The Concert Band, directed by Pete Nowlen, will play two pieces about famous bridges, including sections from Michael Daugherty's multi-movement concerto "Brooklyn Bridge," written in 2005 for symphonic band and clarinet soloist. This performance will feature clarinetist Deborah Pittman, a longtime faculty member at Sacramento State. Pittman will doubtless bring some personal perspective to the piece, since she was born in Brooklyn. Also on the program will be mid-20th century American composer William Schuman's "George Washington Bridge" (1950), early band master John Philip Sousa's "Pathfinder of Panama" (1915), contemporary American composer John Fannin's angular three-minute piece "The Hexagon" (2010), Frank Ticheli's combustive "Nitro" (an "energy-charged three minute fanfare" from 2006), and a band setting of "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre (a piece that's been heard several times during the past few years at the Mondavi Center in its original choral version). The Campus Band, directed by Tom Slabaugh, will perform "Chaos Theory," written in 2010 by composer J. Eric Schmidt, who teaches in the USC Film Scoring Program in Los Angeles, and "Cathedrals" by Katryn Salfelder, a piece written in 2007 that the composer describes as "a fantasy (based) on Gabrieli's Canzon Primi Toni from the Sacrae Symphoniae, which dates from 1597." The concert also will feature historic photos from the 1920s taken by the late Paul W. Hollingshead, the father of Bill Hollingshead, a Concert Band member and UCD graduate. Tickets are $12 general, $8 students and children, available at the door or in advance at http://www.mondaviarts.org or (530) 754-2787. - Reach Jeff Hudson at jhudson at davisenterprise.net or (530) 747-8055. In planning ahead, I need to know if you will require overnight bus parking at our event. As in the past, we have a lot reserved near the entrance of Municipal Wharf II for busses and/or large passenger vans. This lot is a few blocks east of the Monterey Conference Center. The bus lot is at the right corner of Figueroa and Del Monte Avenue just before the start of the Municipal Wharf. Of course, band members and equipment can be dropped off at the front of the Conference Center, so there is no need to walk with large groups of students. Please let me know via email if you will need to park your bus in this lot. *For smaller vehicles (under 6?8?), I would recommend using the Monterey Public Lot or ?East Garage? located on Del Monte and Washington Streets, a stone?s throw from the Conference Center. The cost for this lot is $7.00 per day as opposed to $10 in the West Garage and $13 at the Portola Hotel (for a parking garage map, go to the City of Monterey Parking website). * As always, more NGJF info to follow. In an attempt not to be too confusing(!), I'll indicate what I already know and make a ?? list for what I don't... Here's what I'm counting on, then: Hochman/Wolfe Family - 2 students in addition to Noah, both ways Wardrip Family - 2 students in addition to Jonathan, both ways Ebeler Family - 3 students in addition to William, both ways Rumery Family - 1 (and possibly 2, if they don't mind being a little squooshed!) student(s) in addition to Michael, both ways Young Family - transporting Bobby TO Monterey Boulanger Family - transporting Lauren both ways Shickman Family - transporting Jordan to and from Monterey, returning with Bobby Young in addition to Jordan Chew Family - transporting Richard - and possibly others (not sure how many, though?) FROM Monterey only Miille Family - transporting Jake to - and also from? - Monterey Hamaguchi Family - transporting Evan to and from Monterey Horn Family - transporting Jenny to and from Monterey I am aware there are currently three students who need transportation both ways (Spencer, Dana, and Jacob), and that's NO problem at all! I am also aware that Richard Chew needs a ride TO Monterey only. Here are my questions, then: Do any of the following students need rides either to or from Monterey - or both ways? Alejandro Lavernia* Matthew Yee Stefan Waterstraat* Rowan McGuire Emma Maul Adam Drown Jung-Eun Shin Scott Yamamoto* May Zhang Sam Theg* Andy McCauley* * I know the family is coming, but don't know if the student still needs transportation (in case of differing departure times, etc.) If any of the families who are traveling to Monterey could also indicate to me if they could transport additional students, it would be a great help. We are still in need of passenger seats for several of the students. We are planning on departing Davis after school on Friday, April 1, and returning around 10 a.m. or so on Sunday, April 3. The band performs only on Saturday, but there are performances the students and families can attend on both Friday evening and Sunday during the day. All students need to have Forms 2a and 2b filled out and returned to me via my son, Michael (or directly to me, if you prefer, at 1132 Petra Ct., Davis 95618). If you are driving and have already filed Forms 3a and 3b (which is a three-page form, so beware...) with the school (because you have driven earlier in the school year), then you needn't fill these out again. If you haven't done this, though, please fill them out and get them to me via Michael as well. If you are only transporting your own child and haven't already filed Form 5 with the school, then you need to do this - I know, this one's ridiculous!! Thanks to our wonderful Wes Young(!), all necessary forms are on the Band Boosters' website. Please just download what you need, fill them out, and have your student give them to Michael in jazz band, who will give them to me. (It's possible Form 5 isn't quite on the website yet, too - might have to give it a couple of days...) As always, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! - and my apologies for this rather COMPLICATED message! Thanks to your wonderful help, I've got the transportation for the students figured out now. I just want to remind/request everyone to please take care of the paperwork now - and so sorry to give you "one more thing", but unfortunately, this does need to be done. Here's the deal, then: *ALL students need to have Forms 2a and 2b filled out*, as these are their permission slips. If you transported a student or students other than your own child to the Delta Jazz Festival back in December and remember submitting your driver's permission forms to either David Cross or Fred Lange (these are the forms that require proof of insurance, etc.), then you should be all set to go to Monterey (apart from your child's student permission form, that is). If, however, you did not do this at that time and you are transporting someone other than your own child to Monterey, then you will need to fill out *Forms 3a and 3b (and beware, as there are THREE pages to these forms!)