THIS DAY IN HISTORY:  1945 - During World War II, about 30,000 U.S. Marines landed on Iwo Jima.

TODAY'S BLACK HISTORY MONTH FACT!  Vonetta Flowers became the first black gold medalist in the
history of the Winter Olympic Games. She and partner Jull Brakken won the inagural women's two-
person bobsled event in 2002 at Salt Lake City, Utah.

ATHLETICS:  Attention Spring Athletes! Information about tryouts is posted on the Athletics Office
window and on the DHS website. Please note:  the Spring Break for Davis schools does not align with the
rest of the schools in our league. Many spring sports WILL have games/matches over our Spring Break.

TODAY:  Happy National FFA Week, everyone!  To our awesome ag kids, there is an FFA Chapter meeting
in Ms. Michel's room, O-1A, at 6:00 on February 19th.  We will be playing games and having root beer
floats, so you won't want to miss it!

Any student wishing to take AP Art Studio next year, must submit a portfolio of work to the Art
Department by today, Wednesday, February 19th.  See Ms. Diem in A-1 for any questions.

ACADEMICS/COLLEGE INFO:  UC Davis is hosting a Financial Aid Awareness Week this week  through
February 20 on the UC Davis campus. Financial aid professionals will be available to assist students and
parents complete the FAFSA and DREAM Act applications February 19-20 from 6-8 p.m at the UC Davis
Student Community Center.  Come to the Career Center for more information.

SENIORS:  March 2 is the deadline to apply for FAFSA and Cal Grants.  Don't miss out on getting free
money for college!  If you have any questions about either of these programs, come to the Career
Center this week!

CLUBS/EVENTS:  Join us this Friday in the North Gym from 9:00 to midnight for the Free Barnyard Bash!
What's better than a free dance with a free photo booth, free food and free boogies?  See you there!

CSF registration is this week!  Bring in your pink sheet, 1st semester report card and $5.00 to Ms.
O'Brien's room, P-13 during lunch to join CSF.  Sign up this week to avoid the later traffic!

If you want to travel this summer, Rustic Pathways, a teen travel and service learning organization, will
be in the Career Center on Friday at lunch to talk about their summer trips.  Rustic Pathways offers
programs in 19 countries, including community service, adventure, animal conservation, language
immersion, sports programs and more!  Come to the Career Center at lunch on Friday to learn more.

Do you know what you want to do after graduation?  Do you want to learn a new trade, start an exciting
career but don't know where to start?  If so, come to the Rotary career Day, Saturday, march 8 from
8:30 am - noon at Giedt Hall on the UC Davis campus.  Trade and business experts will teach students
about business etiquette, teamwork, resume writing, interviewing skills and using social media.  There
will be a skit performed by high school students, discussions about career choices and opportunities to
sign up for job shadowing.  Prizes and pizza provided to participants!  Come to the Career Center to sign
up or email Susanne Rockwell at sgrockwell at sbcglobal.net.

Hey, have you seen Mr. Hartrem, P-14's new motorcycle-riding student teacher.  He looks like the kind
of guy who would love to smooch a goat!  If you think that'd be a fun sight to see, go put some money in
his FFA Kiss the Goat jar!  For more information about this fundraiser and the FFA - the coolest club on
campus, visit O-1A.  Don't forget to watch the winning teacher smooch the goat Friday, the 21st at
lunch!

Ever wanted to display your art?  If so, the LEAD class is currently accepting art submissions for the DHS
Expressionfest!  All submissions must be in L-25 by February 27.  Be sure to pick up a form outside L-25.

What are the responsibilities of a High School Principal?  What about a School Board Representative?
Find out by picking up a Youth in Government application in C-4.  Applications are due Friday, February
28th in C-4.

Hello DHS Unicyclers!  Have a blast at the DHS Unicycling Club!  We meet every Thursday at lunch in N-4!

All DHS orchestra placement auditions will be held at Davis High School in the Music Bldg., Room PA-3
March 3rd - 7th.  Check your school music room for sign-up sheets for times and requirements.  SIGN-UP
DEADLINE IS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST.  Contact Mr. Moreno for any questions.  The final audition
schedule will be posted Monday, February 24th.

UC Davis is offering their annual COSMOS four-week summer program for high achieving math or
science students.  Students live on campus and attend classes in a STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math) related field.  Applications are due February 22.  Come to the Career Center for
information about the program, fees, financial assistance and how to apply.

Have you bought your yearbook yet?  Make sure to order your yearbook soon.  There are only a small
number left!  You can confirm your order by checking the list posted in the library's window.
