March 16, 1802 U.S. Military Academy Established

The United States Military Academy--the first military school in the United States--was founded by Congress for the purpose of educating and training young men in the theory and practice of military science. Located at West Point, New York, the U.S. Military Academy is often simply known as West Point. Located on the high west bank of New York's Hudson River, West Point was the site of a Revolutionary-era fort built to protect the Hudson River Valley from British attack. The academy is now under the general direction and supervision of the department of the U.S. Army and has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students.

REMINDER

1. The SCHOLARSHIP AND SUMMER ACTIVITIES FAIR has been POSTPONED for one week due to bad weather. The event has been rescheduled for Tuesday, March 22 at lunch outside the main office entrance. Come to the Fair for information on scholarships, jobs, volunteer opportunities and summer activities. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, March 22 at lunch!

NEW

1. SENIORS: Would you like free money to help pay for college? Then you should apply for scholarships! Twenty-five local scholarships for students graduating from a high school in Davis are currently being offered by the local Davis community. Scholarships can really help pay for college, so don't miss out on this great opportunity! Every one of these scholarships will be awarded to somebody; it might as well be you! Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office to find out more about these and many other scholarships available!

2. Want to check out some tight cars and talk to the auto shop students that work on them? Come to the quad today at lunch. Auto Shop students will have their car projects on display for you to view. Some students will be showing off their sound systems too. If you are interested in auto shop classes here at DHS or you just like cars, come to the quad today at lunch for some automotive showin' off.

3. Do you need extra credit in Math or do you just like to solve math problems. Well, the last CAML test is Tuesday, March 22 at any math room. Ask you math teacher about extra credit.

4. Come to the Gay-Straight Alliance Fridays at lunch in L-10. Come help us get ready for Day of Silence and other upcoming events. Everyone is welcome.

5. Would you like an internship position this summer? The County of Yolo is offering students age 15-19 internships in local government. Students volunteer at least 5 hours per week in an internship position that matches their future career and college goals. You get to learn about county government and the benefits of public employment, gain new experiences, and meet new people! The program takes place over the summer from June 13-August 4. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.

6. SENIORS: If you're planning to attend UCD, have a minimum GPA of 3.5, and you worked at a job during high school, you may qualify for the $12,029 Beeghly-Merritt Scholarship! Applications are now available in the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office. The deadline to apply is April 15, so come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office next to counseling to pick up an application!

7. Are you interested in being a CSF Officer? Applications are available in P-13. The deadline to submit an application is Friday, March 18. CSF elections will be held on Friday, March 25 at lunch in P-13.

8. Seniors: Last Chance to pre-order your cap/gown/tassel is Tuesday, March 22nd 2:30 to 3:30 in the quad. Cost is $50.00...if interested in ordering DHS Graduation Announcements please see Jostens at this time.

9. Class Rings: DHS Class Rings will be available for pick-up on Tuesday, March 22nd 2:30 to 3:30 in the quad. New orders require a $50.00 deposit.

1. The annual City of Davis So Cal Safari is coming up on April 4-7. Tour 6 Southern California schools including Cal Poly and USC for only $490. Deadline to sign up is March 25 and for more information visit www.davisteenscene.org

2. Community Service hours available! Davis Branch Library is seeking a volunteer who reads and speaks Korean, for two hours per month, to help order books and screen donations. Contact Katie Hager at (530)757-3392 or come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.

3. Are you a high school junior interested in pursuing a career in the energy resources industry? Chevron Corporation together with USC's School of Engineering will host an energy resources summer camp for high school juniors at the USC campus in Los Angeles. The program will introduce high school juniors to career opportunities in energy resources fields such as fossil fuels, solar, biofuel, wind, nuclear energy, and information technologies. The camp is free of charge and will take place from June 26-July 1. Come to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for more information.
