      Dear DHS Jazz Parents,
Please mark your calendars and come to the Capital Jazz Project/DHS Jazz Band concert on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Brunelle Performing Arts Theater (IPAB). Bring your family and friends—if we do not have a large attendance then this concert series may not continue in the future.

Our jazz students obtain significant benefit from working with the CJP. This is one of the few opportunities for our Jazz Band to play as a group with jazz professionals, not only on stage but in a separate evening clinic. This year, the clinic is timed to prepare for the Reno Jazz Festival. We want to continue this relationship with the CJP for our future students.

However, attendance at last year’s concert was embarrassingly low. CJP’s dedication to education is apparent by their willingness to do the concert with the DHS Jazz Band again this year.

For those who are not aware—our agreement with the CJP is that they waive their usual fee in exchange for receiving net proceeds from this concert. We are all incredibly grateful for CJP’s good will in returning this year after receiving disconcertingly small proceeds last year, but we can’t rely on their good citizenship year after year. Musicians need to eat too!

Note that not one member of CJP has complained, but I personally want to see the CJP return annually in future years and implore you to help make this happen. Economic times may be tough, but with budget cuts again looming this is an easy and enjoyable way to show your support for high-quality music in our schools.

Come to the concert. Bring your children, extended family and friends. Bring lots of them!

Prices have been reduced this year to make it a more family-friendly event. The music of Hank Jones—a true Jazz Great of mainstream jazz—will be featured. It will be a terrific evening.

Plus—we must have more volunteers. Katherine Miller will be working on ticket sales, but needs help. We need lots and lots more publicity. Leslie McDaniel is investigating selling refreshments.

Please let Mike Choy or me know how you can help with this concert:

      See you at the concert!

      Best regards,
      Peter
