In case you have forgotten, I would like a photo of your student when they were a toddler and one recent photo, showing the wonderful young adult they have become. Please send them to me as soon as possible, as I need to create a slide show honoring these wonderful students. If you have sent the photo, please check your outbox to see that it was indeed mailed. Can you contact members of the school board and DJUSD administration (see below) and help us get the addition of general music for elementary school students included in the offerings for next year? This will result in significantly improved music instruction for all Davis students and is a win-win for everyone! Many thanks! Mr. S Greetings: In the next few weeks the school board will make a couple of key decisions that could determine if the Davis elementary school will have a choral program for grades 4-6 and a general music program for 3rd graders. Once decision is on whether to approve a proposal to spend one time money (called "LCAP funds") to have the program for the next school year, 2016-2017. The other is a decision to have the program funded on an ongoing basis through the school parcel tax which comes up for a vote this November. A favorable outcome on the second decision would begin funding for the following school year, 2017-2018. I am asking you, as Davis residents and advocates for a well-rounded education in our schools, which includes music, please contact the school board members and tell them to support funding of elementary music in the schools. Please share this with any other community parents who would also like to see this program happen. Please send your message as soon as possible to best guarantee that the board and administrators will move forward. Thank you for your time and support! sample e-mail message: Dear [Board member], The administration has the opportunity to fund Elementary General Music for all third graders and a pullout option for Elementary Choral Music for grades 4-6. I would like to see such a program funded and implemented in our schools. Many other schools in the Sacramento area already have these components in their curricula. I value that our school actually meet state standards for music instruction, and I personally think such a program is important because: [just a few reasons to consider] --It provides access to music instruction for all regardless of income or academic ability --I believe in well-rounded curricular instruction in all grade levels, including elementary grades --Music instruction provides many cognitive and especially many non-cognitive benefits to developing children that are not readily available in other disciplines --Our district should be able to set an example by having programs like this Sincerely, [your name] This email message is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain privileged and confidential information. Directors report (Tom) Been busy - 3 honor bands , 23 students participating, 3 outreach concerts, sponsored by Davis Arts Foundation; all went extremely well. Symphonic band is getting ready for the Golden Empire Music Festival If you get 3 superiors in a CMDA adjudicated festival, then we go to the state championships. Trying to get the CMDA board to certify our Davis festival as an official adjudication Golden Empire music festival . We could almost fill the festival with our own Davis bands across Junior High & High School groups. Coconut Grove coming up this weekend. All the jazz ensembles did a performance for the schools today. We had a mechanical failure when a stand fell on a flute that was sitting on a chair. It has since been repaired, funded by the boosters. Norcal/Casmec - Tom is on the board. So only have to pay for mileage for this. There are minimal expenses for this event. Printer is down in the band room. Need to determine next steps. Davis auditioned for the band & orchestra to perform at the capital. This will happen on May 19th. Tom to check to see if they will provide percussion instruments. Look into Unitrans vs Yellow bus options. 4 hrs. Wes to check on cost of unitrans. Have Jan (Bruce Colby) - tom to check on list of authorized bus companies. 70 band & 60 for symphony. Band boosters to cover the cost of the bus and pizza lunch. Coconut Grove - about 75 tickets on Sat, 60 on Sun Phil Bachand proposing that we cancel the event. Fairly apathetic response. It is a lot of work and there isn't any response. If we can't get people interested , Can the band boosters give a merit scholarship at the event. Vote : Keep it going Y/N - YES. Chase Brookman & Aaron bushnell will be our MC's for coconut Grove. Message-ID: <31E5EEBE70B474419207FB83C01C030325889140@FMSMSX110.amr.corp.intel.com> All, Due to quite a few people (many of our regular attendees) & most of the officers not being able to attend on the DHS Band Booster mtg this Wednesday, I am canceling the Face-to-Face portion of the meeting and changing it to a ?Virtual? meeting, which will be done via email this month. So we will not actually meeting in a room, but instead use the technology at our fingertips to keep things going. Below are the items ?discussed?. Agenda for the Virtual Mtg: (Write-up owners) Virtual Meeting Opens for comments/inputs: On Apr 12, 2016, at 11:52 AM March Band Booster Mtg Minutes viewing & approval (John H) ? Send out for May BB meeting approval. Upcoming Calendar of Events for the Year (John): We will review this in the May BB meeting as well. John & Tom are continuing to work the details of next year?s calendar. Several items still need to be finalized before we send it out. Directors Update (Tom) Jazz Invitational (Thur 4/14) - the concert features UC Davis' jazz ensemble, beginning at 7:30. The DHS band's call time is 6:30. We'll play music from the semester, including combos, and conclude with a jam session with UCD students. