Minutes for August 19, 2014

Financial update, classes, board turnover

Members: Bill Buchanan, Sheila Evans, Jim Frame, Teri Greenfield, Anne Hance, Russ Hobby, Jan Meizel, Steve McMahon, Robert Nickerson (9 active members; quorum = 5)

Bill called us to order at 5:30pm

Present: Bill, Anne, Rob, Teri, Steve, Sheila
Absent: Russ, Jim, Jan

Approve minutes from July

Steve did not get these out in advance, so we should take this up in September.

City MOU negotiations update, Jim

Jim was absent, so no negotiations update. We have invoiced the COD for the usual amount, which we understood was acceptable in the absence of a new MOU.

Financial update, Sheila and Jim

Payment from the county has been received. UCD payment for IP block has been received. We are current on bills with 19,000 in the bank.

Omsoft is now being payed directly by the city for bandwidth. They are also covering all but $100 per month of electricity.

We are roughly balanced on subscriber fees and server admin expenses.

Bill suggested that this puts us in balance roughly through the end of the year.

Rob related that his high-speed link from old to new buildings is now working, raising the hope that use of the network room, and electric consumption should be lower.

Classes this fall, Bill

Cable Cutting (Steve)

Small for Connections Cafe or bigger

E-Mail -- private vs free (Rob)

Internet of Things (Rob, possibly at maker space)

Cyber Security (Bill)

Election web resources (Jenna from Elections, Steve can help organize)

VBM status, registration checks, polling places

Searching the Internet (Anne)

DCN Web Tools drop in (Steve, possibly maker space)

Or particular tool classes

IPads & tablets (Jan)

Sheila will begin organizing the schedule.

Board turnover, Bill

We can reasonably expect some turnover at the end of this year. Russ is likely to leave; Bill may.

Bill suggested we begin getting new names now so that we can have informal meetings with candidates during the fall. The human network will probably be the best way to reach out.

We could have a news item on e-mail availability and mention the board openings.

Committee reports

Anne reported that there have been no new RAC applications in the last month.

Web team: Steve reported that the Elections’ Office’s new web site will be online very soon.

NEXT BOARD MEETING: Sept. 16, 2014
