Davis Community Network Board of Directors Meeting

August 16, 2011

5:15 p.m.   City Training Lab, A Street, Davis


Board Members present (9): Bill Buchanan, Tsui Chang, Sheila Evans, Jim Frame, Anne Hance, Teri Greenfield, Steve McMahon, Jan Meizel, Kimball Sargeant

Board Members absent (3): Russ Hobby, Robert Nickerson, Richard Yamagata


1. The meeting was called to order at 5:20

2. Agenda was approved as distributed

3. No public comment

4. The minutes of the 7/19/11 board meeting were approved by consensus


5. Fall Classes Report - Tsui Chang

            Tsui reported that the fall schedule of free classes for the community is developing well. The list is on Google Docs for all Board members to review. Once again a couple of new ones have been added.


6. Internet History Project - Bill Buchanan

            Bill reported that he and Teri had met with Jim Becket and with Jeff Shaw to talk about the project, assess active interest and collect thoughts and ideas. There is a Google Docs document to which DCN Board members should add any information they have on potential resources for the project - human and other. Two preliminary interviews are planned. Jan Meizel will be interviewed about Davis High School's involvement in the early days when the Internet was beginning to be opened up to other entities than the initial Universities. Russ Hobby will be interviewed to talk about his role in the way in which the Internet unfurled in those early days.


7. Guidebook - Anne Hance

            Anne, Jan Meizel and Tsui Chang asked for the board's general approval of a modest restructuring of the area of the DCN website where the Nonprofit Internet Tool Kit and RAC pages need to be updated and the material for the new Guidebook aka DCN Resource Users' Guidebook or Help Center needs to be inserted. Restructuring will be done with the knowledge and advice of the Web Team Chair. No negative issues were raised.


8.  Committee Reports

            OPC: Teri Greenfield noted that a DCN News will go out this week and it will include the list of classes as well as an announcement of the new DCN video, created by Teri and others, on the homepage.

            Web Team: Steve McMahon reported that the new sever is up and running and he is busy setting up the software and transferring data. Steve showed his laptop screen where the DCN homepage proudly sported the new video with the words; Can you spare five minutes to save your organization thousands of dollars?

            RAC: Jan Meizel reported that 4 local nonprofits presented their requests at the last RAC meeting (August 15, 2011). The three main resources (SimpleSite, Mailman and Calendar) were approved for each one. The revised, consolidated set of DCN policies document was given to each applicant.


9. Announcements

            Tsui Chang and Steve McMahon reported that the Davis School District would like DCN's help in the creation of a three-minute video designed to explain/clarify a few of the less well understood aspects of the District's finances. The video will be available to the public in conjunction with the "District Dollars" informational website. The board was happy to be able to help.


10. The meeting adjourned at 6:10 pm

The next Board meeting will be September 20, 2011.
