​Davis --- The Davis Youth Flute Choir directed by flutistMaquette Kuper is accepting applicants to join its annualsummer Flute Camp from July 8 to 18. The students willperform its 30th Annual Summer Music Concert, featuring both classical and jazz music on Thursday, July 18, at 7:30 p.m.  The choir, directed by Maquette Kuper, will perform in atrium of the Davis Art Center at 1919 F Street.

There are two flute choir levels for students to join.  The Junior Flute Choir is for students in grades 7-9 and the Senior Flute Choir is for students in grades 10-12.  Students wishing to join the junior choir must be proficient on the instrument, read music well, perform all notes from low C to high G, and have a basic understanding of rhythm.  Usually students who have completed one year of advanced band instruction at the elementary schoollevel are qualified.  The junior choir trains students to improveensemble skills through critical listening focusing on elements such as rhythm and intonation, and helping the student to bemore highly aware of their individual part as it relates to the group. The junior choir students are also introduced to the alto and bass flutes. This choir meets weekdays, Monday-Friday and Monday-Thursday from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Davis Art Center. The Senior Flute Choir is for advanced flute students and performs both classical and jazz repertoire.  Retired Davis Senior High School Director of Bands, Fredrick Lange, will lead the jazz portion of the concert.  These students perform flute choir repertoire for piccolo, flute, alto flute and bass flute. The Senior Flute Choir will meet Monday through Friday and Monday through Thursday from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m.  A jazz rehearsal with the combo will take place at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 at the art center.  The daily rehearsal place is TBA.  The grade divisions for these choirs are recommendations only. In addition to the summer Flute Camp, the Davis Youth Flute Choir has a year-round advanced group that has toured Japan and South Korea, performed at the National Flute Association convention in Anaheim in 2010 and looks forward to performing at the convention this August in New Orleans.  The choir also organizes annual benefit concert performances which have raised funds for the music programs of Davis High School as well as the three junior high schools, Emerson, Harper and Holmes.   Each December, the choir performs holiday music at the Sacramento International Airport as well as giving community service concerts in various Davis and Woodland venues.  The choir is available to hire to perform at events and weddings.