* and send them in. Be on the lookout for frequent updates with important information about the trip. Some things to think about: Cell Phones: Be sure to check your cell phone rates for Canada. Some plans let you add coverage when you travel for a certain country if you don't already have it. Be sure to check calling AND texting rates and talk with your child before the trip as to how much they should use their phone. We have become used to texting and calling frequently during the day but this could become very costly when international roaming charges start adding up! Currency Exchange: We will be in a foreign country and in Canada the Canadian Dollar is used. Current rates today are 94 cents = $1 U.S. Some places may take US money in Victoria, but will always give you change back in Canadian dollars. We will talk with the students about spending their Canadian change before arriving back in Washington at the end of the trip. The students can change money at the hotel desk depending on the hotel's cash flow at the time, but the best way is to use the bank down the street, or the currency exchange machine in town nearby. We will have directions to places where money can be exchanged and be available for assistance for anyone who needs help. And as always - be sure you have your travel documents (passport/ official birth certificate) and check the band booster website for more information if you aren't sure what your child will need to bring. Extra supporting documents may be needed for students coming from dual households or single parents with sole custody of a child, or students with passports other than from the USA, so do check the band website for specific details on that. Individual emails with installment news specific to your child will be coming soon, so watch for those from John Horn. We need your help to spread the word to VOTE YES on Measure A. Please see Sheila's note below. Thank you for your support, ~JAH John Horn DHS Band Booster President >From Sheila Allen: The clock is ticking and time is running out to save our Davis School programs for this fall. Thank you! Thank you! I truly understand how busy you are and I thank you and the students thank you for all that you have done so far! Measure A is the best and only solution the district has to bring in $3 million dollars of needed funding for the next 2 years. We need EVERYONE'S help starting today. Here is your checklist for your organization: __ Phone Bank Volunteers __ Weekly newsletter or listserv information __ Talk it up! Talk to other parents, place on every agenda until it passes on May 3. Need more information?? www.yesforourstudents.org You personally hold the keys to keeping our schools great. This will be the easiest and most productive fundraiser you will ever be involved in and here is how: 1- Phone Banks - TOP PRIORITY - We have a list of previously supportive voters who need to be called so they know there is an election and we need their vote. Every PTA and Booster group needs to fill the phone bank with at least 15 volunteers. If you need help finding volunteers and for all your phone bank questions contact our fabulous phone bank coordinator Leslie Hunter at leslie_q_hunter at hotmail.com. Helpful Hint: Phone bank volunteers need more than a general email going out. Have your room or grade representatives or executive committee each be responsible for getting 1 or 2 people there. Talk to your principal and your teachers. Email, call, remind, remind again. Phone banking is every Mon - Thurs. 6:30-8:30 at 425 Second Street, at Coldwell Banker offices (not the house). Its fun and easy. Bring your cheery voice and we provide the phone script. 2- Weekly information in newsletter or listservs. We need to get the word out every week in every newsletter until May 3 (election deadline). Watch your email for a new "Measure A blurb" every Sunday from Stuart Drown sadrowndavis at yahoo.com. Post it yourself or get it to your newsletter person right away. Remember this is a mail-in-only election so people will need to find the ballot in their mailbox and mail it in to be counted. The vote requires 2/3 majority to pass so we really need all of our supportive families to dig that ballot out of their Spring Break week mail. 3- Talk it up! Word of mouth from a trusted friend or leader is our best chance. Learn about Measure A ( http://www.djusd.net/district/measa/measa#frequently-asked-questions-about ) then chat about it while waiting to pick up, in the grocery line, make an announcement at a concert, "Like" Measure A on your facebook... [http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/174870_167327999982053_4367664_q.jpg] Yes For Our Davis Students Make sure to agendize Measure A for every one of your meetings between today and May 3 so you can give an update and remind people to vote and get involved. I was a PTA President just a few years ago. I know what an important job it is and I am asking for your help. Please take a deep breath, get excited and get involved. Your enthusiasm is contagious. *Please send a quick response back to me so I know everyone received this information.