ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  In 1972, Apollo 16 departed for the moon.  From Cape Canaveral, Florida, Apollo 16, the fifth of six U.S. lunar landing missions, was successfully launched on its 238,000-mile journey to the moon. On April 20, astronauts John W. Young and Charles M. Duke descended to the lunar surface from Apollo 16, which remained in orbit around the moon with a third astronaut, Thomas K. Mattingly, in command. Young and Duke remained on the moon for nearly three days, and spent more than 20 hours exploring the surface of Earth's only satellite.

TODAY  

	*	The GSA would like to remind all of those who signed up to participate in the Day of Silence that it is TODAY. Please wear your armbands, stay silent, and join us for our breaking the silence party after school on the Quad. GSA would like to thank all of those bringing attention to the struggles LGBTQ youth face on a daily basis by participating in Day of Silence TODAY.

	*	There is a CSF general meeting TODAY, during lunch in P-13.

	*	Come to the International Film Festival TODAY at 6:00P.M. to enjoy ethnic foods (Chinese, Japanese, French, German, and Mexican at 7:00P.M.). Films are free and will be shown in rooms of the P-Building. Ask for EXTRA CREDIT from your teachers. The films are: The Chorus, Good-bye Levin, Under the Same Moon, Hero, Joyeux Noel, and The Girl Who Leaps Through Time.

	*	The Spring Blood Drive is TODAY.  You must have an appointment to donate blood and you will be excused from any classes you miss.  Students who are under 18 need a parent consent form, which you can pick up when you make your appointment.  If you are 16 years or older, in good health, with no recent tattoos, you can donate!  Please help us save lives.  Look for Drippy the Giant Blood Drop at lunch or come to the nurse's office to sign up.

	*	SENIORS:  TODAY is the deadline to submit applications for many local scholarships.  Scholarships due Friday include the Standard Application for Local Scholarships, Yolo Masonic Lodge, PTA, California School Employees Association, Armstrong Family Education, David Murphy, Kiwanis Club, Novozymes, and many more.  Bring your completed applications to the Career Center TODAY by 4:00 P.M.!

	*	Don't miss the Drama Department's production of A Tribute to Tony Fields.  This years' show features singing and dancing performances of Thriller, a Michael Jackson Medley, Footloose, and more, as well as segments from A Chorus Line.  Shows are TODAY and Saturday at 7 pm.  Student tickets are only $6.  See you there!

	*	Interested in becoming a Peer Helper next year?  Applications can be found at the front office and are due TODAY.  Please turn in applications to the Peer Helping box located in the front office.  Everyone is invited to apply!

	*	Davis High School Orchestra's audition results are now posted in music rooms. Things to remember:  to complete the audition process if you are NOT intending on accepting your group placement, you must email me ASAP, by TODAY at: amoreno at djusd.k12.ca.us <mailto:amoreno at djusd.k12.ca.us>.  It is very important to communicate your intentions because your seat will need to be filled from our waiting list. When you email me please indicate full name, instrument, student ID #, and your reason for not accepting.  If you need an extension of time, email me your request and give me the date by which you expect to make your decision. If you are accepting your seat in an audition orchestra, do nothing. Your name and ID number will be submitted to the DHS Counselors and you will be automatically enrolled for next year after TODAY.

	*	Monday, April 19, is the deadline for submitting information and articles for the May 2010 Davis High School PTA newsletter.  Please send news, announcements, etc. to the DHS PTA Media listserver at DHSPTAmedia at mailman.dcn.org <mailto:DHSPTAmedia at mailman.dcn.org>. Please include your name, e-mail address and phone number in case the newsletter editor has questions about your submission.  The newsletter is the ONLY communication tool that reaches ALL DHS families, whether they have Internet access or not. The newsletter is generally available at the beginning of each month.  This is a great way to inform, notify or enlist parents' help for upcoming DHS school and student activities.
 
	*	Attention Seniors!  Do you have what it takes to be one of the Graduation Speech Presenters at this year's commencement ceremony?  If so, written drafts must be submitted to Mr. Dietrich by 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 26th.  Speeches should be less than 3 minutes in duration when presented.  A speech should look ahead to your role as a member of the adult population and should move listeners to appreciate Davis High School, as well as the memories and values it holds.  Oral auditions before a panel of judges will be held on Monday, May 3rd during lunch in Room S-7.  Good luck!

	*	Are you interested in joining the 2010-2011 DHS Science Bowl team? Then come to S-9 on Monday, April 19th during lunch! We'll see you there!

	*	Want a delicious dinner full of pizza-zz? Come to the Speech and Debate Team's fundraiser at Lamppost Pizza, 1260 Lake Blvd, in West Davis, from 4-9pm on Tuesday the 20th.  Help make sure we can continue supporting Davis' finest high school speakers and debaters at regional and state championships!

	*	Davis Rotary is sponsoring a Four-Way Speech Contest!  To participate, high school students prepare a speech on any subject and present it before Rotary judges on May 3.  The first place winner will receive $200, and a chance to compete in a second regional contest on May 12, where the winner will receive $900!  Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.

	*	Are you an awesome piano player? Would you like a rewarding musical experience? See Mrs. Gardias in PA-8 to schedule an audition. The deadline for applying is Wednesday, April 21st.

	*	Got a sick whip? The car show is just around the corner! Grab an application in the front office. They are due back on April 21st.

	*	SENIORS:  Are you planning to pursue a major or career in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement?  If so, there is a new scholarship available for you!  The Michael Lawrence Rivera Law Enforcement Scholarship is offering $2,500 to students interested in law enforcement.  Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for an application.

	*	Volunteers needed to decorate downtown Davis for Schoolapalooza on Sat., April 24, starting at 10am.  Help the Davis Schools Foundation save teachers and programs.  If available, contact Mrs. Holt mmholt at pacbell.net <mailto:mmholt at pacbell.net>

	*	The Davis High School Cheer squad is looking for students with school spirit who love to dance, tumble and stunt. Come learn about DHS Cheer at one of two Cheer Information Nights, 7 p.m. on April 21 and 22 in Room O-7 at DHS. Students in grades 8-11 are invited to try out  - both girls and boys! A try-out clinic runs 4 to 6 p.m. May 3-7 in the DHS Dance Room. Try-outs are all day on Saturday, May 8, in the DHS Dance Room.
