In this issue:

  1. New board members
  2. Learning Skype, and other classes to come
  3. A good example

1. Meet Mike and Bill
We're pleased to welcome two new members to the DCN board: Mike Adams and Bill Wagman. At its October meeting, the existing board elected each to two-year terms. Their election expands the board’s size by two. Both have technological skills.

Mike has worked in the information technology field for over 30 years, most recently with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021, a labor union representing public employees throughout Northern California. He also received a master’s degree in Public Policy from the UC Berkeley Goldman school. Retired from full-time employment with SEIU in 2010, he now divides his time between several pursuits, among them volunteer work and playing bass for Odd Man Out, an all-Davis rock cover band.

Bill just retired from UC Davis, where he was a programmer and database administrator. He has lived in Davis most of his life, and co-hosts the long-running The Saturday Morning Folk Show radio show on KDVS. He also stages concerts in his living room.

We anticipate that two more new members will join our board late this year or early in 2015, setting the stage for discussions in 2015 about possible new ventures or projects involving DCN. More to come!

2. Classes confirmed and in the works
Confirmed: A class on using Skype, to be taught Dec. 1 by DCN board member/retired teacher Jan Meizel. In the works: The Internet of things, and handing off digital assets during changings of the guard at nonprofits

Jan will teach her class at the Connections Café, sponsored by the city and the Senior Center. Connections Café is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend, from 6-8 p.m. Mondays in the Valente Room of the Davis Senior Center, 646 A St.

Details for the other two classes are being worked out. DCN Vice President Rob Nickerson will teach them.

3. A good example
Bob Fung has created a new local website to improve the quality of information available to voters during election seasons, such as the one we’re about to wrap up. Here’s how he describes it:

"As many of you know, I'm working on Voterprep (www.voterprep.org). It helps voters 'prepare' for voting by providing a non-partisan platform in which candidates can directly communicate with voters.

"Voterprep is supporting its second election, the Davis Board of Education election [Nov. 4]. If you have a chance, go to Voterprep and check it out. Any feedback would be appreciated."

He also has a Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/voterprep.