* *see I am checking if you read the instructions all the way to the end :) Go A Team Go! The Canada trip is just 7 weeks away and final preparations are underway. Latest Canada News: On Monday of this week 1/3 of our group was rescheduled onto a different (and unusable) return flight by the Alaska Airlines computer. So for 6 hrs or so on Monday we had 60 kids walking home from Seattle. Thankfully by the end of the day, I was able to cancel their return flight on Alaska and repurchase new return flights for them on Southwest Airlines. In the end, it is a better flight and will get those kids home even earlier than the main group! Unfortunately, there was a hefty cost associated with this change, and a few kids had to be moved around from the original lists they signed up on in class, but still, the fact that all were once again flying back from Seattle to Sacramento on the same evening was everything I could hope for. Departure times for Thursday 5/19 did not change at all, and new lists will be posted to update everyone on the changes. And there's more great news. Due to all the great fundraising the group has done this year, the Band Boosters was able to offer a large sum to help offset the overall cost of this trip for us. That combined with diligent bargaining from the trip committee folks on everything from busses to hotels to food and activities, has resulted in a lower than expected overall trip cost, even with the recent airline fiasco costs. So the final trip cost per student will be $750! Our last installment amount for the trip is scheduled for this Friday April 1st. John Horn has been working hard to get individualized email updates out to each of you regarding your students trip credits, so these should be coming soon, but it is quite a big undertaking and has taken longer than expected. If your student did not participate in the recent Coconut Grove event (by either setting up, working the day of the event or playing in any band there) then your last email update from John would still be current. You may figure your final installment amount and send it in at anytime. (Checks made out to DHS Band Boosters and mailed to: PO Box 73522, Davis, CA 95617). If your student did participate in Coconut Grove then it would be best to wait for that email, as their credits will have changed, and thus your final installment as well. If you already sent more than that amount, John will have details on what your options are in that email. Watch for official permission slips and packing information to come home right after Spring Break. There will also be sign ups for parent volunteers for our departure and return day activities - so if you have some time to carpool to the airport or help check kids in for the trip, there will soon be emails looking for volunteers with those things. It's going to be a great trip! Katie Horn Trip Coordinator PS. You should be very proud of your band student. The Davis HS Combined Band has been invited to perform at Butchart Gardens this year. The coordinator there originally told me that they only had HS bands perform once many summers ago and it didn't go well at all. They have never had a HS group since, and he was not interested in having our group there either. But after reviewing a demo DVD, and after many conversations, the owners of the Gardens decided to give it another try and they have invited our group to play. It will get lots of publicity through the Festival Society which promotes the weekend events during the Victoria Day celebration. And best of all, the kids will get complimentary passes to tour the gardens (which also helped with those trip costs! Yay!) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If we don't get enough people purchasing the DVDs we loose more money. I figure the Jazz Band should be in top form as they are just coming off of Monterey Next Gen Jazz Festival, and we could use it for promo purposes as well. Here is the seating arrangement for the carpoolers. You might be able to get your student's luggage to the family in advance or bring it to your student before they leave. Going with John and Sue Ebeler (and Will): Spencer Park and Matthew Yee - (Ebeler phone - 758-0084) Going with Julie Hochman (and Noah) - Dana Natov and Richard Chew (Hochman phone - 758-5577) Going with Jill and Steve Theg (and Sam) - Jacob Cross, Emma Maul, and Jung-Eun Shin (Theg phone - 753-7871) We do want to try our best to get to Monterrey in time for a wonderful opening concert. It is in the Serra Ballroom I-MCC (which I assume is the Monterey Conference Center, which is adjacent to the hotel). Doors open at 7:30, and it fills up very quickly. Perhaps families who are already there might be able to save some seats? This might not be appropriate, though, so see what you think. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and should be a real treat! When you arrive at the hotel, there are parents designated as the check-in people. They are: The Shickmans The Hamaguchis The Yamamotos The Horns The Rumerys Any of these parents can pick up the *students'* packets and hand out their keys. Adult chaperones can get their keys at the front desk when they arrive. Whoever arrives first, please go to the front desk and ask for the packets. If you don't mind leaving your cell phone number at the desk for the incoming students to contact you, that would be a great help! There are seven rooms for the kids - 5 quads, 1 triple, 1 double. (There are a total of 22 rooms reserved for our entire party (for Friday - 12 doubles, 5 triples, and 5 quads, and for Saturday, 11 doubles, 4 triples, and 5 quads)). The person who has made the arrangements for us at the hotel is named Sandy Ram. We will have breakfast food for the kids for both mornings. As far as I know, they will have to purchase their other meals. They just need to bring what they need for band (they are responsible for bringing their own instruments!), some clothes - including a bathing suit, if they want to swim at the hotel! - and some money for meals. We are estimating our departure time back to Davis on Sunday, 4/3, will be approx. 10 a.m. I am attaching the directions I will be using, mostly so you can find your way to the hotel once you're in Monterey. I know there are different ways to get to Monterey, but thought I'd at least provide these. I am also attaching a list of the cell phone numbers I have for students and families who are going, so we can be in touch with each other easily. We will only use these numbers for this purpose on the trip. Many thanks to all of you! I hope this answers your questions. Please feel free to contact me - 753-4301 or 304-2577 - or by e-mail, if you have any concerns. This should be a GREAT TIME!!
