This Mondavi Center SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Program provides advanced training for serious jazz students through rehearsals, clinics and master classes with jazz professionals and performance opportunities and includes two separate programs: the High School All-Stars, an eight-person ensemble of the Sacramento region?s most talented high school musicians; and the all-new Improv Academy, consisting of monthly workshops focused on presenting concepts of improvisation and developmental skills to dedicated students. The School Band and Orchestra Magazine has recently announced an essay contest open to students from grades 4 to 12.  Although I can see that this magazine would generate more affinity to instrumental music teachers, there is nothing I can see in this contest that would exclude choral students from participating.

The awards include cash (check) scholarship money to winning students and purchase vouchers to the student's winning school from music companies.  The theme of the essay contest is

"Now more than ever music education is important because?"

There are two student categories.  One is grades four to eight and the other is grades nine to twelve.

The deadline is December 31, 2013.

Two years ago a 7th grader from Harper JH (one of Greg Brucker's students) was one of the winners in her category.

I graduated from Davis Senior High in 2009 and am looking to sell the Fox 330 oboe I played during my time in the Davis music program.  If you know of any students who would be interested, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could pass on my contact information to them!  I anticipate being in the Davis area until December.

Some information about the oboe:
- Resin body
- includes low Bb and left F keys (no third octave key)
- has alternate C key ("banana key")
- cork and pads all in great condition
- a couple of minor cosmetic scratches - do not affect sound
- comes with a hard case in good condition, reed case with space for 3 reeds, and a silk cleaning swab

Greetings DHS Band Boosters,
I hope everyone has had a great summer!!

First off, I know that the listserver is not updated yet with the new names added and last year's graduating senior families moved to the Family & Friends list.
That will be done as we get into the year and get everyone's emails logged in.

People are already at work getting things going for this coming school year, which looks like it will be great!

Here are a couple of key items that you should be aware of in the first couple weeks of the school year:

                August:
                                Thurs 8/29:  6:00 pm, DHS Band Welcome Back BBQ (put on by the Band Boosters.  All DHS band members are invited (Concert, Symphonic, Jazz & Pep).
                                                        It will be held in the MPR Courtyard on DHS Campus.
                                                         7:30 pm, the first Pep Band Rehearsal  (may even have some initial marching practice; that's up to Mr. Slabaugh).
                                Sat 8/31:       DHS Band Car Wash #1 - 9:00 am at the DJUSD District Lot, 5th & C.   This is the 1st of 4 that we are doing.
                                                        Gwynn Benner is already hard at work getting volunteers together to help with this and the follow on car washes.  Please sign up.

If you are currently signed up with Scrip for the DHS Bands then you should 
 have received a message from Scrip asking you to renew.  If you renew by  
Saturday, August 31, you won't need a new Scrip card.  Simply follow the  
link below and in less than a minute you are good to go for the year, with no  
interruptions to your scrip donations.
