Board of Directors Meeting
May 17, 2011 5:15 p.m.
City Training Room, A Street, Davis
Attending (8): Bill Buchanan, Tsui Chang, Sheila Evans, Jim Frame, Teri Greenfield, Russ Hobby, , Jan Meizel, Kimball Sargeant
Absent (4): Anne Hance, Steve McMahon, Robert Nickerson, Richard Yamagata
1. The meeting was called to order at 5:20 p.m.
2. The agenda was approved with the addition of an item about officer email addresses.
3. There was no public comment.
4. The minutes of the April 19 meeting were reviewed and approved by consensus.
5. Celebrate Davis. Sheila described the logistics of this year's appearance by DCN at the city's Celebrate Davis event. Sheila and Jim will set up, Jim will tear down, various board members will take turns staffing the table.
6. Spring classes. Tsui noted that classes have been well-attended, though the no-show problem, though minor, is still with us. She mentioned that access to a bathroom and a to larger venue when needed would be appreciated, and that the fall class lineup will include a class on online collaboration.
7. City Media Grant. Teri stated that the server specifications have been finalized, and that Steve will make the purchase when he returns from his Plone meetings. Teri has identified a suitable video camera at Costco, with a price in the high $200 range.
8. Email addresses. Teri informed the board that email accounts have been established for each of the officer positions (president@dcn.org, vicepresident@dcn.org, treasurer@dcn.org, and secretary@dcn.org), for class administration [AMEND FROM: (classes@dcn.org)] [AMEND TO (class@dcn.org), for Twitter (twitter@dcn.org)], and for archiving official DCN communications (archives@dcn.org). A standard signature file has been developed by the OPC; it includes the title, a link to DCN, and a brief description of the organization.
9. Tsui thanked Jan for installing [AMEND FROM: Adobe Premier] [AMEND TO: Adobe Photoshop and MS Office] on the new Macbook Pro.
10. Committee reports:
RAC: Jan noted that there were no resource requests in the past month. The committee is editing the DCN resource guidebook, with Anne taking the lead role.
OPC: Teri stated that the committee has been working on Celebrate Davis, and is discussing ground rules for the DCN Twitter account. Tweets will not be automatically posted to Facebook. Teri told the board that the DCN video is in progress; the segment with Stu is done, and that 2 interviews will be sufficient. The status of the DCN website update was raised, but no one present could provide a definitive answer.
Tsui mentioned press releases. Sheila stated that one for DCN's Celebrate Davis presence has already been released, and one for the Computerworld award will be released in early June.
11. Tsui revisited the Twitter discussion, [AMEND FROM: stating that she would like board members to have posting access to the account.] [AMEND TO: suggesting the new Twitter account be announced to all board members so that those already have a Twitter account can start "following" it if they so wish.] It was agreed that multiple people will need to provide content in order to generate enough traffic to make the postings useful. Teri will set up a Google Docs document for group development of DCN Twitter guidelines.
12. The meeting was adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
