ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  In 1838, Naturalist John Muir, a dedicated advocate for the protection of American wild lands, is born in Dunbar, Scotland. Muir developed a love for the Sierra Nevada territory and a passionate desire to preserve the wild state of the area. In 1892, he and several other early preservationists formed the Sierra Club. Muir served as the club president for 22 years, tirelessly advocating the importance of preserving wilderness.

	*	The Davis High School Cheer squad is looking for students with school spirit who love to dance, tumble and stunt. Come learn about DHS Cheer at one of two Cheer Information Nights, 7 p.m. TODAY and tomorrow in Room O-7 at DHS. Students in grades 8-11 are invited to try out  - both girls and boys! A try-out clinic runs 4 to 6 p.m. May 3-7 in the DHS Dance Room. Try-outs are all day on Saturday, May 8, in the DHS Dance Room. 	*	All 12th grade students are to attend the mandatory Senior Assembly on Thursday, 4/22, at 11 a.m. in the IPAB. They will receive valuable information to help make their senior year end well. Students will be entered in a drawing for great prizes but they must be present to be entered and to win. On Thursday, a Jostens representative will be on campus from 8:45 - 11 to hand out announcements only. On Friday, a Jostens representative will be on campus from 9:45 - noon to hand out caps and gowns only.

	*	Cultural Exchange Club meets this Thursday, April 22 in P-14 during lunch. We'll see you there!

	*	The DHS Site council will met this Thursday, April 22 in the Library West conference Room.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

	*	Attention Seniors: Ed. Code Section: 48205 requires prior written notice to the Attendance Office before you tour colleges during school time so that your absence may be excused, upon approval by administration.

	*	Attention Seniors!  Do you have what it takes to be one of the Graduation Speech Presenters at this year's commencement ceremony?  If so, written drafts must be submitted to Mr. Dietrich by 3:30 p.m. on Monday, April 26th.  Speeches should be less than 3 minutes in duration when presented.  A speech should look ahead to your role as a member of the adult population and should move listeners to appreciate Davis High School, as well as the memories and values it holds.  Oral auditions before a panel of judges will be held on Monday, May 3rd during lunch in Room S-7.  Good luck!

	*	Lake Tahoe Community College is offering it's popular "Intensive Spanish Summer Institute" again this year!  Students can earn units of credit in courses designed to promote the development of fluency in Spanish.  This week-long course is scheduled for August 8-13 and will include all levels of the Spanish language, along with several breakout sessions from cooking to art, dancing and music, history and holidays, family customs and celebrations, etc.  High school students and adults are welcome to apply.  The program fills up fast, so come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office soon for more information!

	*	Davis Rotary is sponsoring a Four-Way Speech Contest!  To participate, high school students prepare a speech on any subject and present it before Rotary judges on May 3.  The first place winner will receive $200, and a chance to compete in a second regional contest on May 12, where the winner will receive $900!  Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.

	*	SENIORS:  Are you planning to pursue a major or career in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement?  If so, there is a new scholarship available for you!  The Michael Lawrence Rivera Law Enforcement Scholarship is offering $2,500 to students interested in law enforcement.  Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for an application.