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Picnic Day Parade (Sat 4/16) - Call time for the Pp Band is 8:00am on the Russell IM Field, located on the North boundary of UCD, facing Russell Blvd. We are in the fourth row, closest to Russell Blvd, the 4th entry from the front of this row. The attire is blue polo shirts and jeans or shorts. Absolutely no open toed shoes will be allowed! Wear closed toe shoes (tennis or athletic shoes), bring water bottles, hats, and sunscreen. Mr. S will be distributing forms that must be signed by the parents and returned on Saturday morning. The parade ends at 3rd and A street, where the students will be dismissed. Please plan on carrying everything you bring. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Capitol Concert (Thur 5/19) - We are performing for the noontime press conference, sharing the stage with the Bakersfield HS Chamber Singers. We will arrive at the State Capitol no later then 10:15am, as we are sharing buses with the DHS Symphony who performs at 11:15am. We follow the Symphony Orchestra with the aforementioned choir joining us. HELP NEEDED: We need parent chaperones (about six) to help with the event. It would also be nice if the boosters are able to help offset the cost of pizza for the band to eat after the performance. The expected departure time from DHS is 9:30am and the estimated return time is ~2:00pm. Note from John: Yes the boosters can help with lunch for the band members. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reno Jazz Festival (Thur 4/28-Fri 4/29) - We will leave DHS on Thursday, April 28th after 7th period and head directly to Reno. As you can see, the performances begin quite early and we'll need to leave the hotel early Friday morning for UNR. The final performance ends at ~12:45pm and we'll depart UNR for Davis immediately thereafter. Band Boosters is helping to coordinate the trip; transportation, hotel, dinner, etc. [cid:image003.png at 01D1A62C.0A942D70] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Senior Concert ? (Tue 5/3) - The first half will feature the Symphonic and the combined Concert and Symphonic Bands in performance. A brief intermission will be focused upon the awards and distribution of the cords (already ordered and should arrive in time for distribution). I will be sending out an email shortly regarding the need for "munchkin" and graduating senior photos. We will need assistance in program distribution and possibly refreshments at the intermission. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jazz on a Summer?s Eve (Thur 6/2) - The final Jazz Band performance will be on June 2nd. We will perform some new works and a combined piece with all th Jr. High and HS jazz bands at the end of the concert that we received in NOLA. We will need assistance in program distribution and possibly refreshments at the intermission. We have the Festival of the Arts on Saturday, May 7th at Central Park Coconut Grove Outcome/Summary (Phil): No inputs, so we?ll talk about it at the May mtg. Pancake Breakfast outcome (Karen) The Applebee's Pancake breakfast fundraiser which had been scheduled for February was canceled due to poor ticket sales. (We needed to sell 100 minimum and only sold 75.) It has not been rescheduled but Applebee's would be happy to have us schedule a future date for this event. We would sell tickets for $15 and keep $10 per ticket. Live music would be provided by DHS band musicians. We may want to try this again next school year. Treasurer?s Update (Ron) Coconut Grove revenue was $12,075 per the auction website. Our account shows receipts of $11,385, so there is $690 unaccounted for at the moment. The net proceeds based on the lower number came out to $8,904. It seems to me we easily have $6k to put toward Disney and $3k to put toward NOLA as refunds if we want to assist as we proposed in March. A pdf of the treasure?s report will be included with the minutes on the DHS Band Booster website. Please take a look at them, and send me any feedback or change recommendations. We will vote to approve them at the next band booster meeting in the beginning of June. There are two main changes that are being implemented. 1. Is the removal of all language associated with Student Accounting or Student Accounts. That is no longer being done, and hasn't been for a while. 2. The term of office for the officers is changing from the night of the Annual mtg to July 1st of the year. a. This is mainly because taking over at the June annual mtg doesn't make much sense since the year isn't quite over yet. b. And it resolves the issue of an incoming sophomore parent who wants to be an officer but can't be elected at that meeting because their student isn't officially a 10th grader yet. They would have to wait until after the end of school to have the elections, which doesn't align with the annual mtg. So please take a look and send me any comments. Now is the time to collect those last minute items. Be sure to refer to the bright orange packing sheet that came in your forms packet when packing for the trip. Most important is FOOTWEAR. Be sure your student has all black closed toed shoes - laces, grommets, sides and black socks or stockings. Disney is very particular about this. They will not allow a student backstage with sandals, and will use duct tape on their shoes and legs if there is anything but all black