THIS DAY IN HISTORY:    1964 - In El Paso, TX, President Johnson and Mexican President Gustavo Diaz-Ordaz set off an explosion that diverted the Rio Grande River, reshaping the U.S.-Mexican border. This ended a century-old border dispute.

TODAY: Got a cool black and white portrait of your friend or pet that you want to show off?  Submit your masterpiece photo to the Digital Media Arts Club at dhsdmac at gmail.com<mailto:dhsdmac at gmail.com>. Only two submissions are allowed and judging for the photos is Tuesday, 12/13.  The winner gets $15. And runner up receives $5.

Holiday Grams are being sold this Tuesday through next Monday on the Quad at lunchtime.  Candy canes will be sold one for $1 or 3 for $2.  They will be delivered during 4th period on Monday of Finals Week.

ATTENTION SENIORS: Herff Jones will be holding a Parent Night to order senior rings and graduation announcement orders in the DHS Library, tonight December 13th, 5:30-7:30 pm.

ACADEMICS:  Hey sophomores! Link Crew will be hosting final study sessions on the 13th, 15th and 16th in L-23, Mr. Williams’ room.  Hours on the 13th and 16th will be from 2:30-4:30.   On the 15th, study hours will be from 12:10-5:00.  You can study by yourself or get tutored by Link Leaders.  Hope to see you there!

Finals are coming up and if you need help with your math and science finals, then you should come to MAST every day this week, except Thursdays in Mr. Van Muyden’s room, S9.  Also, if you would like to become a MAST tutor, applications will be open from 12/26 to 1/13/17.

SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Would you like to do research at UC Davis this summer?  The UC Davis Young Scholars Program offers a six-week summer research opportunity in biology and the natural sciences for high achieving high school students June 25 – August 5.  Students will stay in a UC dorm and conduct research, participate in lab work, go on field trips and earn 5 units of university credit.  Applications are due March 16th.  Come to the Career Center for information about the program, fees and financial assistance.

OPPORTUNITIES/EVENTS/MISCELLANEOUS:  Attention all DHS instrumental soloists announcing this year’s DHS Concerto Competition: The annual DHS Orchestra Concerto Competition will be held Wednesday, January 11th, 2017 at 7:00pm on stage in the DHS Brunelle Performance Hall. It is open to all DHS instrumentalist and free to the public to view. The winner of this competition will be given the honor of performing with the DHS Symphony Orchestra at the Mondavi Center in Jackson Hall at the Wennberg Music Festival on Saturday, April 8th, 2017 at 2:30pm as well as a check for $500.00. A sign-up sheet and informational flyer are now on the window of the computer lab in PA-3. Deadline to sign up is Friday December 23rd, 2016. CLUBS:  Black Student Union is running its winter holiday sock drive!  Please come by Mrs. Bruch’s room (P14) and drop off your donation in the sock box.  All socks will be donated to Davis homeless shelter.
Join the UNICEF Club!  Help make a difference around the world one student at a time by fighting for children in need.  Meetings are in Room L23 every other Monday at lunch.  Hope to see you there!

Interested in traveling this summer?  AMIGOS offers cultural immersion experiences through summer volunteer and gap program in Latin America that promotes global consciousness and leadership.  Come learn more about the program at the Spanish Club meeting this Thursday in S6 at lunchtime.
