<P><FONT size=3>Thank you Dan for printing my piece in the upcoming issue of your magazine! This is great. Getting the word out is helping. I have received numerous phone calls on my cell phone because of the action alert. The National Marine Fisheries Service in Arcata even held a special staff meeting because of my letter that you forwarded to them in your network. I spent a total of three hours on the telephone with Irma Lagomarsino, supervisor of the the Arcata NMFS office, Jim Milberry, NMFS biologist, and Jeff McCracken, BOR public affairs officer for the west coast. I also recently received an email from Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office in response to a previous Delta water issue and part of his response pretty well sums up the problem not just for the Klamath but for the entire State, "...California has reached a low point in water supply reliability, environmental health and sustainability. Together we can put in place the storage, conveyance, conservation, restoration and protection needed to sustain our environment and our economy..."</FONT></P>
<P><FONT size=3>Sadly, Dave Hillemeier from the Tribe and others studying the river here locally are voicing that they do expect a fish kill for the fall run, which is in line with the emails you already sent out regarding the same prediction. Unknown if it will be to the magnitude that 2002 was but a prediction for a salmon die-off at some level has been made by local biologists. In my opinion, the combination of the current biological opinion that mandates the dam releases stay where they are, the low warm water conditions in Upper Klamath Lake, the high ambient temperatures of this summer, and the fact that the BOR (Bureau of "Wrecklamation") has no inexpensive surplus water to buy and send down river as in years past, may mean disaster for the Klamath River ecosystem this fall. Long term, I learned in a confidential meeting I recently attended in Klamath, regarding dam removal negotiations with Warren Buffet's PacifiCorp, that even if the settlement agreement was signed today that the earliest the first dam could feasibly be removed is SEVEN years! We need an interim plan and we need the biological opinion that mandates the water release amounts to be re-written ASAP before the native salmon and steelhead populations are collapsed beyond restoration capabilities. We are knocking the heck out of the salmon while fishing spinners in the estuary, but upriver the large amount of moss and grass from the warm upriver water is making fishing difficult. We are headed for disaster again, though, if something isn’t done immediately!</FONT><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino><O:P></O:P></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 12px"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Palatino"><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino>The Bureau of Reclamation cut our flows again, which raised the water temperature even more. Unbelievably, the water temperature at midnight this morning hit 76.2 degrees F, according to the real-time data from the Klamath Sensor Station (KNK) a few miles upriver from the mouth. As of 11:30 AM the sensor temp has cooled a little but still 73.3 degrees F.</FONT><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino><O:P></O:P></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 12px"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; COLOR: black; FONT-FAMILY: Palatino"><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino>This may become another lethal event for these salmon just now entering the river. Some guides are reporting hooking 13 and landing 10 salmon in the estuary, so the salmon are coming in thick. We need help now! Hopefully, with anglers like yourself constantly monitoring the river and alerting the agencies and the public, we will prevent another big fish adult fish kill like the one of September 2002 from occurring again. Unfortunately, die-offs of juvenile salmon have occurred every spring and summer in the Klamath since 2002, due to parasite infection spurred by warm water conditions.</FONT></B><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino><O:P></O:P></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal style="TEXT-INDENT: 12px"><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 9pt; COLOR: #111111; FONT-FAMILY: Palatino"><B><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino color=#111111>The current warm water conditions, coupled with increased observation of disease, mortality, and average run size predictions, recently prompted the Klamath Fish Health Assessment Team (KFHAT) to increase its fish kill readiness alert level to “yellow.” The KFHAT is a collaboration of agencies, tribes, and restoration organizations that formed during the summer of 2003 with the purpose of providing early warning and a coordinated response plan to avoid, or at least address, a fish kill event such as occurred in the fall of 2002. </FONT></B><FONT class=Apple-style-span face=Palatino color=#111111><O:P></O:P></FONT></SPAN></P>
