4. Minutes of March 15, 2005 Board Meeting approved by
consensus
5. a) CMC, b) cable franchise planning update
a) Richard Lowenberg reported on the library's public
hearing of last week. It appears that most of the attendees were in
favor of increasing the library facility space by adding to the current
building and/or constructing an additional building in Walnut Park.
A "Learning Center" was also seen as a potential benefit to the
community.
DCTV, KDRT, and DCN - as "Community Media Partners"
- will put forward a proposal for space in the new facility.
b) A public hearing for the cable franchise is scheduled for
May 16.
6. Celebrate Davis
Richard Lowenberg is coordinating DCN's participation. We
will promote the CMP (Community Media Partnership) There might
be live radio and perhaps a web cam. Where might the Wifi come
from? Should DCN have some 'give-aways' ?
7. Community Calendar Guidelines - update
Steve reported that the calendar is evolving and the main
(default) page congestion is being tackled. The solution decided
upon is for the default page to be a "Major Events" page. The "All
Events" page will still be available as a tab. There was general
agreement that the issue of commercial- for profit - usage of the
DCN Community Calendar would be problematic. There is no actual
proposal to open the community calendar to commercial entities.
Steve explained that area events of general interest to Davis
and surrounding communities are generally accepted for inclusion.
Requests from further afield as, for example, from Sacramento or
Vacaville are considered beyond the Calendar's service area.
Potential overwhelming the calendar is a primary reason.
8. Committee & Executive Director Reports
RAC - no report
Web Team - A Calendar Class was held last week
TechOps - The new server is being worked on - Jack
Crowell is absorbing the manuals and will install the Solaris OS.
Steve will build the application layer for Zope, Plone, PHP etc. The
name 'Velocipede' will move to the new server and all DCN's stuff
will be transferred from the old Velocipede.
Executive Director: - We'll do an outreach to the spiritual
and political groups in the community to explain about the Calendar
and invite applications from their organizations.
Richard is talking with Keith Prior about his proposed
"Neighborhood Knowledge" project to figure out if it is something
that DCN can put effort into. The Board agreed that a such projects
need a Board champion to usher them along. The other project with
a similar need is the Computer Refurbishing project that Bruce
Thomas talked to the Board about last month.
The financial situation is about normal. DCN has a slim
margin but is stable.
9. Keith was not in attendance for his Bon Voyage to Oregon
celebration but the Board wishes him well and reluctantly accepts his
resignation.
10. Announcements
Anne Hance reminded the Board that the time is due for
Board members to make their annual donations to the organization.
Checks made out to DCN should be sent to Richard Lowenberg at
the DCN Office.
11. Meeting adjourned at 6:19 pm.
