DAY IN HISTORY

On April 14, 1865 John Wilkes Booth, an actor and Confederate sympathizer, fatally shoots President Abraham Lincoln at a play at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C.  The attack came only five days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his massive army at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, effectively ending the American Civil War.

REMINDER

1. Sign-up this week in the quad at lunchtime to donate blood at the Blood Drive on Friday. You must be a minimum of 16 years old. Parent permission is required for 16 & 17 year olds. Students who are not 18 and have signed up for the blood drive, remember to bring your parent consent forms tomorrow and drink plenty of water before donating. Giving blood is safe, easy, and takes approximately one hour from start to finish. After the blood donation, you will be asked to rest briefly and light refreshments will be provided. Let's try to beat the number of pints donated from last fall! Questions!? See Mrs. Youtsey in the nurse's office.

2. Attention Juniors and Seniors! If you are planning to miss school time to visit a college or colleges, please bring to the Attendance Office a written letter from your parents stating that you are visiting colleges prior to the visit! Please include the dates you will be gone and the names of the college/colleges you will be touring. If you bring prior notice to the Attendance Office, the absences can be excused. If you bring notice after the visit, your absence will be unexcused.

NEW

1. Attention Seniors! Do you have what it takes to be one of the Graduation Speech Presenters at this year's commencement ceremony? If so, written drafts must be submitted to Vice Principal McHale by 3:30pm on Friday, April 28th. Speeches must be less than 3 minutes in duration when presented. A speech should look ahead to your role as a member of the adult population and should move listeners to appreciate Davis High School, as well as the memories and values it holds. Oral auditions before a panel of judges will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd during lunch in room P-23. Good luck!

2. There will be a presentation on April 20th at lunch time in the IPAB about "Sustainability and Biofuels Research". This will feature Dr. Zhiliang Fan an assistant professor in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at UC Davis. Her group is working on advancing technologies for production of fuels and chemicals from renewable resources. Current research is focused on novel processes for ethanol production from cellulosic materials. She received her Ph.D. along with a master's degree in Engineering Management from Dartmouth College.

3. The City of Davis will be holding Sports by the Skate Park, a pick-up sports program every Tuesday from 6-8pm at Community Soccer field next to the Davis Art Center. All high school students are welcome and no previous experience required. This month's sport is ultimate frisbee, and snacks will be provided. 4. SENIORS: We want to know where you're going after high school! Acceptance notices from colleges are finally starting to arrive and decisions are being made about life after high school! Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office and sign the WHERE ARE YOU GOING!? list and tell us if you'll be going to college, working, joining the military, traveling, studying abroad, or whatever your plans are. See you soon in the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office (located next to counseling).

5. Any student who has not collected their portfolio for AP art studio MUST collect it by the end of next week. See any art teacher.

6. Calling all Friendship Day hopefuls!! Remember to turn in your forms in by THIS Friday, to Mr. Williams room P-14. Don't forget!


7. DHS CHEERLEADING TRY-OUTS           The Davis High School Cheerleading team invites tumblers, dancers and students with school spirit to try out for the award-winning squad. Students entering 9th-12th grade in the fall are eligible to try out. A mandatory Cheer Information Night for prospective cheerleaders and a parent is at 6:30 p.m. on April 19 in room N-8 at DHS. A tryout-clinic runs April 25-28 in the DHS Dance Room. The clinic runs 4-7 on Monday and 4-6 on Tuesday-Thursday. Tryouts are at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, in the Dance Room. Prospective cheerleaders are invited to work on their skills at the team's open gym from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in April in the DHS Dance Room. The cheer coaches will be offering corrections and feedback, as well as providing assistance with tumbling and stunting. 9. CSF members: There will be a CSF general meeting this Friday at lunch in P-13. Seniors should come and check the current status in CSF.

TODAY

1. Cafeteria: Pasta Day-Mac and Cheese with broccoli, ravioli, spaghetti with meat sauce and cheesy bread stick, pizza, sandwich.

2. Varsity Football announcement! We will have our first mandatory "Pathway to Success" lunch meeting on Thursday, April 14th at 12:15 in the football portable for ALL football players planning to play varsity football next year (including those in other sports-this is why I picked the lunch time slot). Since no other teams or coaches are having meetings at this time I expect everyone to be in attendance, with the exception of the 9th graders who have been coming to 0-period.

3. Come to the FREE concerts by the DHS Jazz Band/Jazz Combos at 7:30 pm Sunday April 17 and the DHS Symphonic Band along with the three Junior High Bands at 7:30 pm Tuesday April 19. Both concerts are in the Brunelle Performance Hall (IPAB).

4. DHS DANCE TEAM TRY-OUTS! The Davis High School Dance Team invites all dancers with school spirit to try out for this dynamic squad. A tryout dance clinic runs April 18-20 in the DHS Dance Room. The clinic runs 4-5:30 on Monday-Wednesday and tryouts are at 4:00 on Thursday, April 21 in the DHS Dance Room. Participants must complete and bring with them, on the first day of dance clinic, a DHS Sports Participation Form they can get in from the DHS Athletics Office.

1. JUNIORS: Would you like to participate in an all-expense paid leadership camp this summer? Camp-Royal, funded and run by our local Rotary Club, is a premier leadership-training opportunity for high school juniors. The program, held each June in the mountains of northern California, is a concentrated, energy packed week of information, ideas and strategies that will help the camper return to his/her school a more effective leader. This year, Camp Royal will be held from June 12-18. The deadline to apply is April 15. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for an application.

2. A reminder to any football players who received a D or F on their quarter report grades-you have mandatory study hall on Tuesdays at 3:45in the library until the next progress report. This opportunity is available for ALL football players regardless of GPA. We have a certified teacher plus a math and science tutor to assist you.

3. Day of Silence sign-ups are at lunch in the quad. We are echoing the Silence of the LGBT Community. Come and sign-up today to support the cause!!
