.

Carpool and chaperone information will also be provided shortly.

For those who have not attended this Festival in the past, consider coming. There will be two days of excellent performances by leading high school and college bands and combos, in addition to Friday's evening concert. The competition schedule is at: http://www.unr.edu/rjf/pdfs/RJF%20Competition%20Schedule.pdf

Note that I still have a single one-day pass for Friday (including the evening concert) available for the advanced-purchase group rate of $15. Contact me at matlockpeter at yahoo.com if you are interested.

      Best regards, Peter

      Reno Trip Itinerary

      Friday, April 24

9:15 AM Band meets in Band Room; carpools join with drivers

9:45 AM Absolute latest departure time

12:30 PM Arrive at Silver Legacy, Reno. Early check-in for 2 – 3 rooms may be possible, but cannot be confirmed until April 23. Assemble at check-in lobby at Silver Legacy; form groups for lunch

1:30 PM MEET YOUR CHAPERONES (check-in lobby of Silver Legacy). Change in the 2 – 3 rooms we hope are available for early check-in. If these aren’t available, then change in hotel bathrooms.

1:45 PM Start walk to University of Nevada, Reno Festival, with instruments and full performance uniform

3:15 PM Warm-up at (room to be specified)

3:45 PM Perform at Joe Crowley Student Union, Ballroom A

4:15 PM Feedback from judges (room to be specified)

5:15 PM Return to Silver Legacy as a group. MEET YOUR CHAPERONES at check-in lobby of Silver Legacy. Get room keys. Chaperones and students to exchange cell phone numbers. Change into casual clothes for dinner and evening concert. A CHAPERONE MUST GO WITH THEIR STUDENT GROUP FOR DINNER (remember, Nevada law limits casino floor access).

6:30 PM Start return walk to University Nevada, Reno for 7:30 PM evening concert at Lawlor Events Center. Note that seating for this concert fills up quickly, so we should be there no later than 7:00 PM

7:30 PM Evening concert: Jerry Gonzalez and The Fort Apache Band

After Concert Reconvene with chaperones on the walkway in front of Lawlor to return to Silver Legacy. STUDENTS MUST RETURN TO THEIR ROOMS WITH CHAPERONES; STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE CASINO FLOOR WITHOUT AN ADULT.

Once in rooms: Lights out—11:30 PM at the latest. CHAPERONE CHECK-IN AT EACH STUDENT ROOM. Students are not to leave rooms after this without a chaperone. We are in a Casino regulated by Nevada state law. ANY infraction means chaperones WILL adjust sleeping arrangements so there is an adult in every room (translation--students are NOT to do anything that will result in a group of grumpy students and chaperones!).

      Saturday, April 24:

Note that the Festival begins at 8:00 AM. Any students wishing to begin hearing groups at 8:00 can hook up with a chaperone to be at UNR by this time

8:00 AM Breakfast with chaperones in Casino restaurants or downtown Reno (work this out with your chaperone)

9:00 AM MEET YOUR CHAPERONES in Silver Legacy check-in lobby. Walk to UNR

9:30 – Noon Listen to performances, attend clinics. See clinic schedule: http://www.unr.edu/rjf/pdfs/RJF%20Clinic-Concert%20Schedule.pdf

Noon MEET YOUR CHAPERONES at designated location of your choosing. Lunch

2:50 PM Combo performs at Church Fine Arts Building (CFA), Room 14

5:00 PM Competition ends. Meet with carpool drivers to return to Davis, unless DHS is called back for evening concert

6:30 PM Festival showcase and awards ceremony (optional—depending on carpool driver and whether we are called back). Lawlor Center.
