Subject: Delta Jazz Festival: Stockton, CA, Saturday, December 5, 2009

      Dear Jazz Band Parents,

Below please find information regarding the Delta Jazz Festival on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Delta College in Stockton, CA.

Attached is the necessary permission slip (the “yellow form”) that ALL students must turn in to Mr. Lange to attend. The “pink form” must be completed by every parent driving a carpool, along with a copy of current automobile insurance. Carpool forms are to be given to Christine Robbins on the morning of the Festival.

Christine Robbins is organizing carpools for this event.

If your student needs a ride to the Festival (and/or back) then please respond to Christine by 9:00 PM, Wednesday, November 25. Email Christine at: crobbins at stfrancishs.org

Please help Christine arrange all rides in advance. We cannot find rides for your student at the last minute, so please do not drop them off on the morning of the Festival expecting that an empty car seat will magically appear. It’s a long walk!

The first combo will perform at 8:25 AM in the Studio Theater (Locke 326) and will leave Davis at 6:40 AM. The second combo will perform at 9:15 AM (same location) and will leave Davis at 7:15 AM. The rest of the Band will also leave at 7:15 AM, and the Jazz Band performs at 10:30 AM (Atherton Theater). Everyone except the first combo will assemble by 7:00 AM at the Band Room.

Once the Jazz Band performance and clinic are complete (11:30 AM), students are free to return to Davis, as the evening awards ceremony is optional. There is also an evening concert by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band; tickets are $25 and $30:

Students will receive a wrist band for entry to school group performances, a noon concert and the clinics (which are said to be held throughout the day in the North and South Hall). Parents and chaperones need to buy an admission pass at the box office ($10).

San Joaquin Delta College is in the north part of Stockton--count on just over one hour for the drive (longer if there's fog). Directions: South on I-5, exit at March Lane, drive east on March Lane, turn left on Pacific Avenue and drive north to the entrance at Yokuts Ave. Take a left onto Yokuts, then turn left (south) on Frontage Road; Parking Lot L4 will soon by on your right. See this link for directions:

Parking has been free on weekends in the past (but please confirm on-site!) and Parking Lot L4 is convenient—simply walk north to Atherton Auditorium:

For those who will be staying to hear more bands (schedule attached) and/or attend evening activities, below is additional Information on Stockton:

      1. You can revive yourself with caffeine and overly-sugared snacks on the way to Delta College at a place with a wince-inducing name yet passable coffee—Toot Sweets: left on Quail Lakes Drive shortly after turning east on March Lane. Or, head south on Pacific Avenue to the “Miracle Mile” to Empresso (in the Empire Theater)—where each cappuccino comes with artwork in the froth: http://www.stocktonmiraclemile.com/empressocoffee/index.htm

      2. Heading south on Pacific Avenue will also bring you to UOP, with the Brubeck Institute. Nice place to walk around.

      3. The Haggin Museum combines Ag History, Pioneer History and Egyptian artifacts (who knew?): http://www.hagginmuseum.org/

      4. For the ride back, Giusti's in Walnut Grove (north and west of Stockton) provides a classic delta experience (bring your farmer hat to nail to the ceiling), better food than you’d expect, and possibly the only place in California with worse water than Davis: http://www.giustis.com/

      Best regards,
      Peter Matlock
