Expense is a factor as is the number of homes we may be working with. -- We think exterior quality ceramic tile is the least likely to invite theft, to weather and is a medium in which several local artists now work. -- Eric Stromberg referred us to a ceramicist who is interested in the project. I've given her some details as possibilities and will talk with her soon. -- We will invite owners of structures which qualify for this distinction to participate and display these plaques. Who pays: -- We have $400 and invite matching money from the City. Who reviews prior to installation: -- Board and home owners ought to have input and final review privileges? -- If the City wants to work with us or create a channel whereby they review the plans then we welcome their ideas. Information being considered for inclusion on plaques: Date of Construction, nickname attached to home whether historic or because of heroic restoration efforts, hyphenations being a distinct possiblity, architectural contribution. We would like to see plaques on Merit Resource and selected homes in the neighborhood such as yours. The criteria for selection would include some if not all of these conditions: 1) age of 50 years and more 2) has an exceptional architectural and heritage value 3) exterior unaltered in most cases . If you are interested in displaying a plaque on your home, we hope you will also be part of the design and review process. The Board of the Neighborhood Assocation has set some initial parameters: Material: exterior quality ceramic tile Design: by a local artist partnering with you and the board Placement: front door or junction of sidewalk and front walk Information contained: Date of construction, the address, home's nickname (often the first occupant or a long time occupant) Intention: that each plaque be unique to the house We do not yet know how many plaques will be created. Our current budget is $400. If we secure City funds in addition we will be able to make more. Currently we have identified the following houses that would under the most generous scenario be eligible to display a plaque. They are by architectural type and address: 503 5th Street, a Victorian that predates the subdivision development in Old North 616 E Street, 633 E Street, 513 F Street, California Bungalows 621 6th, 602 D, Prairie Style Bungalows 507 E, 647 F, Front Gable Bungalows 650 E, 642 E, Simplified Bungalow 612 C, 519 C, Pedder Bungalows 639 E, Tudor Revival 601 D, [Spanish] Mediterranean Revival 528 D, Dutch Colonial Revival 636 B, English Cottage Revival 646 C, 520 C, 642 D, 626 B, Early Ranch 643 F, unique Arts and Crafts Bungalow 603 C, unique eclectic Tudor Colonial Revival If you would like your home to be one of those displaying a heritage plaque, please contact this member of the OND Board: Sheryl L.