showing. Trust me, we know this from experience. Note also, that for this trip the kids are in DRESS BLACKS. That is the same as they were wearing at the concert this week. This is a bit different from our typical tour clothing, but again, this is Disney. Also: Black dress pants. No black jeans. Disney will not allow a student to perform on stage if they are in jeans. They have no problem keeping a student from the stage - for Disney it's as much about the presentation as it is the performance. Trip Check In: Veteran's Memorial Theater Lobby Friday May 13th 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Students will check in their luggage and instrument, then attend morning classes and return to depart during lunch. If your student will be traveling to or from Disney other than on our group bus, then you must fill out the Alternate Transportation Form that came in the big red forms packet, as well as send us your student's travel information. A few last minute reminders: 1. Check-in is Friday morning before school 7:30 - 10 AM at the Veteran's Memorial Theater lobby. We still need helpers. Use the link below to sign up to help! For those in Wind Ensemble (Symphonic/Concert Bands) wearing a suit or tux for their dress blacks: If you can put that in a suit bag that will help immensely both for packing the bus as well as for a speedy departure after our performance on Tuesday. [http://www.signupgenius.com/] Group Organizing Made Easy! Sign Up 2. Students will attend Friday morning classes. Then bring a lunch to the bus area and be prepared to leave during lunch as soon as we can get the busses loaded. 3. NEW: Students will need a plastic bag, string bag or similar for our final day. The students will be using this bag to store their regular clothes in for quick access after their performance on Tuesday, so that they can change back into clothes for the bus ride home. We don't need 100 kids opening up their suitcases in the back lot of Disney, so if they all have their change of clothes in a separate bag inside the bus, this process will go much more easily. 4. Good news! We were able to cover some extra meals for the group. So now the students will only need to purchase 1 lunch and 2 dinners in Disneyland. (In addition to a meal en route to and from Davis at a rest stop). If your student wants a souvenir send some extra cash for that as well. We have a "trip bank" for anyone that finds they did not budget appropriately and students can borrow funds to get through the trip. No one will be left to go hungry on this trip! 5. Students may bring snacks on the bus, but hopefully we will stop enough times that they can eat at those times. Anything brought onto the bus must be peanut free as we have several students with nut allergies. If you aren't sure, leave it at home. Snacks we provide are all nut free. You will find our detailed itinerary on our band web site before departure so you can follow along as we go through our trip! Visit www.dhsbandboosters.com The students will have all the chaperone contact numbers, but here are some for you too. Should anything come up during the trip don't hesitate to contact us: Katie Horn: 530-798-0757 John Horn: 916-804-5017 Otto Raabe: 707-392-9867 Tom Slabaugh: 916-806-2790 We are staying at the Embassy Suites Anaheim North: 3100 Frontera Street, Anaheim. 714-632-1221 And for fun, check out the DHS Band facebook page as there may be updates and cool photos posted during the trip! https://www.facebook.com/groups/246177752098868/ Thanks for all of your support this year. Message-ID: Hi all, Just a reminder that the course syllabus states that the deadline for all points, including the required concert report, is due on this coming Friday at 3:30pm. ONE EXCEPTION!! If you would like to attend the band concert at Harper Junior High this coming Friday, I will accept ONLY this concert report after the due date. In order to receive credit for attending the aforementioned concert, the paper is due on Monday June 5th at 2:30pm. Late papers will not be accepted. Finally, it is also important that any attendance issues outstanding need to be cleared now at the front office. If you are in doubt, please contact the attendance office and check to make sure your absence is excused. Unexcused absences (this includes unverified absences) and tardies count against your overall grade. This is a VERY IMPORTANT mtg, and sets the stage for the upcoming year. Tomorrow night we have a bunch of important and fun items. We will watch the Disney Videos that the kids made in the Disney studios. We will talk about our current financials, and give an update on our account status. We will vote on the proposed amendments to the By-Laws. We will look over the upcoming year (briefly). We will look at the committee positions that are open and who could potentially help with various activities. And most importantly, we will have our DHS Band Booster Officer Elections. At this point 3 of our 4 officers are "Graduating" or will not be back next year, and will not be eligible to continue as an officer. Both the President and the Vice President positions are opening up. Our By-Laws and the State of California non-profit guidelines require a President and Treasurer in order for the group to remain an active & viable 501c3 organization. So even if we have someone in an interim position for the summer, then we can finalize things in the fall, this is needed to keep the Band Boosters going through the summer. So please think about helping out and if you would be willing to step into one of these positions, or even have two people share the position.
